Back to home

December 15, 2001

Our ambassador of goodwill, Jackie Frizzell Pauley, hosted our December luncheon. Jackie’s home was decorated inside and out. She had the most beautiful Christmas tree that had 1850 light on it. (Jackie tells us they counted how many strings they put on to determine this amount.)

Those attending were Judy Bowen Romano, Sally Lewis Henson, Joanne Berkley Scarbro, Phyllis Rumbaugh Fenwick, Jane Bennett Ferrell, Jackie Frizzell Pauley, Joan Bennett Belcher, Dreama Martin Vass and her husband Roger, Jim & Katherine Garber, Raymond Barnett, Windell Withrow, Don Evans, Bill Dunlap and Delbert Kidd. (Note of Interest: Don arrived on his motorcycle and after taking off his helmet he put on a Santa Claus hat and made his grand entrance. This brought much laughter from all of us!)  (Picture below)

We had ham, potato salad, sweet potato balls, corn pudding, deviled eggs, vegetable tray, crescent rolls, relish tray, chips and dip. For desserts we had home made candies and cookies, apple pie, pumpkin pie and a lemon dessert.

We ate until we were stuffed then talked and laughed for four hours.

Jackie made us a tree ornament with our name and date painted on them. This is something each of us will cherish and remember each Christmas with fond memories of our December 2001 Luncheon.

We all signed the Christmas cards that we send to our classmates that are sick or in the hospital and also send a card to Harry Webb’s widow and to Gary Pelfrey's Mother. Then we gathered in the living room for group pictures.   (See picture below.)

Thanks again Jackie for sharing your beautiful home and all the work you did on the lovely ornaments you made .

Happy Holiday Season to our entire Class.

Thanks so much for the cards, loved the one that just arrived with
the HS logo on the envelope.

Surgery went well but as what is becoming usual, not what was to be
expected. The patella tendon had not healed so he intertwined an
achlees tendon with it, cut a window in the tibia and attached a
wire in a figure 8 around my knee then secured it in
the hole in the tibia. Then replaced the upper half of the knee
prosthesis with a new one that comes further down and holds the
bottom half much like a box over it. This will prevent sideways
motion for the ligament that cannot be repaired. I am now in a full
length brace (my 6th) with the knee locked at a 45 degree angle and
am totally non weight bearing for the next 8 weeks. They will not
let me use crutches for fear of a fall so I hop on my right foot,
the one with the shattered heel and ankle, with a walker. It is a
sight. Right now the only hopping I do is to the bathroom. I truly
thought the purple pedicure would have done the trick this time so
maybe I just need to change pedicure colors.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and thanks so much for the
cards and prayers. Love,
Mary Ann

I received the following emails from Mike Hardman on 9/9/01 and
9/10/2001. I thought you'd enjoy hearing what he's been up to.
Mike has ok'd my sharing his story with all of you. I can just hear
him talking when he relays his story. Still a good humored guy.

Congratulations to you Mike for having such wonderful daughters.

I'm happy to report that we have corrected the names under the
pictures. Don Evans, Phyllis Fenwick, Joan and I tried to identify
the people and it was difficult after all these years. Considering
our age, memory and sight - we thought we had done a pretty good
job. ha ha

Jackie

THE MIKE HARDMAN STORY

Dear Jackie:

Hello. This is Mike Hardman. The web site you and Joan have created
is very nice, but in the 35 yr reunion picture you have my picture
listed as Bob Hardwick. While Bob was a fine fellow, I prefer to
have my name with my picture. I am between Leo and Larry R. Jackson.

I feel that as long as I am writing you I must brag about my 2
daughters (who unlike their father WILL amount to something).

My oldest, Jennifer, graduated from the Air Force Academy and then
Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn. She is now an ER doctor and
a captain in the U S Air Force. She is married to an air force
pilot and just had my first grandchild...Sara.

My youngest, Michelle, is in her final year of law school at UC
Berkeley in Calif.

After 4 marriages and putting 2 girls through college, I expect to
retire somewhere around 2025.

My wife for the moment is Janet.

Well, it has been nice chatting with you and I hope to see you in
2003........Mike

By the way, I also noticed on the 35 yr. reunion page a picture of a
guy holding a "Bud", but it is not me - even though my name is under
it. He is far too good looking to be me, so have fun guessing who it
is. I still think that you and Joan are doing a fine job with the
web site even if you don't know who anybody is.......Just kidding.
lol...Mike

November 26, 2001

November 17 was lunch day and joining together were the following:
Phyllis Rumbaugh Fenwick, Jane Bennett Ferrell, Joan Bennett
Belcher, Jo Anne Scarbro, Bull Miller, Jim and Katherine Garber (Pocahontas County, WV), Jack and Carol Pauley (AL) and me.

We had a wonderful time. It was such a beautiful day. We shared
lots of stories. We had 2 teachers (Carol and Katherine) and
Phyllis as school secretary.....boy, did we laugh a lot. They had
the funniest stories to tell. Jo Anne chimed in with a great story
about her nephew that had us all rollin' in the floor. What a hoot.

Jack has decided that he has beat Jay Nelson's previous record of
coming the furtherest from WA. He says Jay had an alternate reason
to come to WV - to see his children. Jack says he has come 2 times
JUST to have dinner and lunch with his classmates and that should
count for more. Oh no....a battle between classmates. ha ha

Of course, Garber came down early so he could see all of us and then
be in a great mood to hit the woods and start hunting.

Sure wish all of you could be with us for these luncheons. We have
great fun together!!!

Try to make arrangements to be in WV and join us for the December
lunch at my house. Now that will be December 15th at 11am - the 3rd
Saturday of the month.

Details will come later. Love to all -
Jackie

Yesterday Jane Bennett Ferrell, RM Brewer and myself went to visit with
Bob  "Rat" and Martha (Bailes) Rogers.

It was a very nice visit as there were 5 of us and it was easier to keep
a conversation going.

Martha was in good spirits and enjoyed the visit with all of us.

I must say it was one of the better visits that I've had with Bob. He
was very alert (Martha said she had the nurses give his medicine to him at a
different time of the day now.)

He talked somewhat, laughed and enjoyed looking at the pictures RM had
brought with him. The pictures where of Dick Campbell, Dick Meeks, Jim
Stuck and RM - they had all gotten together a few weeks ago.

There was lots of reminiscing and we ended up staying about 45 minutes.
(Usually our visits are only 10 minutes or so.)

He loves the cards he receives so keep them coming.

Love to all -
Jax

WOW!!! TALK ABOUT A GREAT STORY. DAVID MORRIS TOOK
A TRIP TO PERU  AND HE AGREED TO WRITE A SHORT STORY.

DAVID, I CAN'T BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW MUCH I ENJOYED
YOUR STORY AS I'M SURE OTHERS WILL TOO.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING WITH US. ESPECIALLY THE
ONES OF US WHO PROBABLY WON'T EVER MAKE THIS TRIP.

JACKIE

DAVID MORRIS' TRIP TO PERU

I took a wonderful trip to Peru in June and visited Machu Picchu,
probably the most beautiful spot I've seen in the world (outside of
the WV hills, of course). I've attached a photo for your enjoyment.

It was, indeed, the trip of my life, but more because it was a
spiritual conference as well as playing tourist. I just thought the
beauty of Machu Picchu was unsurpassable and that you would enjoy
the picture.

I had read several books by a guy named Dan Millman, an Olympic
gymnast of the past. The first book was "Way of the Peaceful
Warrior"... a best seller and translated into about 20 languages
around the world. Anyway, at one point in my travels, I met him at a
lecture he was giving and later was informed by email that this trip
was occurring and that he was to be the principal speaker. I
decided to go and the rest is history.

The group of 87 people were from all around the world and ranged in
ages from 18-77 years old. We all had a spiritual connection of
sorts, as most had read his book(s) and were attending because of
that. It turned into a magical two weeks and we now have a web site
and are planning a reunion in 2003. A short synopsis, but gives you
a clue as to how I ended up in Peru, big earthquake and all.

I was there during the earthquake, which was a grand trembler at 8.1
on the Richter scale. I was hundreds of miles from the epicenter,
but it still shook the buildings quite a bit. I was in Cusco (12,000
ft elevation) at that time for the Inti Raymi Festival (Festival of
the Return of the Sun) which goes on for three days.

THIS IS AN UPDATE ON MARY ANN BLAIR TANTILLO'S SURGERIES. I THINK
SHE HAS A GREAT DEAL OF COURAGE, BUT SHE COULD CERTAINLY USE OUR
SUPPORT RIGHT NOW. BE SURE TO ENCOURAGE HER WITH CARDS AND YOUR
PRAYERS. (for those of you just reading about Mary Ann you can go
to "Old News" to find out about her accident which started this
whole journey for her):

MARY ANN WRITES ON:

October 13 - Thanks so very much for your e mails and prayers. I
just got home from my third hospital stay today and Frank set up his
lap top for me. Monday, the first, I HAD the surgery and it was
quite successful. Friday, the 5th, I was transferred to a rehab
hospital and was doing well until Tuesday at which time my knee
became very unstable and they did not want to do any more therapy.
My doctor said to go on home and he would see me Thursday morning at
the scheduled appointment. I came home Tuesday late afternoon and
Wednesday evening my knee just gave out, buckled under me and as I
went down to the floor it literally popped open much like a ripe
watermelon. The prosthesis was out and I severed the patella tendon
so had emergency surgery Wednesday night. Came home this afternoon
and I am to keep my knee in a stabilizer brace and no weight on that
leg which is quite hard because the right ankle is very weak from
the shattered calcareous. So a set back, but I intend to come
through it with flying colors. Thanks for the prayers and keep them
up. If you send an e-mail out, please thank everyone for the cards
and mail. It will be very hard for me to get to the computer for
the next few weeks, but when I do, I love the mail..

Love , Mary Ann

October 17 - Jackie, Hi - it is quite ok to tell folks of the knee
giving out and the fall. I go to the doctor the 23rd, so will know
more about the recovery of the severed tendon. I have physical
therapy three days a week in the house along with a nurse and home
health aide. Yesterday she gave me a shower and washed my hair. I
feel like a new woman!!

Folks are so very good to me that there is no time to get down or
depressed, as you must know, you do what you gotta do and find the
humor in it. I do think my doctor must have a well funded
retirement fund thanks to me!

I have answered all e-mails, but think some did not go through. I
have trouble typing on Franks lap top. I answered Joan Bennett, but
don't think she got it so when you see her thank her for the card,
it was really cute.

Appreciate all the thoughts and prayers, I sure need them and am
convinced that is what helps in the recovery.

Love, Mary Ann

October 23 -Loved the Throckmorton song, it is great but a little
too true.

Went to the doctor this am and the patella tendon is healing nicely,
but the ligament on the other side of the knee is not holding the
knee in place so will have surgery #6 on November 16 to put a peg in
the knee for stabilization. Will loose some range of motion with
this one, but will be able to be a super Wal Mart shopper afterwards
so that is good. Must keep the knee immobilized until the surgery
so the patella tendon is fully healed. Keep me in your prayers, I
appreciate it.

Love , Mary Ann

MARY BETH DORSEY ELMORE GIVEN AWARD

Now all of you know we have a lot of "smart cookies" from our class,
so I like to keep you posted when I hear of our classmates'
achievements.

Mary Beth retired from the public schools this year, but continues
to teach on a part-time basis in the Communication Department at
Marshall University.

She was selected the "Cabell County Teacher of the Year" this past
year making it a wonderful way to end her career.

She is teaching two classes at the University so she's still
involved in education.

Way to go Miss Mary Beth, we are all so very proud of you.

WE ALL NEED A LITTLE HUMOR ABOUT NOW SO HERE'S SOME FROM BOB
THROCKMORTON:
___________________________________________________
Subject: FAVORITE THINGS
My brother sent a new set of lyrics to "My Favorite
Things" from the Sound Of Music. Throcky

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillac's and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinning,
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinning,
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache, when the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.

October 20, 2001

Once again we joined for lunch at Applebee's and had a great time.
It's a lot of fun to see those we haven't seen for a while and, of
course, our regulars.

For those of you who haven't made it to a lunch, you simply must try
to do this. We want to see you!!!

Those who were there this month were: Joan Bennett Belcher, Sally
Lewis Henson, Jay Nelson, Bull Miller, Raymond Barnett, JoAnne
Berkley Scarbro, Drema Martin Vass & husband, Roger, Jackie
Frizzell Pauley
and a surprise visit from Ellen Kitts Westmoreland
who was only able to stop by and say hello. Hopefully, the next
time Ellen can join us.

We are sorry to inform Jack Pauley from Alabama that his title of
"traveling the furthest" has now been taken over by Jay Nelson who
came all the way from the State of Washington.

Now Jack, maybe you can get a new title for "traveling great
distances the most times." Are you ready for another lunch or
supper with us???? Come on up to WV.

Keep us in mind for the next lunch in November.

Love to all - Jake

Hi there.........I liked your comments on the horrors of yesterday.
I wonder if the same feeling we all felt yesterday were the same
feeling our parents felt on December 7, l941? There is so much
sorrow today and all of our hearts go out to the victims and their
families. One of the strangest feeling I have had through out all
this is that eventually everything will be ok. I have no doubts
that America will stay strong and withstand this horrible thing that
has happened to all of us. Becky Padon

I couldn't say it any better. We are so close here , Somerset, NJ,
that several of our people saw the second plane hit the tower. We
have been in shock since yesterday. One young lady who works for me
has not heard from her husband who works in the towers, but she was
getting beeps from his cell phone. It will take more than this to
bring the country down. I think those responsible will regret the
action down the line.

Take care .

Hi there..........Our neighborhood had a candle light vigil last
night. It made one feel very strange.. There we were, about a 100
of us, standing in a circle with the only light being our candles.
I am sorry to admit that I don't know a great many of my neighbors.
This is a very transient area, but I felt that I was surrounded by
friends. Not much was said except for individuals asking us to pray
for their friends, coworkers, family members who were victims of
this tragedy. We sang the usual songs.......America, Amazing Grace,
etc.......just a few of them. I have never in my life felt so
unbelievably sad, but at the same time so proud of this wonderful
country that I live. As you said it would be a long time before
things will return to normal or normal as it can be. We are all
changed and our world as we know it will never be the same. All we
can do is hand in and do our best to help.
I really think everyone in America feels the same way, has the same
fears and worries and all we can do is lean on each other for
comfort and strength. Hang in there kiddo this too shall pass.
Love, Becky (Atwood Peyton)

I know everyone is getting a lot of email on this subject, but the
following is a very important view on the repercussions of what
happened
Tuesday that I wanted to pass on. You may agree with it, you may
not.
The important thing is to consider every perspective.

If you hate inter-office spam, I apologize. I thought this was
important enough to risk annoying a couple people though.

I've been hearing a lot of talk about "bombing Afghanistan back to
the Stone Age." Ron Owens, on KGO Talk Radio today, allowed that this
would mean killing innocent people, people who had nothing to do with this
atrocity, but "we're at war, we have to accept collateral damage.
What else can we do?" Minutes later I heard some TV pundit discussing
whether we "have the belly to do what must be done." And I thought
about the issues being raised especially hard because I am from
Afghanistan, and even though I've lived here for 35 years I've never
lost track of what's going on there. So I want to tell anyone who will
listen how it all looks from where I'm standing.
I speak as one who deeply hates the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. My
hatred comes from first hand experience. There is no doubt in my mind
that these people were responsible for the atrocity in New York. I agree
that something must be done about those monsters.
But the Taliban and Ben Laden are not Afghanistan. They're not even the
government of Afghanistan. The Taliban are a cult of ignorant
psychotics who took over Afghanistan in 1997. Bin Laden is a political
criminal with a plan. When you think Taliban, think Nazis. When you
think Bin Laden, think Hitler. And when you think "the people of
Afghanistan" think "the Jews in the concentration camps."
It's not only that the Afghan people had nothing to do with this
atrocity. They were the first victims of the perpetrators. They would
exult if someone would come in there, take out the Taliban and clear out
the rats nest of international thugs holed up in their country.
Some say, why don't the Afghans rise up and overthrow the Taliban? The
answer is, they're starved, exhausted, hurt, incapacitated, suffering.
A few years ago, the United Nations estimated that there are 500,000
disabled orphans in Afghanistan--a country with no economy, no food.
There are millions of widows. And the Taliban has been burying these
widows alive in mass graves. The soil is littered with land mines, the
farms were all destroyed by the Soviets. These are a few of the
reasons why the Afghan people have not overthrown the Taliban.
We come now to the question of "bombing Afghanistan back to the Stone
Age". Trouble is, that's been done. The Soviets took care of it
already. Make the Afghans suffer? They're already suffering. Level
their houses? Done. Turn their schools into piles of rubble? Done.
Eradicate their hospitals? Done. Destroy their infrastructure? Cut them off from
medicine and health care? Too late. Someone already did all that.
New bombs would only stir the rubble of earlier bombs. Would they at
least get the Taliban? Not likely. In today's Afghanistan, only the
Taliban eat, only they have the means to move around. They'd slip away
and hide.
Maybe the bombs would get some of those disabled orphans, they don't
move too fast, they don't even have wheelchairs. But flying over
Kabul and dropping bombs would not really be a strike against the criminals
who did this horrific thing. Actually it would only be making common
cause with the Taliban--by raping once again the people they've been
raping all this time.
So what else is there? What can be done, then? Let me now speak with
true fear and trembling. The only way to get Bin Laden is to go in there
with ground troops. When people speak of "having the belly to do what
needs to be done" they're thinking in terms of having the belly to kill
as many as needed. Having the belly to overcome any moral qualms
about killing innocent people. Let's pull our heads out of the sand. What's
actually on the table is Americans dying. And not just because some
Americans would die fighting their way through Afghanistan to Bin Laden's hideout.
It's much bigger than that folks.
Because to get any troops to Afghanistan, we'd have to go through
Pakistan. Would they let us? Not likely. The conquest of Pakistan
would have to be first. Will other Muslim nations just stand by? You see
where I'm going. We're flirting with a world war between Islam and the
West.
And guess what: that's Bin Laden's program. That's exactly what he
wants. That's why he did this. Read his speeches and statements.
It's all right there. He really believes Islam would beat the west. It
might seem ridiculous, but he figures if he can polarize the world
into Islam and the West, he's got a billion soldiers. If the west wreaks a
holocaust in those lands, that's a billion people with nothing left
to lose, that's even better from Bin Laden's point of view. He's
probably wrong, in the end the West would win, whatever that would mean, but
the war would last for years and millions would die, not just theirs
but ours. Who has the belly for that?
Unfortunately, Bin Laden does. Anyone else?

In Peace,

Tamim Ansary

AN OPEN LETTER TO TERRORISTS
by jwillis@bellatlantic.net
(Jim Willis & Nicole Valentin-Willis/Tiergarten Sanctuary Trust)

I don't know your name, or names - we may never know who you are -
so I can't address you personally. Today, you killed several thousands
of our friends...perhaps not people who we knew personally, but people
like us.

People who worked hard to make a living, who loved someone, who
were loved by someone, who worried about making a better life for their
children and grandchildren, who believed in God and the American
Dream, who criticized this country for its insufficiencies and cared
enough to try and change things and ensure a better future, not just for us,
but for the world. People who leave behind scores of loved ones,
friends, pets, neighbors, coworkers, and members of their faiths. Perhaps
even people who derived from your own country and who sought refuge
here.
Your act was a slaughter of the innocents.

You are like an insidious cancer that strikes without warning,
ravages bodies, tears families apart, and in the end can never destroy the
soul.

You are the ultimate coward.

You may topple our buildings, collapse our communication systems,
disrupt our government, crash our markets, and leave behind the
carnage of bodies, but you will never destroy the soul of America. We made
this country from the bits and pieces of the rest of the world; we took
the best, the worst of every culture and nationality, race and creed,
and made an alloy that may be dented, but not even a trial by fire can
melt.

I don't know what god you believe in, or what hateful rhetoric you
espouse, or what your misguided political beliefs might be that
allows you to do what you did today without a fear of eternal damnation. I
only know that you may win a battle or two, but you will never win this war.
We have the entire history of the world on our side, and no dictator,
despot, or madman has survived as long as America has thrived and
prospered. If you accomplished anything at all today, it was to give
America a wake-up call, and we will now rise up stronger than before.
You are defeated before you've even begun, there in your private hell
and later in your eternal one. Someday your people may even need our
help, and because we are America, we would respond.

May God bless the friends we lost, their families, friends, neighbors
and coworkers. We will help them rebuild from the ashes. May God
continue to bless America, help her to protect us all, and may she
continue to shine as a beacon of democracy and hope to the rest of
the world.

Going on with our lives is, I think, is what it is all about and
helps me to cope. I struggle to find a way to respond to all this
and make a contribution. Our convention center was open for a blood
drive and David and I went down Wednesday night around 5pm but at
that point there was a 5 hour wait and they recommended making an
appointment at the Red Cross Center this week which we shall do.
Say "Hi" to all for me. Family and friends take on even greater
importance at these times. I also realize how I know nothing about
the Muslims in my own community and don't want their lives to be
like those of the Japanese during WW II. Signed up at my church to
volunteer to stand watch at Muslim services as one of our members is
trying to organize that. A bit of good news - just took pictures
off from my cousin's son and his wife that are of their new daughter
born 9/12 at 5:26 pm who weighs 8lbs 40z and is darling. What a
great way to go on with life!! Love, Gypsy

Hello to all:

We had our lunch on Saturday, like usual, with the same amount of enthusiasm and laughter, but I'm sure everyone had the US crisis in the back of their minds.  There was some discussion about it.

We were blessed with two classmates and their spouses who had not met with us before for lunch.

Besides the "off and on" regulars: Butch Buckley, Bill Coles, JoAnne Berkley, Joe Bennett, Joan and me; we were joined by Harry Ramsey and his wife, Kathy, and Drema Martin Vass and husband, Roger, and their daughter, Dinah.

So all together there were 11 of us and we had another great day of storytelling, reminiscing, sharing and laughter.  Butch was up to his regular shenanigans.  He kept us in stitches as usual.

We hope more of you can join us next month on October 20th.

Love to all -  Jackie

September 11, 2001

Today September 11, 2001, will never be forgotten!  As someone said this morning on TV, this day will be remembered by us and our children just as Pearl Harbor is remembered.

What sadness we must all feel today.  It is unbelievable that we could have such a terrible thing happen in the US.  To be attack on American soil.  Probably something most of us would never suspect would happen.

I do hope that you and your families are all safe.

My prayers go out to all of those who have suffered such great losses and are grieving at this time.

Take care and know that I am thinking of each of you.

Love to all and God Bless America!           Jackie

FROM JACKIE:  Back in January 2000, Mary Ann Blair Tantillo had a terrible accident.  She relates her story to us in hopes that maybe we will all read it and be very cautious so none of us make the same mistake.  Keep her in your prayers and remember when it comes time to send cards.

STORY BY MARY ANN BLAIR TANTILLO

September 10, 2002

Received June 23, 2001

Hi Jackie:

"I am still recovering from a fall thru the attic onto the garage floor  that happened on January 2, 2000.  Evidentially when I saw the box I wanted, I just walked to it.  I walked between the rafters and went straight through to the garage floor.  Shattered or broke every bone in my left leg and shattered the right heel and ankle.  I have one more surgery to go, a knee replacement,  and then I should be walking OK."

After I recovered from the knee replacement, I will have to have more work done on my heel and ankle.  I'll have either fusion or ankle replacement.  So, I'll probably have two more surgeries.  I go to the  doctor this Wednesday and I would like to wait for the knee replacement until January and hopefully he will agree.

        Letter received August 29, 2001

Hi Jake,

I went to the doctor today and will have my knee replaced on October first.  He said he may not have to replace the knee cap and would make that decision during surgery.  I told him he need not wake me during surgery that I have given him permission to make that decision.  He assured me that he was pleased I would allow him to do so.  I also told him that folks treated me as though I was old, fat and crippled.  He said I was not young for which he has a long way to go to recover from that statement.  My new knee will be made of zirconium which is the newest innovation in joint replacement in over 20 years and the knee will never need to be replaced.  It will last so long that I can even name it as an asset in my estate!  If I need my ankle fused that will be done in January and I will be non weight bearing on the right leg for 3 months which also means no driving since it is the right leg.  He is hoping that after the knee is done that periodic cortisone injections will get the heel.  The cause of the pain is the heel, not the ankle, but they fuse the ankle and I am not a candidate for ankle replacement since the source of trouble is the heel.  We will begin to cross that bridge as I recuperate from the October surgery.  He did say I would be able to go to NC for Thanksgiving.  Our house will not be ready for another 3 weeks, so I guess we will get furniture in and wait to unpack sometime in the spring.  Have a good day.     MARY ANN

Added note:

David & Gypsy Barker Lyle went by to visit Mary Ann while they were on the East Coast in July.  She said that Mary Ann sure had a lot of courage and that she certainly had a lot of spunk to have endured all that she has throughout this accident.

"A WONDERFUL STORY FROM BOB THROCKMORTON"

August 23, 2001

A year ago, I went to Elkins to visit some very dear friends who own a Bed & Breakfast there.  While sitting on the porch drinking wine and meeting guests, I wanted to make sure that I helped to contribute the popularity of the home and to assure the guests that their return would be more rewarding each time.  In any event, a gentleman and his wife really intrigued me, and we "hit it off" with wonderful conversation, dinner, and drinks on the porch in the evening.  My wife simply loved this wonderful lady with him, and so each of us spent time in conversations of our own.

After an entire weekend talking about music interests, travel, childhood in West Virginia, College, family, etc. the gentleman simply said that my introduction was of no consequence, as he knew me.  As I struggled to get my mind in gear as to what he meant, he simply said that he had know me for a few days more than I realized.

In making a long story short, the gentleman was Mike Woodford, class of 1959, and his wife Tina.  He finally lost his composure and simply couldn't stand it.  What a great confession!

Lucy and I returned to the B&B this weekend for the 100th Anniversary of the home as did Mike and Tina.  Other attendees were regular guests from years past, local Elkins people and owners of other Bed & Breakfast from the area.

Mike and I have talked at great length about our SCHS friends from many of the classes.  Evidently, there are not many creative people out there that have taken the time and the initiative as you two have done to develop a page, or to simply create a vehicle to keep things current among their graduates.  You both are simply wonderful in your desire to keep us all in touch, and I am very appreciative of your work.

Yes, at our age, there will be more bad news than good on occasion.  You are right to ask our friends to report about some pleasant things as well.  It's not that hard.  As for me, I remarried one year ago and have basically started a whole new life.  My wife is Lucy, and she is from St. Albans.  We just celebrated our first wedding anniversary in April.  I am probably going to return to West Virginia in the near future, something I thought I would never do.  That is not of any great interest to anyone, but it is a more positive thought than my being returned for burial.  For you, such information is not really important to you personally, but it is an item that you can put in the newsletter.  For someone else, it may be great gossip for all I know.  And there you have your front page story.

Thank you ever so much for your work and kindness on our behalf.

With Fond Memories,  "THROCKY"

Note from JACKIE:

WOW!!!   What a enjoyable story.  It will be nice to have Bob back in the area soon.  Maybe he will try to get together with us at one of our lunch meetings.

Joan and I appreciate his kind compliments to us.

I asked Bob to tell us more about the B&B and I also wanted to find out what he has been doing.  (sounds like he's had a really full life that continues to offer good things to him!)  He was generous enough to write to me again with the following:

The B&B is called Warfield House, and it is beside Davis & Elkins College.  Across the street is the Elkins City Park.  I taught with the owner for a long time before they returned to Elkins and bought the place.  The home is simply beautiful.  It is listed and registered by the Department of The Interior of Historical Places.  Location interests include very close proximity to the Cass Scenic Railway, Canaan Valley Resort, Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory and other neat things.  They have a website.  An overnight stay and riding the railway is a great trip, not to mention wine and music on the porch and restaurants within walking distance.

I am currently doing some private music instruction, occasional substituting as well as doing painting and restoration work with a friend.  I am planning on moving to Elkins next year, as it is a beautiful, quiet place as well as being much closer to Lucy's family in St. Albans.  Regarding your concern for bad news in your site newsletter, I am returning to WV for just that reason.  My best friend died two weeks ago (53) and our other mutual friends have all died over the past four years, all in their early 50's. I have no reason to stay here anymore.  Sure is scary, isn't it.

Hey Guys:

I went to the unveiling of the mural in SC the other day.  (see related story with picture elsewhere on our web site, dated August 9th.)  It was nice...saw a lot of people we know.

I walked up to Don Evans and told him, "your perspective drawing is much better than Bill Goebels."  (They had used Mr. Goebel's drawings from which to paint the pictures.)  Believe me, Don's drawings of part of the old buildings in South Charleston that he did for our class were much, much better.

The owner/manager of McDonald's on Jefferson Road, was talking with Don.  He said he was just saying the same thing about  Don's drawings and he has all of Don's drawings displayed at his McDonalds.  (Don was nice enough to mention that I helped him get started with the drawings.  I encouraged him because I just knew he could do a wonderful and realistic job.  I'm sure all of you who received them at past reunions will agree.)

Now the City of South Charleston plans to have other murals painted on walls of other buildings in SC and Spring Hill.  I said I'd like to know where to place my vote for a few of them to be Don's drawings.

I will let you know if there is somewhere we can send in our votes in the future.

This story is taken from a newspaper article in Clarksburg, WV and is about Judy Bowen Romano's son Robert.

Out-Of-State Travelers Find Area Doctor Quite Skilled And Accommodating

It's always gratifying for a community to be recognized and appreciated by out-of-state residents when they have something really nice to say about the area.  Clarksburg was the subject of such words of praise last month from Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Kenoe of Aiken, S.C.

Mr. Kenoe, I'm rather certain, will remember Clarksburg, W. Va., for some time to come, as he had a "noteworthy" experience while in the city.  He opened his letter to me by saying, "The purpose of this letter is to thank the community of Clarksburg, WV."

He continued, "My wife and I were off on vacation from Aiken, S.C., to Toronto, Canada.  On Tuesday evening - (apparently July 17) - I developed pain and soreness on my right side.  The next morning, we 'pulled off' at Clarksburg, WV, seeking medical relief.

"While feeling my way, I was 'lighted over' by a traffic policeman.  Quickly explaining my need, he directed me to urgent care: 'Third right beside McDonald's.'  I left him with a 'get well quickly.'

At urgent care he stated that he met Dr. Romano, a confident and patient listener.

"He ordered blood counts from his office, confirming excessive white counts.  He quickly added, 'Could be appendicitis."

"We decided to have further tests at United Hospital Center, this time more definitive.  "Impacted appendicitis."  Dr. Romano suggested two general surgeons and selected Dr. Victor Villarreal.  I checked into UHC on Wednesday (and had) surgery that evening, and the next morning (was) on the way to recovery."

Mr. Kenoe added in his letter,  "Dr Villarreal and Dr. Romano are skilled physicians and a real contribution to the medical community - one the community should cherish."

He mentioned that he and his wife were alone in Clarksburg, "but we were so blessed to meet Bill and Drema Snyder from Clarksburg.  Bill was my roommate.  Sometimes, you are so directed by the Lord it confounds you.  We spoke of the love of Jesus Christ.  "Do not be afraid, Come, follow me, for I love you."

The South Carolinian further told me, "Bill and Drema were so uplifting, so full of care during the three-day period.  (But) I do not want to miss my point.  They were more than lifesavers, crutches, etc.  They are true lovers of mankind, cemented in the beliefs of strong community, honesty, solid citizens and most important, lovers of Clarksburg.

"They reminded of pure and simple expression of care, reaching out to lead and help.  What extraordinary representatives of Clarksburg and our beloved country.  I cannot leave this chapter of my life without thanking Bill and Drema, United Hospital Center and Drs. Romano and  Villarreal."

Then he made a very important point.  We attend parades, which swell our community and country pride.  We attend our churches, which swell our devotion to the Lord.  But we seldom pause to salute a community, Clarksburg, WV, which came together to welcome strangers.

"My heartfelt thanks to Clarksburg its citizens and its way of love and life."

Mr. Kenoe left his address, and I take this liberty to include it: J. A. Kenoe , 276 Forest Pines Road, Aiken, SC 29803.

Judy, what a great job you did  raising Robert and all your kids.  I know you are PROUD!!!!

August 23, 2001

Good Morning to All........

Hope you had a great weekend.

Part of our "great weekend" was getting together on Saturday for the lunch group.  We had a good time talking, laughing and eating, of course.

Those who were able to make it: Joan Bennett Belcher, Jane Bennett Ferrell, Judy Bowen Romano, Bonnie Brenneman Turner, Bill Coles, Raymond Barnett, Butch Buckley , Bull Miller and me.

Judy Romano tells us that a fellow who was traveling got sick and had to have surgery in WV.  Her son, Robert, was one of the doctors involved.

Now there !!!!! That's a bit of good news. ha ha

A couple of people have said that '"all" we are telling is the bad news.  (For those of you who are troubled about this - go back and read the old news.)  I believe we've tried to report both kinds of news.  OUR GOAL IS TO KEEP  YOU UP TO DATE!

Yes, it is sad that we have lost many from our class, but we thought you'd like to know - particularly if you live out of town and have no way of keeping up on the latest.

I might add that we get a lot of positive notes from classmates who are happy to be up to date on the latest.

Let me know if you can think of anyway we can improve what we report.  Remember, we have no special training - just trying to report  things about which we have knowledge.

Joan and I set up this web site because WE thought it would be a great idea and a way to keep in contact with our classmates.  Joan and I work sometimes endless hours to keep stories straight and hope not to offend anyone.  We've asked nothing of our classmates or our class committee except their addresses and to keep us up to date with any news you receive so we can share.

I still wish some of you would come forth with some "fresh" stories for us.  Thanks to those who have done so as of this date.

Love to all, Jake

Nick Wiepper of Reaford Sign Co. in Charleston applies paint to a mural at the corner of Fifth Avenue and "D" Street in South Charleston.  The 16-by-21 foot  mural is based on a pen-and-ink drawing of South Charleston in the 1960s by Doug Goebel.

Bob Anderson , director of the South Charleston convention and Visitors Bureau, "It's stirred so much interest that people are interested in sponsoring a second mural" The red, yellow, green and gray picture depicts the downtown Mound district as it looked in the early 1960s, kind of an aerial view taken from above the Kanawha River with the Mound in the foreground and shops and homes behind.

Well the results are in.  Guess who won the Quilt?

None other than our MR. GARY PELFREY.

Fortunately for "Pelf" - he was coming to WV to close on his Mother's home which had just sold.  He stopped by and picked up the Quilt on Wednesday.

My temptation was to put another older quilt in the bag and keep the one that Martha had made.....it truly was beautiful!!!  Do you think Gary would have noticed???? ha ha

Our classmates donated $131.00 to the Parkinson Foundation in Bob Roger's name.

The rehabilitation Hospital where Bob lives only sold around $34.00 worth of tickets.  Martha took the quilt back from them and just did the drawing with our classmates who had bought chances.  She thought the hospital had not held up their end of the bargain to help sell chances and she knew that the money collected wouldn't cover the expenses of the materials.

Martha wishes to thank all who helped with this special event that she put together for Bob.  Martha says she is also so very proud of her classmates which are as usual "High Flying Eagles"!!! and she says she knew we  would not disappoint them (she and Bob).

Thanks to all who participated.  Love ya  JAKE

Lucky me!   I got to visit with Gypsy Barker Lyle on Monday the 23rd and received a message from Mary Ann Blair Tantillo on Friday the 27th.  Unfortunately, the two of them had just missed our luncheon on the 21st.

Gypsy came through South Charleston to visit an Aunt.  She and David invited me to join them for breakfast on Monday morning before they left town.  It was lots of fun just to talk and visit with them.  They both looked great.  They were going on to KY to visit with David's family.  We spend about and hour and a half together catching up on the latest news.  David left us after the first hour.  He's such a sweetheart to put up with us.

They had also stopped in NC to visit with Gypsy's cousin and also with Mary Ann before coming to South Charleston.  I certainly enjoyed this unexpected visit.

Then on Friday, I came home to find that Mary  Ann had left a message on my answering machine.  She was also in visiting family.  I phoned back and left her a message but, unfortunately, we never were able to connect by phone.  She had said on her message that she was leaving right after church on Sunday.  She also said she would look forward to seeing all of us at the next reunion.

I will be send out a story soon about the accident that Mary Ann had January 2000.  She has one more surgery to go.  Gypsy talked about what guts Mary Ann had for all that she had gone through and she had such a great positive outlook.

More to follow........JACKIE

7/29/01

Well, I must say I spent a wonderful Saturday on the 21st entertaining our classmates.  Those who were able to attend were: JANE BENNETT FERRELL, JOAN BENNETT BELCHER, JUDY BOWEN ROMANO, WANDA CLAY COLBERT, DELORES COBB ANDERSON, BONNIE BRENNEMAN TURNER, JOANNE BERKLEY SCARBRO, BULL MILLER, BUTCH BUCKLEY, DELBERT KIDD AND ME, of course.

We had such a beautiful day; the flowers were blooming and the sun shining. Everyone brought wonderful dishes of food (*) and we ate, talked, laughed and enjoyed the time together.

After everyone else had left, Butch and Bull stayed and we rocked in the rockers out front and talked some more.

Love his heart....Bull got out the sweeper and ran it for me....He knows that's one of the things I can't do.

The girls had cleaned up everything in the kitchen before they left so after everyone was gone - you couldn't tell I'd had company.  Thanks, gals & guys!!!

Love to all and plan to try to make the next luncheon.  JACKIE

Hey Gang:

Thought you might like to hear a little something about a few of the teachers we had in "dear ole SCHS." Has anyone else seen or talked with any of our teachers?  If you have please share with us.  If you just have a special remembrance of one of our teachers - write a story.

7/28/01

I saw MRS. ALICE LONG at a funeral not too long ago.  I spoke with her briefly and told her we had a web site and that I would tell all of you that I had seen her.

Believe me, this woman has not aged...Oh!  To look so great.  (For you guys that don't remember Mrs. Long - she was the girl's gym teacher.)

Jackie

7/28/01

From time to time we see MS. HAZEL CHILDRESS who still lives in the South Charleston area.

Ms. Childress retired from SCHS a few years ago and remains very active.  It's my understanding that she goes to SCHS every day to volunteer.  She also does substitute teaching.  When we are having our lunch gatherings, I don't think there has been a time that some of the men (as well as the women) haven't mentioned having her as a teacher and how much she helped them.  They credit her with their schooling and sometimes their jobs.  (See related story written by Gary Pelfrey.)

This is another of those teacher who looks the same as she did in 1958....how do they do it?????

    Jim:

I told you earlier that I would give you a short run down of my career when the Legislative session ended.  So here goes and thanks for asking.

My stay at South Charleston was a special one.  I was reared in central West Virginia in Gilmer County and graduated from a small high school called Tanner, Class of thirteen.  I graduated from Glenville State College in 1952 with both a AB and BS Degree in Mathematics and Physics.  My first teaching (learning) experience was at Man High School in Logan County.  Class size ranged from 45 to 55 and there were six of them.  After two years in the military, I returned to Man High School for one more year before coming to SCHS in 1956.  My tenure at South Charleston High was eight years (six as a teacher and two as vice-principal). Following a brief tour as a Principal at Dunbar and St. Albans, I joined the central office staff for Kanawha County Schools in 1969.  I remained at Central office doing various assignments as a assistant superintendent.  I retired from Kanawha County Schools in 1984 and worked for five years as an assistant manager of the Kanawha County School Employees Federal Credit Union.  In 1986 I began a six year term as a school board member for Kanawha County Schools.  Since 1993 my duties have been serving as the Executive Director of the West Virginia Association of School Administrators and plan to continue in this capacity.

I am married to Willadean Clarkson now retired from Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation.  No Children.  We reside at 111 Greenberry Drive, Elkview, WV 25071.

Best wishes to the SCHS CLASS of '58!

                                       Sincerely,

                                        Fred Radabaugh

A "SPECIAL THANK YOU" TO JIM FOR GETTING THIS INFORMATION FOR US AND TO MR. RADABAUGH FOR BEING SO GRACIOUS IN RESPONDING.

                                                                    JACKIE

MRS. THELMA CONLEY lives in Spencer, WV.

It's my understanding that she was given a presentation this year at the South Charleston Armed Forces Day Parade for her dedication to the City of South Charleston and South Charleston High School.

I'm not completely sure of the details, but will try to find out more about this event.

The following is a story written by Gary Pelfrey.  Thanks Gary for a neat story about the wonderful teachers at SCHS.         JACKIE

    THE TRIG TEST

When I went off to college, I soon learned to appreciate having teachers like Hazel Childress and Louise Stewart.  My roommate at WVU went to Nitro High School.  No dumb bell was he.  He eventually earned a degree in math.  We soon found out that he placed in both bonehead English and math.  I ended up in neither. That was when I realized how important it was to have quality high school teachers.

At the end of my first semester, like many, I headed for my high school.  The first teacher I visited was Ms. Childress.  She was giving a final exam in trigonometry.  I told her that the last final exam I had taken at WVU was a trig exam.  So she went back in the room and brought me her trig final.  I looked it over and mentally compared it to the one I had taken at WVU.  I thought, sure am glad I didn't have to take this final.  I must have done OK on the one in Morgantown because I received a B in the course.  I'm not sure I could have gotten better that a C on Hazel's test.

Thanks Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Childress.

BONNIE BRENNEMAN TURNER TEACHING IN CHINA

For those of you who don't remember, Bonnie Brenneman Turner got married and left school in our 10th grade.  She finished school and went on to college.

Bonnie tells me that Judy Bowen's Mom (remember Audrey and Bowen's Beach??) took she and Judy to get their GED's.  Good for Audrey.

Bonnie went to State after her youngest child started school and got a Masters at WVCOGS and had lots of hours at Marshall & WVU.  She taught one year in Putnam County and 29 years in Kanawha and now she's on her way to teach in China.

Now that's what I call "pulling it all together", although she quit school to get married.  We're proud of your accomplishments, Bonnie, and I'm sure your husband was too.  Keep up the good work and let China know what we West Virginia's are made of.

Bonnie has a wonderful opportunity to teach Oral English in China at Nanyang Institute of Science and Technology in the frontier city of Nanyang in Henan Providence (PRC).  She will receive Faculty Housing - a two bedroom furnished apartment.  She will be there for 5 months beginning the end of August.  Will you ever have a better reason to visit China ?????

Bonnie, says she welcomes visitors.  She request that we please email first, so all of us won't arrive at the same time.  Ha! Ha! Seriously, she loves company and really means it when she says she would welcome visitors.  So put on your travelin' shoes and think about visiting her.

Good Luck and Have a Great Time !!!

    Her email address is:  csblt@yahoo.com

If anyone goes to visit Bonnie - send us an email or postcard.

    Love to all, Jackie

    Hey Guys:

We had another great lunch on Saturday and enjoyed it being at Judy Bowen Romano's home.  It was certainly nice of Judy to invite us to her home and it was much cozier than a restaurant.  We had soooo much food and it all tasted yummy!

Joining us were:  Jo Anne Berkley Scarbro, Jane Bennett Ferrell, Joan Bennett Belcher, Bonnie Brenneman Turner, Delbert Kidd, Judy and myself.  Seems each time we do lunch - we have the distinct pleasure of seeing another classmate or two.  Lots of fun and just like having "mini" reunions.  (This was Delbert and Bonnie's first lunch with us.)

Now as you explore the above list, I'm sure  you have noticed that the only "rose" among all the thorns was Delbert.  :-})  I don't think Delbert minded being the only fellow with all the girls - we had a great time and caught up on a lot of news.

Bonnie Brenneman got married and left school in our 10th grade.  Obviously, she finished school and went on to college as she will be teaching in China this year.  (Note:  See related story below.)

Oh, yes, another highlight of our lunch was Gary Pelfrey called  and talked with all of us since he couldn't join us in person.  Way to go Pelf, we enjoyed hearing from you!

Buckley called me today to see how our lunch went as he was out of town.  I told him it was wonderful except we didn't have any comedy entertainment without him.

Be thinking about our July lunch and try to join us.

    Love to all,  JAKE

    "MY FIRST GRADE SWEETHEART"

I have had the opportunity to talk with so many friends.  Among them I must say, one of the most enjoyable has been my renewed friendship with JIM STUCK (FL).  The reunion committee had not been able to find him for past reunions.

Jimmy and I were in the first grade together at Central Grade School.  I remember when we went to school for the first day of first grade, we were told by Miss Jack that another boy who was sick would join our class later.

Later that week, Miss Jack had arranged for Jimmy's Mom to have him watching for us as we took a small field trip and walked past his home.  There he was sitting at his window, we all waved to him and he returned his wave to us.  How excited we all were to see/meet him.

Now, what I must share with all of you is - I fell in love with this young boy right then and there.  He was, thereafter and always, my first grade sweetheart.  Do you think I've embarrassed our cute little Jimmy yet?

I have permission to continue calling him Jimmy - at one time he was "Jimmy Don" and I was "Jackie Sue".    :-})

Wonder if he felt the same way about me way back then???

Does anyone else remember being in this first grade class or any other class for that matter?  Come on - anyone have a story for me - I went first ???

NOW HERE'S A GOOD STORY ABOUT HOW SOME OF OUR CLASSMATES HAVE GOTTEN IN TOUCH AGAIN !!  (WRITTEN BY JIM STUCK - APRIL 18TH.  SORRY I'M A LITTLE LATE GETTING THIS ONE POSTED):

I )Jackie) had asked Jim how he found RM and Dick and this is what he wrote:

As far as RM and Dick goes, the story (thanks to the magic of cut and paste) was something like this.... I was looking up someone's phone number on the internet the middle of last year when on an impulse, I linked to one of the "Find Old High School Buddies" sites and registered.  They had some dumb question about what do you remember from the high school days, so, being the perpetual smartass, I said "Buying beer at Mom's, signed off, and promptly forgot about it.

Lo and behold, I got a note from Barb Pritt saying "I remember that" and reminding me that only the guys bought from Mom's; the girls went uptown to the Ice House and let Lynn Bailey do the buying because she was the bravest.

I connected with Barb and found out she had complied this amazing  list of old farts from SCHS.  She added me to the list and I started getting e-mail from people who had somehow gotten much older than I.  One of those people was Dick Meeks.  Dick also gave my e-mail address to RM Brewer, who contacted me and let me know that he now lived in Daytona Beach most of the time, but we got together in Lewisburg last summer when both of us were passing that way.  Daytona Beach is only ninety minutes south of Atlantic Beach, and I go that way once or twice a month when I'm working in South Florida, so I've stopped off to see RM several times since.

Dick and Mary Meeks came down this spring, and Bev and I went down to visit with them and RM.  We went back later in the year for the Daytona 500.  One race was all it took, Bev has become a committed NASCAR fan, so we're going back in July for the Pepsi 400.  Dick and Mary are coming  back with Dick and Trina Campbell to visit RM early in May, so providing RM's hospitality continues to hold up, I'll also get to see Dick Campbell for the first time in multiple decades.

ALL THIS THANKS TO THE MAGIC OF THE INTERNET.  I don't know how exciting all of this is, or who would be interested in reading it, but that's the story to date.

Heard from Gary Pelfrey a few days ago and gave him my proxy to lift one or more glasses on my behalf when he joins you guys this weekend.

Give my best to all and thanks for keeping me in your thoughts.

    Love, Jim

'WHAT OUR WEB SITE HAS DONE FOR US'

So many people have contacted me.  Not only our classmates, but others from South Charleston and even those from other schools.  Thought I'd share a couple of their e-mails with you.

Several months ago, I spoke with a fellow, Chet Thornton, via e-mail from St. Albans who put me in touch with others that he knew from our class.

Received 2/11/01:

Enjoyed your web page.  Everyone seems so young.  I've forwarded it to a few SCHS friends and bookmarked it for future looks.  I'm in almost daily contact with Jackie Pauley, SCHS 58...his address is - since you most likely don't have it.  (Note: REMEMBER THIS IS THE OTHER JACKIE PAULEY - I WAS JACKIE FRIZZELL)

My wife is Janet Henson SCHS 60.  She grew up on Montrose Drive and ran around with Carolyn Waybright.

Keep up the good work.  I hope that you identify the people in the pictures for the rest  of us.  I recognized a few faces.  (Note:  Most of this task was carried out by Joan, Phyllis, Don and me. )

MESSAGE FROM THE OTHER JACKIE PAULEY DATED 2/13/2001:

Billy Dunlap is my cousin, whom I haven't seen for 40 years.  After seeing his address on the SCHS 1958 page I called him, he's planning a visit in 2 weeks and is bringing another cousin that I haven't  seen in 45 years.

Martha Rogers was telling me that Bob's birthday is this Saturday and she would appreciate it if we sent cards.

I went to visit Bob yesterday.  He looks great.

Special Note):  For those who saw Bob at Schultie's at the last reunion, what a change!  Martha has cut his hair and beard.  Under all that long gray hair his hair is brown and he has a mustache.  He looks like our Bob.  He seemed very alert and could answer any questions, etc.  He talks very low because of the Parkinson's Disease.

Bob told me that he really appreciated and enjoyed hearing from everyone.  He has our cards on his wall.  He loves visits.  I would suggest if you can go - to try and go right after lunch.  Martha said SOMETIMES after his medicine and nap in the afternoon that he gets somewhat confused.

I also think Martha could use a card.  She seems to be going through that withdrawal after you've been the chief caretaker.

Martha:    RR4, Box 398-A, Hurricane, WV 25526-9369

Bob:            Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation , Room 158,  300 Saville Road, Hurricane, WV 25520

DON'T FORGET ABOUT JIM AND BETTY JO MILLER:

51 Tannery Road, Dillsburg, PA 17019

And:    Michelle Webb (Harry's Widow)

Route 7, Box 185, South Charleston, WV 25309

Love to all and Hope all of you out there are feeling wonderful !!! Jacks

"SPECIAL NOTE":

How about the rest of you ?  Any stories about yourselves, children or grandchildren that I could publish ?  We love hearing what everyone's up to and I know others do too.  I've had lots of comments about the previous stories - so keep'em coming.

Jackie

Hey Guys:

Now this was one you shouldn't have missed.  We had such a good time !  Those who were able to attend:  Jane Bennett Ferrell, Joan Bennett Belcher, Jo Anne Berkley Scarbro, Sally Lewis Henson, Judy Bowen Romano, Phyllis Rumbaugh Fenwick, Butch Buckley, Raymond Barnett, Wendell Withrow, Jackie Pauley (male) and Jackie Pauley (female-me).

THIS DESERVES SPECIAL ATTENTION:  WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT JACK PAULEY DROVE UP FROM ALABAMA JUST FOR SUPPER WITH US AND THEN DROVE HOME THE NEXT DAY????

Now that's what I call "anxious to see us".  He stayed with his sister who lives in SA.  Once we "found" Jack - he and I have been corresponding and he said since he hadn't been able to make a reunion in the past - he just figured he'd like to join us for supper.  He wanted to be sure that he was able to join us for something just in case he wasn't able to make our regular reunion or the next grand reunion.  We certainly enjoyed his company and hope he joins us again.  By the way, Jack is a retired school teacher.

Now, that should be some incentive for the rest of you.  Come on - some of you who live out west...couldn't you just drive in for the night next time??? ha ha

This was  first time  Jo Anne  joined us for a monthly gathering. We really enjoyed talking with her and hope she will join us each month for lunch.  Jo Anne lives in South Charleston.

Wendell and Jack had both visited with Bob Rogers earlier in the day at separate times.  Both reported that he was doing well under the circumstances.

Speaking of Bob, I'm pleased to report that our class had slightly over $100.00 in tickets purchased for chances on the quilt.  (This is the quilt that I wrote about previously).  There may be others from our class who have sent directly to the Rehabilitation Home where Bob lives.  It would be nice if one of our classmates won.  I do hope some of you will try to get together with us for lunch on the 3rd Saturday of this month (16th).  We will have another supper soon and I will let you know the date and details before hand.

Love to all, Jake

PS Anyone have any "news" we could share ?????

May 18, 2001

Hey Guys:

This was our lowest turnout, but all of our usual group are forgiven.  They had very good reasons to miss the lunch.

We also have had very dreary weather - rain, rain, rain.  I mean the kind that's making lots of flooding around here.  Only us ducks came out for this one.  We only had four of us to show up Saturday: Bull, Wendell Withrow, Sally Lewis Henson and me.  We still had a great time visiting.

This was Sally's first lunch - she plans to come again.

Wendell enjoys us so much that he arranged to join us again this  month and he also plans to make a supper we are planning.  You will get information about this supper soon.

I'm sure that Ivan Arbogast and his brother didn't get to fly over in their airplanes for the SC Armed Forces Day Parade as it was so foggy and rainy.  Gee, and I had planned to run outside and wave to them.  :-))

Love to all - Jake

When you are out in your car, be very considerate of all motorcyclists.  They are sometimes hard to see. ESPECIALLY CONSIDER THIS....one of those motorcyclists might be a classmate.

I think you will enjoy the stories below.  JACKIE

GYPSY BARKER (AR) and husband Dave are out there riding motorcycles and having a blast.  Can't you close your eyes and just vision Gypsy with the wind blowing in her hair?

Below is a story Gypsy wrote for me:

Jackie,

David rides and I ride behind him.

A good laugh on me was the time he gave me a motorcycle weekend course for my birthday.  To make a long story short, on the last day I ran into the instructor and they sent me home.  They were very nice and said I would be welcome back at any time, but I've chosen not to take them up on it.

Our longest trip was my first and that was 3700 miles round trip when we went to Sturgis, South Dakota to the Harley Davidson Rally.  Since then we have gone to Durango, Colorado to an International BMW rally and several times to Peoria, Colorado to the Top of the Rockies BMW Rally.

David has done several other trips with his sons and friends, some of which have been repeats of these.  We plan to go to Paeonia again this year.

It is a great way to travel and you see a lot.  In the summer in Arizona it is not so great with the heat getting over 100 degrees so we limit that as much as possible on a trip.  The thing I don't like is a lot of wind when we are on an interstate and, in fact, I prefer not to do interstates if possible.

Love, Gypsy

Last Year DON and LYNN EVANS started on an excursion to see six lighthouses down the Eastern Coast of the United States.

They left their home in South Charleston and rode to Virginia Beach seeing two of the Lighthouses located at Virginia Beach.  From there they went down the Outer Banks making stops at four more Lighthouses.

Especially of interest was the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse which had been moved the year before because the beach erosion was taking place and the water was coming closer.  They caught a ferry boat at the lower end of the Outer Banks for a 2 1/2 hour ride to the mainland in North Carolina and then went on to their home in Myrtle Beach.  At this point they had approximately 1,200 miles on their cycle.

The main reason Don and Lynn took the trip was to attend the Myrtle Beach Motorcycle Rally.  By the time they had ridden around on vacation and rode back to South Charleston they had traveled well over 2,000 miles.  By the way, Don looks perfectly suited and content to be on his "Hog."  His son, Scott has a Harley also and they ride quite often together.

Note from Jackie:  Now I'm truly impressed that people from "our age group" can withstand such trips.  Good for all of you - Gypsy, David, Don and Lynn !

LYN BAILEY GUMOWSKI:

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Charleston, Kanawha County Public Library will have another exhibit put together by LYN BAILEY GUMOWSKI. ( She is asking that we please don't print her name so large and in red anymore, since this makes her nervous).  This is her latest voluntary career - her third project for them.  Called "CADA DIA EN MEXICO," this one is devoted to the careful artistic attention paid to humble objects.  There are to be seven or so categories - the one called PARA NINOS - has a lot of her son's toys, textbooks, and games.  Then she tore up her kitchen for LA COCINA."  She dug around and found items for FE y ESPERANZA, HISTORIA, MUSICA and figured out how to do LAS FLORES without rotting nasturtium,. dahlia, zinnia, marigold, poinsettia, tigridia, cosmos (all "born in Mexico") inside the case.  If you're in town, try to go see it at main library, up for the month of May.  Husband Danny says to hold off a year on Ukrainia, por favor.

    Hey Classmates:

Well, I must say this was a great luncheon.  We were joined by several classmates who normally can't make these get togethers.

The following people were there:  JANE BENNETT FERRELL, JOAN BENNETT BELCHER, PHYLLIS RUMBAUGH FENWICK, JACKIE FRIZZELL PAULEY, BULL MILLER, BUTCH BUCKLEY, RAYMOND BARNETT, WENDELL WITHROW, AND GARY & RUTH ANN PELFREY.

We had a wonderful time.  Of course, Buckley was in his "entertainment mode" and kept us laughing the whole time we were together.  This fellow should have been on TV as a comedian.

Wendell shared some of his stories about his many travels.  This classmate is "on the move".  We will see if he will share some of his travel stories with us later when he gets back home.

Pelfrey had found some interesting pictures while he and Ruth Ann were going through things at his Mother's home.  (Since moving his Mom to VA - He and Ruth Ann are getting the house ready to sell.)  I hope to share the pictures with you once I get the story written and get permission from all involved.

Phyllis and John had just returned from a cruise.  Johnny has taken up deep sea diving. Ummmm, I feel another story coming on. :-})

Hope some of you can plan on our May luncheon which will be held on the 3rd Saturday of May.  I'll send out a reminder when it gets closer.

There are lots of new stories on the "latest news" section of our web page - Don't forget to visit our site.

    Love to all - JACKS

Hey Guys:

Even since I started contacting people for e-mail addresses, I've talked with so many of you.  I've found out some very interesting things about you and I will be doing articles from time to time.   I want to make it clear that I will verify from you that it's ok to publish a story before I do it.  I wouldn't want to get on anyone's bad side.  I hope you will enjoy this part of our website.

"IT DOES CONTINUE TO BE A SMALL WORLD"

One of my grandson's plays on a basketball team which is coached by my son-in-law, Keith Hutcheson.  There is a fellow whose son plays on the same team and he always videos the games each week and gives the video's to my son-in-law so he can review the games.  My daughter, Scarlett, was telling me about this and said the fellow's name was Shane Higgins and that he too had gone to SCHS.  One look at Shane and I knew he had to be OWEN HIGGINS' son...he looks a great deal like him.

Bottom line - our grandsons play on the same school basketball team and we didn't even know it.  Now Owen and I see each other at some of the games.

Makes you wonder about the children we are watching play sports, cheer or other.  Could they be some of our classmate's grandchildren?

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS????"

Several years ago, my sister, DOTTY FRIZZELL DEARDORFF ('48)  and my brother-in-law, DON DEARDORFF('49)  called and told me on my next trip down to their home in Florida that we would have to go to this great place they had found...Mount Dora.  They went on to describe how it was like a little village with shops in it and nice places to eat and that they loved this particular little shop called "Country Cottage Crafts."

A little later when I was e-mailing BARBARA WEBB PRITT, she was telling me that she owned a little shop in a placed called Mt. Dora.  Can you believe it?  It was the same shop.  Needless to say, the next time I visited Dotty and Don we made a  trip to Mt. Dora.

Several others from our class have stopped by to see Barbara and Wayne.  I remember in particularly that LAURA JO COUNTS CARTE and husband, BOB , went to visit.

Guess who is NOT retired anymore?

We now have over 80 local Crafters exhibiting and selling their work.  Loretta and Larry Jackson have sold their work in our store, and Patty Shropshire Morris (class of 1957) was also one of our crafters.  JACKIE FRIZZELL PAULEY came calling one day.  LAURA JO COUNTS CARTE AND BOB CARTE have been to our store twice.  Wayne has had many classmates from his 1957 SJHS visit.  I think they like to watch him work as a Shipping and Receiving Clerk.

Note from Jackie:

Hey gang.  If any of you are visiting in the Florida area, you should make a side trip to visit Barbara and Wayne.  The shop is really neat and the town of Mt. Dora is quaint and a fun place to visit.

"INTERESTING FACT ABOUT SCHS"

Paula Romano Potter, daughter of JUDY BOWEN ROMANO, is the Vice Principal at good old South Charleston High School.

I've had a few of the fellows tell me they hoped she didn't have access to their school records from 1958.  ha ha!!!!

"VERY SMART YOUNG MEN"

DON AND LYNN EVANS'  youngest son, Sean, will be graduating from Marshall University soon and has been accepted at WVU to do his Master in Physic.  Such a smart young man.  Way to go, Sean!!!

BUTCH BUCKLEY'S son, Scott, will be graduating from South Charleston High School this year.  He is busy making a decision where he will go to college.  Scott is a very smart fellow and has received many awards throughout his high school days.  He is Student Council President and has played several sports.  Butch has spent a great deal of time traveling around the U.S. watching Scott, who is the Team Captain, play ice hockey.  Good luck to you Scott

Note from Jackie:

Now I want all of you to take note that while a lot of us are enjoying our "grandchildren," Don and Butch have "sons" graduating from high school and college.

"KEEPING IN TOUCH"

GARY PELFREY has always stopped to visit with me or called each time he has been to St. Albans to check on his Mom.

Around Christmas time he and wife, Ruth Ann, found that it was necessary to move her to VA to live where she will be closer to them.  I will certainly miss his visits and calls, but I know this will be easier for him and his family.

Thanks to e-mail my ole buddy  and I can still keep in touch.

Do all of you remember "The adventures with Jim and Judy" in the first grade?

Well, now we have an even better story to read "THE ADVENTURES WITH DAVID AND JUDY COOK."   I read the journal again today that Judy kept on their trip which started on October 2, 1998 to Kanchenjunga.  Believe me, it keeps you wondering if they made it to the end of their destination.

Go to their website and read all about it.  The journal is three pages long complete with pictures and such details that you feel you are on the journey with them.

http://www.fortunecity.com/millennium/family/290

I will have to check and see if they have made other trips and kept a journal.  Meanwhile, if any of you have something interesting for Joan and me to post on the website, please let me know.

Your story doesn't have to be as daring as the Cook's trip.  We just want to know what all you guys are doing with your lives.

NOTE TO DAVID AND JUDY:

I truly say, "WOW! Judy, after reading all about the trip again."  I certainly admire you and David (I must say particularly YOU).  I can't imagine going through all of the ordeals that you endured.

.....and I really thought we were roughing it with no tents, getting our own food, etc. when my Dad, brother and I hunted, trapped, fished and camped for many weeks at a time when we were younger.  That, of course, was lots of fun.  I don't think I could have made it through what you did under any circumstances.  I could probably have made the trip (when I was much younger), but wouldn't have been able to eat all the things you did.  I have a very weak stomach.

David and Judy, Thanks for letting us share your website.

LARRY AND LORETTA JACKSON tells us the "OZZIE AND LIZ COLES AND OZZIE'S SISTER, EMMA DORA SNYDER , were in town through the week of March 12th.  Unfortunately, they weren't able to stay in for our luncheon, but Ozzie gave us the go-ahead to publish their email address.

I was told that Loretta fixed an "excellent'" supper for the following.  Larry, Ozzie, Liz, Emma, BUTCH BUCKLEY, BULL MILLER, BOB AND GAIL MCKEE.  They had a wonderful time visiting.

Perhaps on their next trip to WV they will be able to stay longer and have lunch with all of us.  We'd love to see them.

NEWS CONCERNING JIM MILLER

I remembered talking with Gypsy Barker last November and she asked if Jim would know if we sent cards.  Thanks to her, I followed up and talked with JIM'S wife, BETTY JO, on Saturday before we all met for lunch.  She seemed so pleased that we were inquiring about him.  She mentioned a number of guys that she or JIM remembered and talked about.  She wanted to know about different ones so I will send you a separate note.

She said it had been a bit of a down day for her and that my call had perked her up.  She is quite happy that we will be sending cards to him and thinks it will be helpful to his recovery.

At some time during our conversation, I called JIM "Pudgy" and she had a crack in her voice.  She said that people he had met the last few years didn't know things like him nickname; he needs to hear familiar things from people he can connect with from the past.

She says he had a massive heart attack about 3-1/2 years ago and was dead for a period of time.  The doctors were able to bring him back, but it has left him with short term memory lost.  She says the doctors say that anything he can connect with from the past will be good for him.

Betty Jo says he will remember all of us and would be so happy to hear from us.  She thinks this will be most helpful for him.  I believe I understood her to say that maybe what she tells Jim may not stay with him.

In Betty Jo's words, "She and all of his family are trusting in God to bring him back completely."  She says he is still his same sweet, low speaking and quiet self.

I think Betty Jo also needs a card or two for support.  If any of you have ever been a caretaker you also understand what she must be going through.  Her email is bettyjomiller@mindspring.com.

Cards can be sent to "Pudgy" at  home . Jim is in a nursing home, but Betty Jo would like his cards sent home so she  and family can take them to him .

Jim Miller

Thanks in advance for the many cards you will be sending.

Love, Jackie

JOHN SLIMICK

It is amazing what one finds when one is looking  for something else.  This time it is an excerpt from a talk by John Gardner, then of Common Cause, and former presidential candidate, at the "You Can Make a Difference Conference" at Stanford some years ago:

"In the stable periods of history, meaning was supplied in the context of a coherent community and traditionally prescribed patterns of culture.  On being born into society you were heir to a whole warehouse full of meanings.

"Today you can't count on such a patrimony.  You have to build meaning into your life, and you build it through your commitments - - whether to religion, to an ethical order as you conceive it, to your life's work, to loved ones, to your fellow humans.

"People run around searching for identity, but is isn't handed out for free any more - - not in this transient, rootless, pluralistic society.  Your identity is what you've committed yourself to.

I know not everyone who reads this shares this feeling.  I'm sure many have found identity and meaning through the  traditional avenues.  But for many of us, I suspect, the merry-go-round of social change has placed us in a society and a culture that is far removed from 1958.  If one needs examples, consider the following: divorce in 1958 was a scandal, but today is all too common; the role of women has gone from the choice of homemaker or nurse or teacher or secretary to very much greater range of options.  College has gone from being for the few to being for the many - - there is no reason now for anyone who wants to try college to not get the opportunity, at lease for a semester or two.  Being a college teacher has gone from the master of the classroom and "what I say goes" to now when I have to concern myself with students' work schedules, court appearances, and even pregnancies - - all unthought of in 1958.

I am aware of the current obsession with the "Greatest Generation" which is the generation who fought WWII, but I think that many of us have had to cope with such extensive changes in our society and culture as to deserve a monument of our own.  Now it won't be built ever, but I think we can take some comfort in being the "Generation That Copes."  Now, I know that not everyone has coped.  I have a brother who could be the model for those who did not cope.  I believe that we had at least one classmate who could not cope with THEN, and left early, but would find 2001 much more tolerant than 1958.  Even so, I think that given the change that was described above, many of us in quiet and subtle ways have found our commitment and our identity. I salute you all.

THE LUNCH BUNCH!

This past Saturday, there were nine of us.

Jane Bennett Ferrell, Joan Bennett Belcher, Wanda Clay Colbert, Delores Cobb Anderson, Joe Bennett, Bill Coles, Raymond Barnett, Bull Miller and Jackie Frizzell Pauley.

We had a wonderful time.  Lots of laughter  and reminiscing.  I sure wish  more of you could make it on the third Saturday of each month.  You don't know what you're missing.

Speaking of the third Saturday, next month, April, Wendell & and his wife are going on a trip and they planned it to be in South Charleston so they could meet with us for lunch.  Make an special effort to be there to spend some time with him.

Now wouldn't you know that it was St. Patrick's Day and who do you

Of course,

During lunch the conversation got around to using the high technology of computers (doesn't that sound like we are all so smart...what a laugh for most of us...me in particular).  Anyway, Raymond brought up about how he put several antennas on his truck some years ago so he would appear to have a car phone in his truck because all the other contractors had one.  Boy, this fellow can sure make us all laugh.  Can't you just see him now??

Hey Guys and Gals:

I just wanted to give a special Thank You to BARBARA WEBB PRITT alias "The Queen of the Internet" and also "Our Super Detective".

She has been so successful finding a lot of our Lost Eagles.  Keep on hunting for us Ms. Detective.       Jackie

Hey Guy and Gals:

All of you have been so nice to thank me for getting the e-mail addresses together.  It suddenly occured to me you should know what started me on this mission.

Way back EARLY in 2000, CHARLES KATHOLI sent me an e-mail asking that I share with him any addresses that I had obtained.  I proceeded to clean up my list and thought...why not send it to everyone for whom I have an address and so started the saga.

As you can see, Charles deserves some of the credit for the whole idea of our website being started.  Bet ya didn't know that Charles, my boy.  Special Thanks to you.

I appreciate all of ;you being so helpful sending me e- mail addresses that you had found and especially for bearing with my many mistakes.  Some times I got so excited and ahead of myself, I forwarded the addresses too quickly without waiting to make sure they didn't return to me for one reason or the other.

I also hope that Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Meadows will forgive me for any terrible grammar and punctuation that I have used along the way.  Most times I try desperately to have some sort of recall on what they had taught me.  Then again, I sometimes do have that "senior moment" of forgetfulness....

This has truly been a exciting experience for me and I have enjoyed the conversations with all of our classmates.  I've had the extreme privilege to talk with so many when verifying their addresses.

Again, thanks to Charles and keep those addresses coming.......Jackie
