Hey Guys & Gals:

We had a great visit and good luncheon Saturday and we wish all of you could have been there.

Those who were able to come were:  Phyllis Fenwick, Bill Coles, William Smith, Bull Miller, Jane Monday, Delbert Kidd, Faye Collins, Erma Harris , Bill Meadows and myself.

* We were missing some of our regulars;  Jane and Joe had company.  Remember their older brother, Gee?  His daughter and her 5 kids came in to visit.

* Vesta & Earl had a family reunion to go to plus Earl was recuperating from the fall he had at church camp.  Since falling he has had hip surgery where they place a screw in his hip, he's taking therapy right now and they tell him he's way ahead of most.  He looked like he was walking really well.

*  Judy had promised her grandchildren they would go back to school shopping???

* Mona & Leo were still up on the Greenbrier.

* Dale changed cell phones and I just got the number from Bull and then couldn't get Dale to answer it.

* Faye was at lunch although she was very bruised up.  She was broad sided by a fellow who ran a red light a few days before.  Her airbag came out and beat her up pretty badly.   She said he was going so fast that he drug her car along with him until he finally came to a stop.  She had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance - the paramedics were quite concerned over the contusions, etc. she had.  She was one lucky gal to escaped without broken bones, etc.   Faye, we're so happy you are alright.

* The class of 1959 was also having their lunch gathering Saturday and they set up our tables on the same side - this enabled us to visit back and forth with them.  They looked so much older than we did although they said they told the waiters when they came in that they were with the younger group.  Oh come now...... Ha ha

We do hope you will consider trying to have lunch next month with us when we will meet on September 17th.  Remember the winds and snows will start blowing soon and you want to have that chance to come visit before this happens.

Love to all, Jackie

For those of you who missed it or do not watch GOOD MORNING AMERICA on ABC, in the morning.

I was interviewed, for Good Morning America, this morning, regarding my knife business. 08-15-11.  If you would like to watch the whole interview, go to Google, type in Good Morning America, and click on the motion interview, called... CASH IN ON ITEMS LEFT AT AIRPORTS.  This photo is grainy because I took it off of my computer, as I was being interviewed and as I was talking with the interviewer.

Hey people;

We had a wonderful time eating and visiting again yesterday.

Those who were there:  Joan, Bill Coles, Vesta & Earl, Faye & Jerry, Erma,
Judy Romano, Patsy Carr, Joe B. and me.

*  Patsy told us her daughter who had suffered a stroke some time ago has
now had another stoke.  Keep her in your prayers and thoughts.  She's very
young to have this happen.

*  Jane Monday's daughter who has cancer continues to feel better.  Great
update on her - Also keep her in your prayers and thoughts.

*  Other regulars who weren't there -  Bull was out of town - went to see
his sweetie, Phyllis was at the beach, William was at a woodworking class
and Mona & Leo had just been in town and had returned to their little
paradise on the Greenbrier.

Consider trying to join our group next month on the third Saturday.  Sorry
I'll have to miss that one as I have a calligraphy workshop in Huntington.

Stay safe this summer.  Love to all, Jake

THE KENNEDY CLUB   (Available in hardcover and ebook)

When Emily and Jack meet by chance on a Cape Cod beach, it's the beginning
of a tumultuous twenty-year romance that takes them into the eye of war
and the heat of politics. Along for the ride are four Harvard University
friends who are members of The Kennedy Club. Aspiring to the ideals of
former president John F. Kennedy, the group's goal is to get Jack elected
President of the United States. Emily and Jack fall in love, but will his
ambition to be president outweigh his love for her, and will she be able
to set aside her own career to help him achieve his dream? And will the
bond of their relationship withstand betrayal and the lust for power as
Jack fights to become the chief executive of the country?

Coop, Jack's best friend and trusted campaign manager gets caught up in
the fight to stop the destructive practice of mountaintop mining
devastating his home state of West Virginia. He becomes a terrorist
activist against the coal companies, putting Jack's political career in
jeopardy, and threatening Coop's relationship with the beautiful Adriana.

Received this from Jim O'Dell

Jim:

With a great sorrow in my heart, I write you about Charlie's home going to
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Memorial Day, May 30, at 4:30pm.  All
our family and grand kids were around him when he took his last breath.
His illness plus the pneumonia was just too much for his frail body.  He
is to be envied for where he went.  No more feeling tired, no more pain.
He absolutely loved people and life and knew someday he was gonna go, we
just didn't have a clue when.  I lost  my best friend in the world and
there's a hole in my soul right now.  I know God will be my strength and
give me direction.  I'm so scared right now about everything so keep the
prayers coming , please.  Thank you again for being the contact man.  If
someone would like to email me some insight, words of wisdom or just to
tell me a story about Charlie, Please pass on my email address.  Family
and friends have been so kind to us, son Chris and daughter Jenny.  They
have taken on the task of pretty much everything.  Charlie's obituary can
be found on Facebook/Charlie Cobbs. I'll keep in touch with you.  Charlie
donated his body to University Hospital in Baltimore, Md..  We'll be
having a memorial service for him on June 9th to celebrate his life.
Thank all who have kept us in their prayers and thoughts.

Janet and family

Classmates:

We had a great time getting together yesterday for another luncheon.
Those who were able to attend were: Joan, me, Faye & Jerry, Mona & Leo,
Garber & Katherine, Joe, Vesta & Earl, Martha Frizzell ('59) and Jason &
Sheila who are friends of "our very own motorcycle gang". ha ha

The weather was beautiful and everyone was anxious to get back "out there"
and do grass cutting, gardening, etc.

Garber & Katherine and Leo & Mona and their friends Jason & Sheila had all
ridden down to join us for lunch. How about that!!! They left Mill Point
around 8:30am in a bit of fog which cleared up quickly - thank goodness.
Took them 2-1/2 hours to Charleston.

It was so good to see them and to meet their friends. Jim and Katherine
are planning a ride to the Grand Canyon this summer. Didn't get a chance
to see what Mona & Leo have planned for the summer - they must let us
know.

We heard from Jane Monday and husband who had planned to join us for
lunch. Her husband, Jim Morris, had to go to the hospital for gallbladder
surgery. Jane's daughter, Lora Davie has been taking chemo treatments.
Jane said to tell all the gang hello and that she misses being at the
lunches. Jane, we will remember you and your family in our prayers and
thoughts. Keep us posted as to how everyone is progressing. We miss you
too.

* Jim & Elinor had planned to join us but Elinor had a fall and hurt
herself. I don't believe a huge injury, just enough they didn't want to
drive down from Beckley.

* We heard that Bull was on his way to visit his sweetie and will see us
next month.

* Dale is still suffering from the aftermaths of shingles.

* Bill Coles is feeling much better now that he's home from the hospital.

* Vesta & Earl were sporting a new car (beautiful blue) after he was
involved in a wreck a few weeks ago. Not Earl's fault!

* Joan was driving a beautiful silver car. She was lookin' spiffy!!!

Love to all, Jake & Joan

Received this from Jim O'Dell.  Thanks Jim....

Jim, wanted to bring you up to date on Charlie.  On Tuesday , Charlie had a biopsy of his clavicle to see if he has cancer or not in that one place.  That next day he woke up at 5:30pm and immediately had trouble breathing, telling me he was going to pass out.  911. Hurried away quickly with him to the hospital.  His air saturation in the ambulance was 66.  95-100 is normal.  They put a chest tube in, and a humongous C PAP machine which blew air in and sucked it out.  He never got rid of the pneumonia, back at its worst.  I've never in my life seen so many tubes, bells and whistles in my life.  He has numerous antibiotics going , plus he's swollen up with all the liquids they have been giving him.  I believe the nurse said 10 units.  Severely dehydrated.  Mersa started in his nose, a bacteria that can turn nasty.  They have him in a coma like state with drugs to keep him still and so he doesn't pull hoses out.  They had to strap his hands down.  As of this evening, they have cut back on the morphine to where he responds to his name, briefly.  He had to be put on total life support for a while, while the antibiotics began to work .  When they did the biopsy, they nicked the plura, which allowed air and fluid in his lungs.  It's surely been a struggle, we think he's almost turned the corner.  Tomorrow should tell us a lot. Please, please get your group of people you are friends with and pray hard.  The Lords plan for each of us is Perfect.  This we know and accept.  I believe HE still has plans for Charlie or I pray so.  Pray along with us that His will be done.  Thank you all for the wonderful heartfelt prayers already sent.  Will keep you  posted again when things change.  As ever

, Janet

Many of you will remember Richard Turley from the class of 19.

He has been booked by Bob Anderson to perform at the LaBelle on April 2nd.

Please note in case you didn't know that his name was changed to Turley
Richards many years ago.   Go to his website to read about Turley and what
all has happened to him since he left SC.  It's one of those "local boy
makes it big" kind of stories.

Many of you might want to get your tickets early.

We had a great time at lunch on Saturday, December 18th. Those attending were: Joan Belcher, Phyllis Fenwick, Bull Miller, Joe Bennett, Vesta & Earl Grinstead, Faye & Jerry Collins, Judy Romano, Mona Mallory, Bill Coles, Erma Harris and me.

I was quite happy that so many could take time out from their busy schedules while trying to get ready for Christmas to join us.

Just to fill you in on some of the things discussed –

· Leo was hunting so that’s why he wasn’t there. Hope he was successful in his hunt.

· Faye & Jerry both suffered mild heart attacks since we’d last seen them in November. They also started Saturday out with a little excitement. Jerry had gotten up very early to let the dog out and the storm door had hit on his hand cutting it. Faye woke up hearing Jerry call for her and once she found him she went into action bandaging his cut hand. Then she had to clean blood from chairs, Christmas bulbs in a bowl, carpet, etc. before she could leave the house. Just think all this and THEY STILL JOINED EVERYONE FOR LUNCH!!!

· Phyllis had driven down from their place in Canaan which had many inches of snow. Give this gal a big pat on the back for her efforts.

· Judy has been involved in gathering photos of South Charleston and it’s residence together for a book titled “Images of America SOUTH CHARLESTON.” She brought a copy of it to share with all of us and there are pictures of people you will recognize. The book goes on sale the first of January at Books A Million. Contact Judy for details on how to place an order. There are 300 pictures in the book and the price is $21.99. If you have a Books A Million card, you can make an advanced order now and get the book at a discount.

Enjoy your day and congratulations to those of you who were ready for Christmas. Many of us were struggling to make the deadline. Ha ha

Remember the reason we celebrate Christmas.

Love to all, Jake

The following is the obituary of John Lee Duncan's ('57) mother who was
104 years old.  Thelma and Jack raised their nephew Johnny Fenwick ('59).

My family had the pleasure of knowing Thelma for many years.  Jerry and I
bought our first house from Thelma and her husband Jack and then later we
moved across the street from them at our second home.  She had been our
daughter's first grade teacher and we all belonged to Rock Lake
Presbyterian Church together - so you can see our lives were closely
knitted together for many years (all this taking place in Rock Lake
Village.)

We will miss this wonderful woman and all she did for her neighbors.  Jackie

Thelma Irene Duncan

Thelma Irene Fenwick Duncan, who was born in Oswald, Raleigh County on February 9, 1906, over 104 years ago, was taken home to be with her God on November 5, 2010.

Thelma loved children, teaching and art. For many years she shared her gift of teaching with elementary school students and their families throughout Kanawha County. After she retired, she continued to teach artwork to Village Elementary School students as a guest instructor.

Thelma loved cooking, crafts and her church. She was a founding member of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church in South Charleston, where she taught Sunday school, played in the bell choir, participated in dance classes and hosted women's circles. She often gave crafts and baked goods, including what may have been the state's best homemade rolls and breads, to neighbors, friends and family.

Thelma loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. "Jack" Duncan; her brother, John Fenwick; and her sisters, Genevieve Shafer, Kathleen Cressman, and Margaret Mills.

Thelma is survived by her son, John L. Duncan and wife Marsha, of Dunbar; her nephew that she raised and loved as a son, John Fenwick and wife Phyllis, of South Charleston; her grandchildren, Krista Duncan Black and husband Jeff and son Duncan P. McMaster of South Charleston; Cathryn Carena and husband Mario and their children Cailyn and Gea of Dunbar and Torino, Italy; Christy Rife and husband Sam and their children Jacob and Seldon of Hurricane; Debbie Maas and husband Rick and their children Henry and Julia of Indianapolis, Ind.; David Fenwick and wife Carrie and their sons John, Grant and Abraham of Charleston; Vicki Judy and husband Bobby and their daughters Isabelle and Allison of Harmon; her sister, Virginia Sapp of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and her special friends, Mary Young of St. Albans and Ruth and Charles Hendrix of South Charleston.

A service to honor the life of Thelma Duncan will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, November 8, 2010 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with the Rev. Rick McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Family and friends may visit two hours prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Rock Lake Presbyterian Church, 905 Village Drive, South Charleston, WV 25309 (304)768-4141.

Memories of Thelma Duncan may be shared by visiting www.snodgrassfuneral.com and selecting the obituary.

Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, is handling the arrangements.

Many SC kids went to school with one of the Payne children and Danny, the youngest of six children,  has died from a ATV accident.

Charles D. Payne
Charles D. “Danny” Payne, 64, of Hansford passed away Saturday, October 23, 2010.

Danny was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He took great pride in his family and cherished his many friendships. Danny was born to William and Fleta Stuck Payne on May 14, 1946.

He grew up as the youngest of six children in South Charleston's Kenna Homes. Danny began working at an early age in a filling station, and followed it up with experiences in construction, contracting, emergency services, auto sales, and coal mining.

He was proud of his memberships with the United Mine Workers of America and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 1040 in Montgomery. Danny enjoyed actively supporting FOE's children's activities, and the New River Episcopal Ministries Food Bank.

After many working years, Danny filled his days of retirement with frequent dates with his wife, Mikki, and trips to visit his children in Tennessee and Ohio. He developed a love for outdoor activities that included hunting, rides in the woods, and mountain top cookouts with his closest friends. Danny was quick to stir up WVU fans with his support of Marshall University, and always enjoyed a playful banter with anyone who would respond.

He is survived by his soulmate and wife, Mikki Payne, of Hansford; children, Erin Newell and husband, Ned, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Vince Payne and wife, Lisa, of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Evan Newell, and two twin Paynes to be named in May 2011; siblings, James “Peachie” Payne of Charlotte, N.C., Frank and wife, Linda, of Midland, N.C., Cookie Freese and husband, Steve, of Greensboro, N.C., Cathy Spessard and husband, Jim, of Greensboro, N.CC, and Bobby and wife Cil, of South Charleston.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 27.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 28, at O'Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations to his grandson's college fund. Checks can be made payable to “UESP” and mailed to Utah Educational Savings Plan, P.O. Box 145100, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-5100, or online at www.uesp.org. Be certain to reference the UESP account number (200807564) and beneficiary's name (Evan E. Newell).

Expressions of sympathy may be sent at www.odellfuneralhome.com.

Kristopher Kenneth Samples

Kristopher Kenneth Samples, 27, of South Charleston died at home on Sunday, September 26, 2010, after a long illness.

He leaves behind his dear mother and father, Donna and Ken Samples; along with his maternal grandparents, Robert and Betty Knightstep.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walter and Bernice Samples.

Also, sharing in this loss are his aunts, Robbie Coleman and husband, Matt, Barbara Lucas and husband, David, and Faye Burgess and husband, Frank.

Joining them in sorrow at this time are his Samples uncles, Sonny and wife, Sue, Bud and wife, Bev, Jack and partner, Donna, Walter Jr., Bill and wife, Peggy, Ed and wife Diane, and Roger.

His immediate family also includes an endless number of cousins who love and miss him very much.

He would have also wanted to wish a special note of goodbye to his "special furry friends," Luke and Leia.

Kristopher attended Richmond Elementary and South Charleston Junior High and graduated from South Charleston High School in 2001. Pursuing an advanced degree in both Japanese language and art history, he had taken classes through the University of Tennessee and Harvard University.

While he struggled with health issues throughout his short life, his spirit and drive were never dampened. It brought such great joy to him by doing things for others. Among his many causes, he was very much a supporter of animal protection and the preservation of nature.

He was loved by all who knew him. He will be missed by everyone who had been blessed enough to know this special young man.

As Kristopher had requested, there will be no visitation or funeral.

Arrangements are being made by Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.

Messages of condolences will be accepted on behalf of the family by the funeral home.

What a glorious day we spent at Leo & Mona's summer home on the great Greenbrier River, Saturday, September 18th.  The whole day was just what the doctor ordered for everyone.  Nice and breezy at times keeping it at a very comfortable temperature all day complete with sunshine.  A note:  Mona & Leo built this new cabin after losing their other cabin (which was located at the same site) to flooding in 1985 which was known as "the 100 year flood."  John Fenwick and Leo did a trade off helping each other build their "home away from home" places - Phyllis & John have a wonderful place in Canaan.  Now each year when Mona & Leo leave for the winter, they move all their furniture and belongings so they don't have to worry about flooding again.  Great idea!

Those who showed up were:  Joan, Joe, Judy, Bull, Butch, Garber & Katherine (arriving on their motorcycle), Barbara & daughter Susan, Martha Williams Frizzell (59), Jim & Elinor, Max & Becky (VA), Erma, Patsy, Phyllis & John, Delbert, David "Tex"Loos (VA) and me.   That's 21 people.

Mona & Leo wouldn't let us bring anything....they did it ALL and a fine job they did.   We all ate like little pigs!   Great food - pulled pork, hot dogs, slaw, chips, potato salad, pasta salad baked beans and drinks.  For dessert we had brownies and bread pudding with Bourbon sauce drizzled over it.  Hmmmmmmmmm - Everything was really delicious.  Special note for the record:  Leo made the pasta salad and Bourbon sauce for the bread pudding.

Joan, as usual, brought the cards to be mailed to classmates and their parents who have been sick or are shut-ins.  Love her heart she never forgets.  I just can't let this precious moment go by without telling that when we read the cards, Joan in such a haste to make the cards said "we went to Leo & Mona Turner's home"....now think about that for a moment....Leo got a big laugh out of this.

We had our usual photographers taking pictures.  I know Max, Joan, Joe, Jim and Barbara had  their cameras out and were just clickin' away.   We will post these pictures to the class website:   www.schs1958.com

What a wonderful host and hostess we had for the day.   We sat out on the very wide porch complete with swing, glider, very comfortable chairs and many chairs scattered all over the yard....all seating overlooking the Greenbrier River.   The river was just a few yards away from us and it made a very vivid scene with rocks, an occasion ripple brought on by a fish catching a bug or two, people wading and the river just lazily rolling by.  I could have stayed all week as probably most felt, but it was soon approaching time to head for our homes.

Leo & Mona - Thanks so much for such a splendid day which we won't forget!!!  Hope you've survived all of us.  ha ha  Wish everyone could have made it.

Love to all, Jake

Hey guys and gals:

We unfortunately didn't get to see many of our classmates who were at the Grand Reunion held the weekend of (July 23-25).  Many had other plans and couldn't get to us at the Ice Arena and there was a mistake made on the information given out about where classes would meet and the time.  They actually said we'd meet at the Ice Arena, but the time was given from 9:30 pm to 12 midnight.  This was wrong as we had the room from 7pm to 12 midnight - there were a lot who came after 9:30pm - they hunted for us until they found us at the Ice Arena.  ha ha

Butch made arrangements for us to have a meeting room at the Ice Arena and it was fantastic...cool, clean,  comfortable and cheerful.  He also made arrangements for the Penn Station Subs to cater for us.  Yum, yum...sub sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches (and close your eyes and imagine)  warm chocolate chip cookies!  hmmmm  Absolutely the best!!!

We heard the following unfortunate reports:

1 - Norma Jean Baker Michael and husband Larry couldn't make it because Norma got sick after supper.

2 - Barbara Wolfe Harvey had planned to come, but had minor surgery that morning and fell asleep probably because of antiseptics... so she didn't get to come.

3 - Delbert Kidd slipped in water at a city swim meet and hurt his hand.

4 - This was the first EVER reunion that Janice Pauley had been to - we're so happy she got to come this year.

5 - I forgot to mention that we had a celebrity show up on Friday night.  Many spotted him, but Jane Monk Monday recognized him immediately with her keen eyes .  Joining us for the evening was George W. Bush.....OF COURSE, we're kidding - it was our own Dick Meeks.   Dick says he is often mistaken for George W.    What do you think?????????
If you didn't get to come - we really missed you and probably talked about you since you weren't there.
You know that isn't true unless it was "good talk and sweet memories of all of us in the class of '58."

Hope to see you next time and remember to save the date for our upcoming August 21st lunch.

Love to all, Jake

Hey people:

The Garber's are home safely!  HOORAY!!!  As you can see from their email below - they came home a little early because of bad weather and bad roads (August 9).  Remember I got the first email from them on June 30th when they left.  They've been gone quite a while.

I'm happy they had a safe motorcycle trip to Alaska and sorry about the weather, etc.

8/7/10

Hey people:

I recently received another postcard written on 8/1/10 from Jim & Katherine.  This is what Kathy wrote:

Just wanted to let you know that we are in the lower 48.  We have had quite an adventure with the rain and bad roads.   The Ferry was interesting, met a lot of bikers on the boat.  One fellow was 75 years young.  He was from Ohio.  We are slowly meandering our way back to WV.  Love, Jim & Kathy

Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts to have a continued safe trip and that they will arrive in WV safe and sound.

Hey Jake, here we are in Laramie, WY this evening. We are slowly making our way back home. We have been skirting a thunderstorm all day long.  We were going to camp, but the threat of rain changed our plans.  We are cutting our trip a little short due to the weather and road construction.   Our original plans were to go to the Grand Canyon after we got off the Ferry, but with the heat in that area and road construction we decided against it and we're heading home. We hope to be there by the middle of next week.  We try to check the weather before we start so we can dodge the storms.

Keep us in your prayers. Love,Jim/Kathy
P.S. We were in Canada and Alaska for 23 days and 19 of those days it rained with temps. in 40's and 50's. Brrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Jackie,

We hope all is well with you.  We are in Valdez, Alaska.  This is the first pretty day we've had for a week.  Rain! Rain!  The temperature about 50 degrees.  We've stayed in some interesting campgrounds.  We have to pay for our showers in some camps.  75 cents for 2 minutes.  Did you ever try to take a shower in 2 minutes???  Our ferry leaves Haines the 26th, so we should be back in the lower states by the end of the month.

Love, Jim & Kathy

July 22, 2010

Hey there people:

We had a fantastic luncheon on Saturday with the following classmates attending:  Joan, Gypsy & David, Max & Becky, Bill, Vesta & Earl, Faye and son Mike Collins, Delbert, Butch, Jane and granddaughter, Alexandria, Barbara Wolfe and daughter, Suzi Simmons, Erma, Patsy, William and me.  As you can see we had lots of travelers and visitors whom we enjoyed having with us!

Notes:

*  Gypsy told a friend that she was traveling all the way to WV "just to have lunch."  Can you imagine what a surprise that was to her friend???  ha ha  Our lunches attract people from all over the United States.  Gypsy & David flew from AR to TN where they visited with David's father and then drove on to WV.  They were going back to TN and visit a little longer with David's father.

* Max & Becky (VA) drove down so they could especially see their ole friends Gypsy & David and, of course, their other old '58 friends.

* Poor Jerry Collins had to have his lower teeth pulled so he was home recuperating so Mike came with his mother Faye.  It was sure good to see such a nice young man again.

* Jane brought her sweet granddaughter, Alexandria, who was such a hit with everyone and a very nice and beautiful little gal.

* Barbara was fortunate enough to have her daughter, Suzi '('78), come with her so she could visit with all of us.  We enjoyed having Suzi come to lunch also.  Suzi is married to Mark Simmons (SC Fire Dept).  Barbara reminds us that Suzi's son, Justin & wife, are the ones who had her first great grandchild, Riley Anne, who was born in May.

* Several of us went over to the SC Ice Arena and Butch showed us around.   Our classmates will be meeting there this Friday night (July 23rd) during the Grand Reunion from 7 until midnight.   And no.....we won't be ice skating although there have been special request to have me do a special number on the ice.  Oh sure, can't you just see me now - I can't even walk on level ground without staggering around.  ha ha  We do hope many of you will come by and have a few snacks, many laughs and enjoy visiting with each other.  Bring your family members with you. There is no charge for coming to this gathering.  Please pass the word on to classmates who don't have internet services.

Love to all, Jake

Guess where we are? We made it to Alaska!!! We crossed the border yesterday. We are staying a few days with my nephew who is stationed here at the Air Force Base. We've traveled about 5000 miles so far. We've had a great  time, the country is beautiful.

We plan to go to Denali National Park, Anchorage, Homer, Seward and then back to Tok. We want to spend about 2 weeks in Alaska, camping mostly. We plan on catching the Intercoastal Ferry in Haines,Ak. on the 26th of July. Keep us in your prayers.....Love,Jim/Kathy

Once again those two friends of ours, Jim & Katherine Garber, are on their way for a three months adventure traveling through Alaska.   Keep in mind they are traveling by motorcycle.  I’ll give Katherine a big hooray for keeping up with Jim.  Ha ha   Keep them in your thoughts and prayers for a very safe journey.

Kathy will send me postcards and I’m sure it’s alright to share with all of you.  I just received the first one written on 6/30/10.

Love to all, Jake

We’ve made it to Kalispell, MT.  We are staying at a KOA cabin for a couple of days to rest and do laundry before we head into Canada.   We’ve had a great ride, although we had to dodge some thunderstorms and tornadoes in IL.  The country is so beautiful.  Montana ranks right up there with WV.  God has truly blessed us with a great country.

Dr. C. Carl Tully

He wanted to be a “people doctor” and in 1953 he began to realize his dream when he opened his practice in South Charleston.

Dr. C. Carl “Doc” Tully passed away on July 3, 2010, at the age of 97. He was born June 22, 1913, in Charleston to the late Christopher Columbus and Eva Lena Lanham Tully. He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret Ann Tully; two sons, C. Carl Tully Jr. and wife Faye of Bradenton, Fla., and Richard R. Tully and wife Janet of LaGrange, Ky.; five grandchildren, Chris Tully, Karen Staten, Debbie Tully, Kara Waite and Amanda Fulmer; nine great-grandchildren; and loving sister, Kathleen Ryder of South Charleston.

Carl graduated from Charleston High School in 1931 and attended West Virginia Tech and Morris Harvey College while working for the U. S. Postal Service and Charleston Fire Department.

After enlisting in the U. S. Army during World War II, he attended West Virginia University and finished medical school at the University of Virginia in 1947. He served as a commissioned officer at the U. S. Marine Hospital in Baltimore, Md., from 1947 through 1948. During the Korean War, he was called back to active duty with the U. S. Army from 1951 through 1953.

In order to keep his two sons, as well as other boys in the neighborhood, involved in constructive activities, Dr. Tully organized and coached the first little league and pony league baseball teams in South Charleston. He also started a neighborhood football league. He was also chairman of the committee that designed and built Little Creek Park.

During his twelve years of service, including two years as president, with the Kanawha County Board of Education, he orchestrated the construction of four high schools and one junior high school in Kanawha County.

He became a specialist in family practice and in 1974 West Virginia University enlisted his help to head up a new family practice program at Thomas Hospital. After retiring from the family practice program, Dr. Tully served as the medical director at St. Francis Hospital for eleven years. He further served in training emergency medical technicians for Kanawha and surrounding counties. He retired from St. Francis and became an associate director for the West Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission for two and one-half years.

He was president of the WV Division of the American Cancer Society and a fifty-year member of the Scottish Rite, and Beni Kedem Shrine. Dr. Tully has received numerous awards and certifications, including a Distinguished West Virginian Award, for his service and contributions as a “people doctor”, 1993 Family “Doc” award from the American Academy of Family Physicians, and in 2002 South Charleston Auxiliary Gym was dedicated to Dr. Tully “who dared to dream”, 2006 Alumni of the year from Morris Harvey College.

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the WVU School of Medicine, P. O. Box 9100, Morgantown, WV 26506-9100, or Charleston University, 2300 MacCorkle Avenue, S.E., Charleston, WV 25304.

Visitation will be held at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Charleston from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 5, and funeral service will be held at the St. Paul United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 6, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Steve White officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Online condolences may be sent to www.wilsonfuneralsandcremations.com.

REMEMBERING CARBIDE'S SUMMER CAMPS -- 28th Year Reunion!

Save the Dates!

Once again, we will be hosting an informal mini-reunion during the weekend of July 16-18, 2010. We'll have the usual meet-and-greet get-together on Friday night, and the visit to Blue Creek on Saturday/Sunday!

We'll also do a little planning for the BIG 30th reunion in 2012
-- 30 years since the last camping summer on the Creek!

FRIDAY, JULY 16: An informal get together beginning at approximately 6:00pm at the FOP Hall in Charleston. Their bar and beer prices are excellent, and we'll have some pizza and wings on order!
Directions:
From I-64 Dunbar Exit, take Roxalana Rd. to WV St. Rt. 62. Turn left onto 62, go 1/2mile and turn right onto Woodrum's Lane. Go 1/4 mile to FOP on the right. There should be signs posted.

You can also take WV 62 at the intersection in North Charleston where the Cold Spot is. Just follow it approx. 1 mile to Woodrum's Lane on the right, and go 1/4 mile to FOP on the right.

SATURDAY, JULY 17: Visit the former campsites on Blue Creek. Campers can make their way out to The Creek late morning and meet at the Hunting & Fishing Club, with informal visits to the
Camelot and Carlisle campsites during the afternoon. We will be using the Hunting & Fishing Club only as a rendezvous point this year - overnight will be at the Camelot or Carlisle sites.

OVERNIGHT CAMPING: For those interested in overnight camping, we will be camping at the former Camelot & Carlisle campsites.

NOTE: Food is BYO this year. (We're saving up for 2012 and the BIG 30th! So if you're going to get hungry while at the Creek, you must plan on one of the following options:

a) fishing for your dinner in the creek
b)
catching and cooking the appropriate wildlife in the area
c)
stealing Randy's can of beans out of the campfire before it explodes
d)
bringing something with you...

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS: Visitors often stay at the Wingate Inn located at 402 Second Avenue, South Charleston. (304) 744-4444. This and other nearby hotels are listed when you do a Google search for South Charleston Hotels.

We look forward to seeing you this July as we make our annual pilgrimage to The Creek! Stay tuned for updates as they develop and check the camp website www.carbidecamps.net, or the Carbide Camps Facebook page for updates, information and details.

Please confirm your attendance by responding to this email, or by replying to Randy Rice on his Carbide Camps Facebook page.

Sincerely,
Your Reunion Committee

WHAT A DELIGHTFUL AFTERNOON!!!

There were 16 of us who showed up for lunch Saturday.   Joan, Mona & Leo Mallory, Joanne Bostic, Phyllis Fenwick, Bull Miller, Joe Bennett, Jim & Katherine Garber (down from Pocahontas Co.), Vesta & Earl Grinstead, William Smith, Bill Coles, Judy Romano, my sister-in-law, Martha Williams Frizzell ('59), and me.

It was bright and sunny outside.   Everyone had a great time talking and reminiscing.  After most had left, Leo, Mona, Jim, Katherine and myself sat outside talking - it sure is good to catch up with old friends.

A few tid bits to pass on:

* Big news is our "adventure couple"  Jim & Katherine are going to leave sometime in June on their motorcycle to travel to Alaska again!  They went for two months to do this before, but now they plan on three months so they can see more of the country.  Katherine plans to keep in touch with me so I can forward information about their whereabouts, etc. and send pictures if possible.   WOW, I can't imagine going that far on a motorcycle.   They will camp out all the way stopping for food wherever they find a restaurant and then having a nice dinner most evenings.   Jim sure met his match when he married Katherine.   By the way, they have their first grandchild - a grandson who is 2-1/2 years old.  They showed us a picture of him taking a bath and making the soap bubbles pile up on his chin so he'd have a beard like grandpa.  ha ha

*Mona & Leo have taken several loooong trips on their motorcycles thru the years.  They've gone to Niagara Falls twice, Key West, FL and once to Sturgis, SD where they hold the biggest annual motorcycle rally in the country.

* Joanne had hip replacement and we sure are proud of our gal.  She came home the next day with only a cane and needed no medicines.  She's gone through rehab and believe me she is walking just wonderfully.  She says she feels no pain now which is an excellent outcome!

* Judy wants to encourage our people to bring memorabilia you might have from any of the Chemical Companies in Kanawha Valley to be placed on display at the SC Museum during the Grand Reunion.

* This also brought up some conversation about the Grand Reunion which will be held July 23 - 25th.  We're not sure we have a class representative for the GR so remember that date.  It's my understanding that no information has been sent out yet to any of the classes, so you'd best check into making your plans when they do send out the forms.  If I get more info, I will let you know.

* We plan in the next few months to go to Mona and Leo's home in Pocahontas County for lunch.  Everyone is invited so be thinking about it and when the time comes we'll need a count of some sort so they will know how many of us plan to invade their quiet home in the mountains.  ha ha

Mona & Leo's grandson Josh & his wife Tracy are expecting another daughter in August -  they plan to name her Sailor.   Sailor has a big sister named Zailee who will be 3 years old in June.

* Bill Coles' wife, Diana, never had a play house growing up and she got one a couple of years ago from Bill.  He has it sitting down in the back yard amongst 100 red bud trees.   Here is a picture of her cute little house.   In turn, Bill has a covered gazebo which he loves to retreat too.

NOTE: If this picture doesn't show up - sit tight and I will send again soon.

All of you should start making plans for next month's luncheon.   We always look forward to getting together with our classmates.

Have a great time until we see you again.   That should read "Happy trails to you, until we meet again....."

Love to all, Jake

Spring is definitely blooming, especially at the corner of Country Club Boulevard and Chestnut Street in Spring Hill.

The entrance to Country Club Acres has been beautified with spring flowers and other plants, thanks to the efforts of longtime friends and residents of the area, Judy Romano and Joan Belcher.

"We adopted the corner of Chestnut Street and Country Club Boulevard," Romano said.

The women received help from South Charleston Public Works Director Gerald Burgy, whose department also built a wall and placed a sign at the entrance to the neighborhood.

"We helped them out and put some dirt in there, too," Burgy said,

Burgy called Romano and Belcher the "Country Club Acres girls" for their efforts.

A patch of daffodils at the site once bloomed along D Street in South Charleston. They were dug up during a streetscape project, and Romano asked city officials if she could have them to re-plant at the Country Club Acres entrance.

In a way, the daffodils have come full circle. When Romano worked for the American Cancer Society about 10 years ago, she sold some extra daffodils that the ACS had on hand as a fundraising project to the City of South Charleston, which planted them along D Street.

Some of those same flowers are now blooming at Chestnut Street and Country Club Boulevard.

"They're beautiful -- they're the first breath of spring," Romano said.

Belcher, who lives just a few doors up from the entrance sign, has also planted flowers in a wooded area directly across from her house on Country Club Boulevard.

"While sitting on my front porch, all I saw was a wooded area that was not very pretty to look at, so that is what gave me the idea to spruce it up a little," Belcher said.

Over the last three years, Belcher has planted daffodils, lilies, pampas grass, buttercups and ground cover.

"I really didn't intend to do as much as I have done, but now I'm glad I did. I will have different flowers blooming all summer," she said.

An avid gardener, she and Romano have been friends for a long time.

"We graduated together from South Charleston High School," Belcher said.

The two women hope other South Charleston residents, including those of nearby Spring Hill Mountain, will join them in their beautification efforts.

"Joan and I challenge all other residents to spruce up their neighborhoods," Romano said.

Burgy said his department would assist residents who want to spruce up their South Charleston neighborhoods.

"We'll help them get started," he said.

Guys & Gals:

I received this from our classmate Paul Sharps and felt it was funny and you'd enjoy reading it.  Jake

Jackie,

We loved this story about how the locals in Montcoal looked after the press crew. I totally agree with Peter Prengaman’s conclusion.

Below is a little WV humor which you might enjoy

Best Wishes,

Paul

Copper wire:

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, New York scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion, that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, A story in the LA Times read: "California archaeologists, after finding  200 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers"

One week later. A local newspaper in West Virginia reported the following:
"After digging as deep as 30 feet in his pasture near Beckley , WV .  Bubba, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Bubba has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, West Virginia had already gone wireless".

Mountaineers are such a proud bunch

COMMENTARY: My Friend Sam Huff, the Coal Miner's Son

By Rene A. Henry

Seattle, WA (HNN) -– Sam Huff and I have been good friends since 1954. If he had not been a great football player, we would have never met. He was the first person in his family who did not work in the coal mines and who graduated from college. I am so glad he chose the career he did.

Had it not been for a football scholarship at West Virginia University, Sam Huff would not have been a consensus All-American and go on to be one of the greatest linebackers to ever play college or professional football. Or be inducted in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and numerous other halls of fame. Or become a successful businessman, sports broadcaster, and horse breeder. Among his scores of honors, his number was the first retired of any Mountaineer athlete.

Huff’s “hometown” was Jamison Mine No. 9 Coal Camp, a company town near Farmington, W. Va. He was one of six children. The family lived in a rowhouse with no shower, bathtub, toilet or running water. “My father would come home from work completely covered in black coal dust,” he said. “Every day my mother would boil water so he could bathe in hot water in an old laundry tub. The rowhouses, stores and everything in the town were owned by the Jamison Coal and Coke Company.”

Every time there is a mining disaster I think of Sam. November 13, 1954, I was the WVU Sports Information Director and with the football team, ranked 16th in the nation, just after a 20-6 win over William & Mary, where I had graduated a few months earlier. Our chartered DC-4 plane was ready to take off from the Newport News, Va. airport when William Dent “Bill” Evans, editor of The Fairmont Times, told Coach Art “Pappy” Lewis and me there had been an explosion in Jamison Mine No. 9. Evans had no other details. Coach Lewis then told Sam and said the pilots would be kept informed with any news on the flight home. If the explosion had happened one hour earlier, Sam would have been the only surviving male in his family. Fifteen miners were killed.

Fourteen years later, Consolidated Coal Co. owned the mine, known as Consol No. 9, when an explosion on November 20, 1968 took the lives of 78 miners. Sam lost five relatives. Tremors from the mine explosion were felt 12 miles away in Fairmont. The bodies of 19 miners who perished were never recovered and the mine was permanently sealed.

Whenever there is a mine disaster I think of my friend Sam. I called him when I heard the news about Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch Mine disaster in Montcoal. “I love West Virginia,” he said. “But the theme song of our state should be ‘Sixteen Tons.’” He then sang: “You load sixteen tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. Saint Peter, don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go; I owe my soul to the company store.”

“If you don’t die in a mine, chances are black lung disease will kill you,” he told me. Black lung caused the death of his youngest brother when he was only 60.

The 1968 disaster at No. 9 was the catalyst for Congress to pass the 1969 Coal Mine Safety and Health Act to increase mine safety and inspections. The actual cause of was never determined, but contributing factors were inadequate ventilation and control of methane gas and coal dust. The cause of the deaths of the 29 miners in Massey’s Upper Big Branch mine last week has not yet been announced but the disaster must be a wakeup call for Congress to give more power to oversight and regulatory agencies to protect miners and insure that justice is swift for violators.

According to Steven Mufson of The Washington Post, Massey Energy has been cited frequently for safety violations including two citations just the day before the April 5 explosion, and 57 times in March, mainly for poor ventilation of dust and methane. The U.S. Mine safety and Health Administration cited the mine in the previous five years for 1,342 safety violations and proposed fines of $1.89 million. Massey has contested 422 of those violations and the fines.

I’m glad that Sam was determined to find another career other than mining and to get a college degree. Otherwise, he could have been a victim in one of the mine disasters instead of a four-year starter on the greatest football teams in Mountaineer history. After WVU, he played eight years with the New York Giants and six with the Washington Redskins, played in five Pro Bowls, named to the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team and is honored in the Redskins’ Ring of Fame. He was the first NFL player featured on the cover of Time magazine and in 1960, CBS broadcast a one-hour television special, “The Violent World of Sam Huff.”

What a wonderful tribute from an "outsider"...to the people of West Virginia.....Makes me proud to be a West Virginian.

From an Associated Press editor based out of Georgia.

It would be embarrassing if it were not so humbling.

Hours after the West Virginia mine explosion Monday, scores of journalists from all over the country started arriving — in a very rural area with no communications or places to sleep closer than an hour's drive away.

When the governor began giving press briefings at Marsh Fork Elementary School (this week happens to be spring break, so the children are out), journalists began getting comfortable at the site a few miles from the mine entrance, and we never left. By Tuesday, a couple dozen satellite trucks filled the parking lot, and classrooms with tiny chairs and paintings on the walls were turned into newsrooms and bedrooms.

And all of a sudden there was food — a lot of food. Pepperoni pizza. Pulled pork and beans. Fried chicken, potatoes and green beans. Cookies. Crackers. Doughnuts of all stripes.

Usually I lose a few pounds while covering stories like this. The deadlines are too tight, the access to food often limited. This time, I'll be going home a little rounder, and with a touched heart.

The food was cooked by residents and donated by businesses in this community. Some of it came by way of a local Red Cross, a Wal-Mart and a United Way, but even more was the home cooking of kind West Virginians who just wanted to take care of us.

Imagine, here we are, an aggressive and hard-charging bunch of journalists in the middle of this devastated community, and it's THEY who are taking care of US!

The kindness hasn't been lost on any of us. By Thursday, two plastic jars — "school collection" and "community collection" — were put out, and by Friday both had a few hundred dollars. I feel like we owe this school and these people so much more.

When I asked interim principal Shelly Prince how folks could be so giving at a time like this, she said that many felt it was soothing to help others. This situation made them feel helpless, and helping others was doing something. She also said it gave people a chance to show the world what West Virginians are "really like."

"Often on TV, we are not portrayed in such a good manner. We often are portrayed as ignorant and backward," she said. "But we are just ordinary people who live ordinary lives."

I have to disagree. These people are extraordinary.

February 2010

Hey Gang:

We had a wonderful time yesterday.   Everyone was so happy to see that "big yellow thing in the sky" (quote taken from someone at lunch.  ha ha)  I've really missed it and we are seeing it again today.  Yea!!!  Now I know one day soon the temperature is going to go down again - I believe they said Tuesday and then we can expect snow AGAIN!!!  So we are enjoying this beautiful weekend now.

Those who were at lunch:  Joan, me, Bull, Judy, Dale, Joe, Vesta & Earl, Mona, Leo, Bill C., Raymond, Faye & Jerry, William and Butch.  Count 'em folks - that's 16 people.  (If you don't know whom these people are - just ask me - I figured you'd been getting our lunch reports long enough to identify everyone.)

NOTE:  Since last month the class of '59 has been coming to Applebee's on the same day we meet.   We get to visit with them too.

* Sorry to report that Patsy Atkins fell and broke her leg.   She had to have surgery and won't be able to walk for 3 to 6 months.  Heard this from Blanche Ewart Harrison ('59).

* George Dorsey had a heart attack on January 19 and had 5-by pass surgery.  I'm happy to report that he is doing well now!  Heard this from his sister Peggy Dorsey Cavendar ('59).

*Bull Miller has been taking care of his ex-sister-in-law Libby Miller for many years and she passed away this month.  I know Bull will miss her terribly.  I know Libby appreciated him always being there for her.   That Bull is a good friend.

(If you'd like to send a card to Patsy, George or Bull and don't have their home address, just contact Joan or myself.)

Try to come join us at one of the lunches - we do have fun visiting, eating, etc.

Love to all, Jake

PS   I still haven’t gotten all the things off my computer that I need to save…will be taking it to the repair shop once I do this task.  I truly have appreciated Joan posting the messages for me during this period.  I CAN send and receive emails, but I am worried about sending to our group that has well over a hundred people.  I do not have a virus – something is messed up with my Outlook Express.

Stanley Kinder, husband of Carroll Pack Kinder, passed away in Florida the week of February 4, 2010.

Stanley had been in declining health the last few years and had recently had some surgery, however his death was very unexpected.  I have not been able to find an obituary yet but here is a little blurb on the Patriot Guard website.

Mr. Kinder passed away this past Monday after leading an extremely active life up until just the last few years.  He joined the Merchant Marines during WW II mainly because he wasn't old enough to get in the regular Army. When the Korean War broke out he changed services and joined the Army, then he volunteered for AIRBORNE training and as if that wasn't enough he then volunteered for RANGER school.  When he was discharged from the Army his rank was a SGT.

Mr. Kinder leaves behind his wife, Carroll and 3 children.

Message from Karen Cash . . .

Hazel Childress has a special birthday (34 and holding) on January 28th.  We are celebrating this on Sunday, January 31st at the South Charleston High School Piazza.  The open house celebration will be from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.  If you know anyone that would like to attend please spread the word.  This is not a surprise, she does know we are planning a party, she doesn't like surprises, nor does she like to tell her age.

If you are unable to attend but would like to send a card, note or letter I am sure she would be pleased.  You may send them to Hazel Childress C/O Karen Cash, 1015 Greenland Circle, South Charleston, WV 25309.  I will surprise her on Sunday with the cards.

In case you didn't know Hazel started teaching when she was 21.  Worked for Kanawha County Schools for 45 years.(44 years at SCHS.)  Retired in 1996 and has volunteered in the office, almost everyday since.  What a special lady.  If you have any questions contact Karen at 304-421-3079.

As many of you know, my sister, Kay has been battling inoperable pancreatic cancer since July. Finally and amazingly she has had some positive news. We all want to thank each of you for your support, good thoughts, prayers and messages of good will. We know we're looking at a continuing fight but this is wonderful! No one says it better than Kay....

"Today was my regular chemo day, and I requested that my regular oncologist, Dr. Frenette, come back and see me.  He did - armed with pictures of the CT scan from Sunday and my previous CT scan from 11-4-09.  I received unbelievable news that the air pockets that the technician saw on the scan were in fact areas where the tumor USED to be.  This does not mean that the tumor is entirely gone and there are still areas of tissue they think may either be cancer, diseased tissue or just plain scar tissue.  This is the BEST news we could have ever hoped for.  The doctor said it would not reduce anymore than it already has.

For me, this means more time, more time, more time - I am one of very few pancreatic patients who responded to chemo so favorably.  The doctor says he can't predict how or what this means - essentially just that he sees it very rarely and it's very positive!!  With this nasty disease, my next CT scan could show something worse, but for now - time to celebrate!!!

I will continue to stay on my chemo regimen as long as I can tolerate it.  However, if I feel I need a few weeks' break from it, I now have the ability to take it.  My main problems will be dealing with the side effects of the chemo and continued effects of the disease.

What else is there to say?  I am humbled, cautious, happy, nervous and, for the very first time ever....hopeful.  Thank you all so much for those prayers and good wishes.  It works!!  In the last six months, all results of all my tests and treatments have been negative.  I hardly know how to act with this.

I will continue this fight for sure.  Thank you ALL so much - I love you each and every one." Kay

Wow, we are so happy. Keep us in your thoughts and join us in a happy dance! Love, M.A.

I'm looking for information for the SCHS 2010 Grand Reunion.  All I've heard is talk about it.  You indicate that it has already been scheduled and you aare not publishing anything about it.  It is not too early to get started because the SCHS Class of 1957 has scheduled a get together in August.  Kinda expensive to make two trips from California!

What say ye about some info for everyone!!!
