Hi
In
case you didn’t hear from Mary Ann Graham Nichols - -
She
and husband Larry moved - They have plans to add an
addition to her son Mark’s home for them. Her email address will
be changing.
Let us know if you need her new address and phone.
I
heard from Cynthia Koch Schenley’s widower Bob. Sounds like he is
still having a rough time. He sent me a picture of Cynthia and one of
him and their twin girls. I think it is Suzanne that is a carbon copy of
Cynthia. Michelle looks a lot like Bob.
Happy
New Year.
Barb

January 28, 2008
Hey there:
This was a very nice luncheon with lots of '58
classmates attending. Sure wish all of you could have been
there. Many comments are made about these luncheons seeming like
mini reunions and we would love it if everyone could attend.
Those dining together today were:
Joan, Raymond, Bull, Leo & Mona, Vesta & Earl, Erma, Jane M.,
Janet, Faye & Jerry, Joe, Owen, Judy, and me.
We had a great time talking and eating....two of
our favorite things!
Erma Wood was there today and tells me that she
will have to have surgery again concerning her stomach. You
will remember she was in the hospital last year in January for the same
thing. She is going to GA to have this surgery done on
February 6 - her oldest daughter lives there. Good luck Erma
and we will have you in our thoughts and prayers.
Today January 24, it's snowing in good ole South
Charleston....sure is beautiful!!!
Try to come to lunch next month. Love
to all, Jake

February 25, 2008
Hello to All:
We sure had a great time Saturday, February
16!!! I've never laughed so hard. I think it's
because the sun was shining brightly. YEA!!!! We
did a lot of talking, shared pictures - mostly of grandchildren,
talked about the reunion, ate and as I said laughed a lot at each
other which is soooo good for the soul.
Those enjoying lunch together were:
Joan Belcher, Mona (Turner) & Leo Mallory, Judy (Bowen) Romano,
Janet (Buckner) George, Faye (Adams) & Jerry Collins, Bull
Miller, Dale Miller, Butch Buckley, Bill Coles, Dolores (Cobb)
Anderson, Jane (Monk) Monday, Vesta (Pauley) & Earl Grinstead,
Joe Bennett and me.
What a "Gang" - we never fail
to have a good time when we are together. We missed the
ones who usually join us. Jo Ann (Spitler) Bostic had to
attend a funeral and Erma (Wood) Harris was in GA after having
surgery and a 10 day hospital stay (let me know if you need an
address to send her a card) and Raymond Barnett who will be in
FL for the whole month of February - poor thing. ha ha.
Try to join us sometime and be sure to plan
to come to our 50th Reunion. We have quite a number who
have sent in their questionnaires and checks. We are
getting excited to see all of you. If you wonder who has told
us they will be at the reunion - check out our webpage at www.schs1958.com
On the website at the top of page one - you
will see 50th Reunion and also next to it Questionnaire.
You can print out the questionnaire and mail it back to us if you've
lost the one we recently sent out. We will keep you
up to date on how the reunion is progressing.
Love to all, Jake (Better known
as Jackie (Frizzell) Pauley)

March 24, 2008
Hey there:
I'm running a little late on posting the lunch report for March.
I've really been busy. We had a great time visiting, eating,
discussing the upcoming reunion, etc.

Love to all, Jake
* I received a call from Mr.
Buckley today who says in answer to his dining with Mona at Sam's - HE
WAS NOT EATING OUT OF THE GARBAGE CAN that he was eating
chicken wings and he didn't want to make a mess so he was LEANING
OVER THE GARBAGE CAN when Mona came along - he says he wants
that defined. Mona showed him where the shrimp was and they
continued on with their luncheon. He says they had shrimp,
pineapples, sausage-egg biscuits sausage biscuits and bagels.
He continued to says that Sams has all kinds of good stuff on Fridays
and he thinks he will start going out there all the time.
ha ha Butch says this is "fashionable dining" at it's
best.
* Hey, maybe we all should give
consideration to our lunches being held there - seems from all reports
that they had a wonderful selection of food available and all you had
to do was browse around from aisle to aisle. Butch says we could call
it the "South Charleston Smorgasbord."
* Barbara Wolfe Harvey writes to tell
me she and Sandy also had lunch at Sam's yesterday (April 25th).
She said it was very good and they both particularly enjoyed the
steak and shrimp and added that all the rest was pretty good too.
She says she was sorry she didn't get to see Mona and Butch
while she was there. :- )

YESTERDAY, MAY 2, I FOUND THIS
MESSAGE ON MY ANSWERING MACHINE FROM BUTCH:
Hey I'm out here at Sam's - it's
Friday. If you'd please tell everyone - on the menu
today, we have mesquite grilled chicken, shrimp cocktail,
bagels and pizza slices. I've had a garbage
can for two reserved, but she didn't show up. I've already
eaten; I'm leaving. Anyhow, that is today's menu here
at Sam's Specialty. Goodbye
I'm still laughing. Jake

Sorry folks - I forget
sometimes that everyone doesn't live here in South
Charleston. Someone asked me: "Where
is this Sam's Restaurant you are talking about and is that
the full name of it?" I figured I'd best
let everyone know what I was talking about.
Sam's Club is one of those
huge discount places that's all over the US - those located close-by
are on Corridor G and Hurricane. At certain times of
the day, they serve samples of the food they sell.
They sell everything - tires, clothing, mattresses,
outdoor things for camping and cookouts, computers, TV's,
etc. You have to have a membership card to go in,
although you can go as a guest with a member. Many
local restaurants buy their food in bulk from them.
That's why the joke about Mona
and Butch having lunch there. They really
just happened to both be shopping at the same time.
:- )

can you
believe this? Phyllis & John Fenwick’s granddaughter,
Isabelle, who is only 3-½ years old can already ski.
That’s nothing says Phyllis – she was skiing when she was 2-½ years
old. Phyllis says, “Isabelle has already come down Salamander
Run which is a 2-½ mile slope at Timberline Ski Resort.”
Isabelle’s parents are Vicki (Fenwick) & Bobby Judy.
(Wow how cool is that – I’m not so sure I’d come down Salamander
myself!!! Maybe she’ll be training for the Olympics soon!)
May 12 2008
Guys and Gals:

We had fun talking and discussing memories about all who plan to
come to the reunion. We truly look forward to seeing
everyone.

Owen, Bill, Faye, Jerry, Carroll, Stanley and me. A
small group, but we still had a wonderful time!!!
We hope to see those of you who can come next month on the June 21 -

Rock Lake Presbyterian Church Pastor Rick McGuire, left, and project manager
Scott Hamilton stand on the site of the former Rock Lake Pool. The church
bought the property in 2006 and recently began work on excavating the land to
build a spot for church gatherings, recreation and offices.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Pastor Rick McGuire remembers 15 years ago when he stood
outside of his Rock Lake Presbyterian Church talking to parishioner Fred Edele.
The two men were talking about the old Rock Lake Pool, which at the time had
reopened in Spring Hill as a miniature golf course across from the church. It
was a piece of land the church very much wanted. Church officials had dreams of
turning the area into a picnic and recreation park for church gatherings. Edele
commented to McGuire that the church would acquire the property someday. They
just had to be patient. "He said if we waited two years, we could get it
for 25 cents on the dollar," McGuire said. "It took a little longer
than that."

They just had to be patient. "He said if we waited two
years, we could get it for 25 cents on the dollar," McGuire said. "It
took a little longer than that."
In 2006, the church bought the facility at an auction for $400,000. For
the past few weeks, the church has been preparing property for a September
opening. The construction has included installation of drainage systems
and flattening out the land for picnic areas. Once complete, it will
become the Rock Lake Community Life Center. So far, the effort has cost
about $100,000 on top of the auction payment. McGuire said the project has
been arduous, but he believes it will be beneficial in the long term. He's been
the church's pastor for 19 years.
If anyone has any extra cash laying around - you
might want to donate to this church effort in memory of all the great fun we had
during our summers spending time at Rock Lake Pool. :- )
"It's very exciting," McGuire said. "Sometimes it's a little
scary, but it's equally more exciting." Rock Lake Pool was a Kanawha
Valley institution from 1942 to 1985. It as built in an old rock quarry
and contained diving boards, three water slides, and trapezes that hung on
platforms high above the water. The 550-foot-long pool was billed as
"the largest and most beautiful pool in the East."
The facility's former owners, brothers Sam and Dave Wilan, shut it down after
facing insurance hikes and competition from city pools. Then in 1993, new
owner Mike Haynes transformed it into the Rock Lake Putt Putt Golf and Games Fun
Center, a year-round family entertainment complex. In addition to golf
courses, the facility had arcade games, batting cages, and laser tag and a
go-kart racetrack. It closed in 2005 and Haynes moved out of the state.

Many of you probably
know John Meadows who sold insurance in SC for many, many years.
Below you will see Jean Anne Bennett's message to me. I have
posted the obituary below for those of you who might be interested.
John lived on my street and his daughter Jackie graduated with my daughter
Scarlett.

Hey boys and girls:
We had a great time on the 20th having
lunch together. We were a little surprised that we had a good
turnout with it being so close to Christmas. The 18 who
attending were: Jo Ann (Spitler) Bostic, Janet (Buckner) George, Mona
(Turner) & Leo Mallory, Phyllis (Rumbaugh) Fenwick, Jane (Monk)
Monday, Dale Miller, Vesta (Pauley) & Earl Grinstead, Faye (Adams) &
Jerry Collins, Raymond Barnett, Joe Bennett, Patsy (Atkins) Carr, Erma
(Wood) Harris, William Smith, Bill Coles and me. Gee, I hope
I didn't forget anyone - I did this from memory and you know how that goes
lately.
Many where dressed in their Christmas finery and
everyone was in a festive mood! As usually, we had a great time
visiting (much like a mini reunion) and we parted ways with our "Merry
Christmas Wishes."
For those who weren't there, we missed you....and we
do hope many of you will try to come in January. Now I'll part
with a very heartfelt
"HAPPY NEW YEARS
TO YOU AND YOURS!!!"
Love to all and you'll hear from me in
2009!!! Jake (Jackie Frizzell Pauley)
PS. Let me take this
opportunity to thank all of you for the cards, phone calls, e-mails during
the Christmas season!!! I loved everyone of them.

Subject: Thank you--and IT'S A BOY!
Jackie:
Could you please post a heartfelt thanks from me to
all of my wonderful classmates who took the time and trouble to send me
sympathy cards and to write me letters after the death of my father? I
had hoped to write everyone a nice handwritten note of thanks individually,
but I have to recognize that it is just not going to happen. I have a
problem with my shoulder, and stretching the arm out to write really hurts it.
The arthritis in my hands is also very painful and makes writing difficult.
So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to all of you for your
thoughtfulness, which meant so much to me at a very difficult time. It
is always nice to be remembered.
And now for some really good news--I have a new
grandson! Young William Nicholas Field was born on 3rd December to my
oldest son Rob and his wife Lisa. He weighed in at 7 lbs. 9 oz.
and is the most beautiful baby imaginable! We get to see him tomorrow.
Mother and baby are both doing very well. We are driving up to Rye
tomorrow morning with our youngest son Justin and our cat Penelope (our fur
baby). We'll pick up our second son Christopher in New York City and
then go on out to Rye to spend Christmas. My daughter Elizabeth is
flying in from London with the new man in her life, Killian, who is Irish, and
Justin's girl friend Jenna is coming from San Francisco, so we'll have three
new people to meet--which is very exciting! Our family seems to be
growing by leaps and bounds. We have rented a house at a ski resort
about an hour from Rye, so after Christmas, most of us are going up there to
ski. Rob and his family will join us there as their schedule permits,
although he will not be able to ski, as he is not fully healed from rupturing
his Achilles tendon last August. That is a great shame, as he loves
skiing better than almost anything else in the world! I don't ski any
more either, so we can hang out together and watch his two older children on
skis. They have a baby nurse, and if Lisa feels up to it, she and the
baby might even come up as well. We'll be gone for a week, and then home
for one day before heading over to the Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, West
Virginia, to spend New Year's. They have a great New Year's package, and
while I have always hated New Year's and usually we never do anything, it was
just too good to pass up!
So had better wrap this up and finish packing and get
to bed. A very Merry Christmas to all, and the Happiest of New Years.
My classmates are the greatest!
Love to all,
Judy (Stewart Field)

Hey there boys and girls:
We had a wonderful time today at lunch.
There were 14 of us: Joan Belcher, Jo Ann Spitler, Vesta & Earl
Grinstead, Raymond Barnett, Dale Miller, Bull Miller, Bill Coles, Joe Bennett,
Faye Collins and son Mike (one good looking fellow), me and YES FOLKS ALL THE
WAY FROM VIRGINIA - BECKY & MAX PADON!!!
We had so much fun visiting and, of course, had a
bite or two. This is a fine group to enjoy part of a day with - they
know the same things we know and also they forget the same things we do.
ha ha
Poor Jerry Collins wasn't able to join us today as
he had a toothache....maybe next month Jerry.
As we got near to leaving (some had already left)
the gal that waited on us ask if we'd like a picture made of the ones of us
who remained. Of course, we'd never pass up an opportunity like
that sooooo we all drug ourselves from the table and staggered through the
hall way trying to make it was up the steps. Some better than others,
but we managed to make it and she took our picture - love her heart a very
nice gal. We'll probably post this picture if we didn't break the
camera. ha ha
Love to all and try to join us next month.

Hey there people:
We enjoyed lunch today with: Joan Belcher,
Phyllis Fenwick, Dale Miller, Raymond Barnett, Bull Miller, Joe Bennett,
Dreama & Roger Vass, Butch Buckley and myself. Unfortunately, Faye
& Jerry Collins weren't able to join us as they had planned....Faye had
food poisoning from dining out on Friday evening.
Joining us at the table next to us from
the class of '68 were: Lindell Bowen (Judy Bowen Romano's sister), Lilly
Woolwine, Vera Pullen and Nancy Taylor who had come to chat with us about our
website and what we did when we met for lunch. They are very
interested in setting up a similar lunch group and website for their class.
We had a great time and enjoyed talking and
eating. Try to come next month when we meet on November 15th.
Love to all, Jake

Obituary:
George Harrop Stewart
George Harrop Stewart died on the 23rd of June 2008, at his residence in
Daytona Beach, Fla. He was 92 years old.
George was born in Cynthiana, Ky., on April 26, 1916, the second of four
children of the Rev. Wirt Culbertson Stewart and Ida Barnett Stewart. His
father was a minister in the Methodist Church, who served in several parishes
in rural Kentucky during George's childhood.
In 1934, George enrolled at Berea College in Berea, Ky. He later
transferred to Union College, in Barbourville, Ky. He played football and
basketball for Union College. He left school in the winter of 1937 to return
home to Catlettsburg, Kentucky, to assist his family during the great Ohio
River flood.
In May 1939, George met his first wife, Louise Thorn, in Catlettsburg. The
two were married in December of that year. In November 1940, their first and
only child, Judith Dawn, was born. Louise died in 1977.
George worked at Union Carbide for his entire 41-year career. He started
work with Union Carbide as an insulator at the leach plant in Catlettsburg,
Ky. In 1942, George moved to Charleston, W.Va., to work in the rubber unit at
the South Charleston plant. In 1972, George transferred to the Union Carbide
Technology Center in South Charleston, to work in the control systems
engineering group. George retired from Union Carbide in 1978.
Over the years, George continued his studies while working full time,
accumulating 168 hours of college credits, and eventually earning his A.B. in
history (with a minor in philosophy) from Morris Harvey College in Charleston.
George served his country during World War II, first as an aviation cadet
in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and then as a Civil Air Patrol pilot and squadron
training officer in the Charleston Squadron.
George was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He was
also a lay speaker in the Methodist Church, and a member of the Phi Alpha
Theta history honor society, and the West Virginia Historical Society.
George loved sports, particularly basketball, football, softball, running,
and golf. He was active late into his 80s, running and playing golf. He was
also an avid flyer, and he loved big band music (his favorite song was
Stardust).
George is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Elizabeth Marshall Risk
(Betty) Stewart; his daughter, Judith Field of Potomac, Md.; his nephew, Paul
D. Moore of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2008,
at the Coronado Community United Methodist Church, in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Condolences may be sent to his wife, Betty Stewart, in care of Forest Lake
Manor, 252 Forest Lake Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL 32119.

Subject: Re: Judy Stewart's father's obit (2)
Dear Jackie,
I was just getting ready to e-mail you my father's obituary, but I see that
Gary Pelfrey beat me to it! We just finished it a few days ago.
Planning his memorial service from a thousand miles away has not been
easy.
First my stepmother, who will be 91 in December and has multiple health
problems, was hospitalized twice. Then I wanted to wait until the worst of the
Florida summer was over, as I do not tolerate heat well. Then just as I
was getting ready to start the planning, my oldest son tore his Achilles
tendon whilst playing tennis last month and will be on crutches for eight
weeks. We wanted to wait until he was off of crutches (and his doctor
was willing to OK travel). But then my stepmother announced a short
while ago that she has to move back to Kentucky on the 28th in order to be in
her new apartment by the 1st of October (our wedding anniversary), so that
meant some major league scrambling! So it has been kind of a difficult
time. But fortunately things seem to be under control now.
We are going down on Friday and will spend the next week visiting a
cousin in Sarasota and then going on down to Marco Island and Sanibel, where
we have never been. But I am blessed in that all three of my sons
(the youngest is the one whom you met at the reunion) will be there. (My
daughter, who lives in London, just got back from a business trip to Hungary
and is inundated with work, so she will unfortunately not be able to come.)
Oh--I have another piece of news--I am going to become a grandmother again in
December! My oldest son and his wife are expecting their third child,
due on the 5th. So we shall have a very special Christmas present this year!
My grandchildren are Virginia, age 5 (who has just started kindergarten), and
Henry John, who will be 4 next month.
Thank you so much for your kind comments about my mother--you have no idea how
much it means to me to hear my classmates talk about her with praise and
affection. She loved teaching--and her students--so much.
It was so good seeing you all at the reunion. Thank you so much, Jackie,
for all you do to keep us all connected via the listserve--I really enjoy
reading all of the postings (in spite of the fact that I have not been very
good at posting myself! I'll have to try to improve). Please keep
us all in your thoughts and prayers.
All the best,
Judy (Stewart Field)

I'm pleased that things seem to be
under control for their family now. Wonderful news that Judy and
Robert will be grandparents again!!! As she says...great Christmas
present. Jake

Local band popular in the 1960s making sweet music again
Mark IV performing two shows this weekend
SOUTH CHARLESTON -- The Mark IV Band acquired a following in the 1960s that
continued for more than two decades.
The band has been back together over the last couple of years with shows
not scheduled nearly every weekend.
Among upcoming performances will be a 7:30 p.m. Friday show at the LaBelle
Theater in South Charleston and another at 6 p.m. Saturday at Coonskin Park,
where the band opens for country music legend Charlie McCoy.
The re-grouped band includes three of the four original members - Mark
Wolford, Lewis Collins, and Don Gibson. All three are graduates of South
Charleston High School.
Completing the current band are Frank McBride, Stephanie Moore and Tony
Wolford, who is Mark's son.
They play a variety show featuring classic country, gospel, bluegrass, rock
from the '50s and '60s, and even an occasional waltz or polka.
Gibson, who plays bass, said the tight-knit group enjoys playing in
family-friendly environments. Spouses go along helping with equipment and
details.
"Everything we do is as a whole," said Gibson, of South
Charleston. "I would call us unique."
Turn back the calendar to the early 1960s.
The original members played clubs and beer joints in the days when liquor
by the drink was illegal. They were the regular band at the old Twin Maples in
St. Albans, where they played until midnight while the audience drank beer and
danced. Then they headed for the private clubs where they played from 1 to 4
a.m. and worried about a raid as the crowd enjoyed hard liquor.
"The worst we ever saw was a fight," said Collins, who plays
guitar. "Now people carry guns."
However, they do recall one incident when a club owner in Oak Hill pulled a
gun on the band when they tried to collect their pay. They reported the matter
to a local police officer who responded, "That guy is crazy."
In the early 1980s, members drifted in different directions and the band
broke up.
Be sure to call the LaBelle Theater to see when they are scheduled.
This is our very own LEWIS COLLINS.

Hey guys and gals:
I wanted to tell you that our classmate, Lewis Collins,
is part of the Mark IV Band which I wrote to you about right before our 50th
reunion. Others in the band who graduated from SCHS are: Don
Gibson ('60) and Mark
Wolford ('59). I
believe it was Lewis who decided to get this band back together....many will
remember that they used to play in the 60's at the Twin Maples in
St. Albans.
Joan Belcher, Faye Collins, Dale Miller and myself from
the class of '58 went to see them play on Friday night August 8th. We
really enjoyed the evening and Lewis plays a mean guitar and also sings
quite well. Don plays bass and sings and Mark their
spokesman also sings. They play country and rock & roll (WHICH WE
REALLY LOVED!!!) Try to catch them at the Summerfest on Friday
night, August 22 when they do a "Tribute to Patsy Cline" from 8:30
pm to 11pm. In September they will resume playing at the LaBelle
on the second and fourth Friday nights. Others we spotted who were at
this performance were: Thurman ('56) & Virginia Cobbs, Jack ('54)
& Barbara Blackwell ('54) DeWess, Phyllis Black ('55) &
Whitey Wehrman, Ann Brumfield ('60) Mallory and John
Edwards ('55) & wife Pat' who now live in FL. They
were in town for her reunion and they have hung around SC so they can attend
the Summerfest with their friends.
The Mark IV opened for Charlie McCoy at Cookskin this
past weekend and will play at the upcoming 2008 Summerfest
Around the SC Mound which runs from today, August 20 until Sunday
August 24. I have heard many say they intend to go to this event.
Try to go support the Mark IV South Charleston fellows as
well as the others in the band. They've put together a nice
group, besides the guitar, base guitar and tambourines - they have a steel
guitar player (Frank McBride), drummer (Mark's son - Tony Wolford) and
singer (Stephanie Moore). They really did give a wonderful
presentation - so go see them for an evening of music and fun.
They announced the Friday night we were there that
beginning in '09 they will be performing at the LaBelle every
Friday night.
Love to all, Jake

Hi Jake
Sorry we missed the Big 50, but my other half is a class of '58 person
also
and her reunion was in Park River, ND and since she won the coin toss
we spent a while in the north country.
We did like the COOL mornings as here (FL) we are
up at 6 AM and temp 80 all ready.
When we got home we made a trip to Tampa and
picked up two Grandkids and
had them for a couple of weeks so it's been a
large summer.
I stay active with Carol in United Methodist Women and
I still work honey bees
with my neighbor - currently we are managing 225 hives. making
money from
bee operation is not much although (B) stings are
sure good for Arthritis.
Well, that's all for now. Just a note to
tell everyone how sorry we were that we did
not make trip to WV, but will for the next
milestone.
Take Care - Prayers, Dave
Great to hear from Dave and can you
imagine trying to handle 225 bee hives. Yikees! Wonder how
many times he's been stung? Jake

That
has to be a motley crew if ever I saw one. When Bull jumped out of the plane
it almost crashed because it wasn’t used to losing that much weight all at
once and shot up 10,000 feet before the pilot could regain control.
When
Bull landed - and this was some time ago - his landing site is now known as
The Grand Canyon.....his parachute was the same size they use to drop tanks
into war zones.
Butch

Of course, as
usual I called Bull to make sure it was alright to post this story.
He said, of course, that he and Buckley always joked with each other.
Then Bull comes back with this
story.....He said yesterday that our classmate, Bob McKee, was to bring Bull
and Butch some homegrown tomatoes. Buckley told Bob to just leave
Bull's tomatoes at his house and he'd get them to him. Bob said,
no thanks he'd take Bull's to his home. Bull says, Bob didn't trust
Buckley to bring his tomatoes to him -- figured Butch wouldn't share - he'd
just eat them all.
Oh these
fellows - they just go on and on. ha ha Jake

Dear Jackie,
I'm so sorry to have missed our 50th reunion, but I'm working as a mental
health consultant for a Dept. of Defense contractor. After a tour of
Germany beginning last April, I'm now at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina.
Please tell Bull Miller I'm now with the 82nd Airborne, just as he was a
zillion years ago.
I want to thank you so much for all you do to keep us informed about the
shenanigans of our classmates. Also, the picture you sent us of
the
18,000 soldiers in World War I, forming a human Statue of Liberty was
amazing! I printed off a good copy for the library here at Ft.
Bragg and
the librarians were thrilled to have it. Thanks, Jake!!
For everything!
Sincerely,
Patti Boll
P.S. Feel free to send out this letter to everyone.
Seeing the photos
at the reunion made me miss them all. What a class!!

USS New York
It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade
Center .
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that
include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360
sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters
and assault craft.
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in
a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it
was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers
treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was
there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center
steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck
stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They
knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'
The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'
Please keep this going so everyone can see what we are made of in this
country

Subject: Surgery--you can post exactly what I have written
I'm recovering very well. I
have pain in my back, but it is not the same pain I had before surgery.
I'm thinking that is a good thing.
The second night after surgery,
filled with pain medication, I was sure that I could not breathe.
I kept telling the nurses and anyone I could lure into my room, but they
said I was fine. I did not believe THAT for one minute.
Feeling very frustrated and
helpless, I decided to call 911. I opened up my trusty cell,
and as the light came on for the cell phone, a light came on in my
brain. Brain said, "Barbara, don't do that.
You are in Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. This will
make national news, you will be embarrassed, your family and friends
will be embarrassed, your classmates that you just saw will be
embarrassed and laughing. PUT THE PHONE DOWN!!!"
I put the phone down, satisfied that
I had made a sensible decision, and fell asleep.
Love to all,
Barbara
PS I love all my cards
BARBARA:
I KNOW I SHOULDN'T LAUGH, BUT RIGHT NOW I'M CRACKING UP.
YOUR CLASSMATES WOULDN'T BE EMBARRASSED, BUT WE ALL PROBABLY ARE
LAUGHING AT WHAT YOU ALMOST DID!!! HMMMMMMMMM....I
CAN JUST SEE THE HEADLINES NOW. HA HA GOOD GIRL.
BET WAYNE WAS PLEASED YOU MADE THAT DECISION TOO.
IF ANYONE NEEDS BARBARA'S HOME ADDRESS -
PLEASE CALL OR WRITE TO ME OR JOAN

Judy
Bowen Romano's daughter, Paula Romano Potter, has been selected as "WV’s
High School Principal of the Year." Isn’t that
wonderful – such an honor!!! I know Paula personally and
she’s a very busy, special gal, beautiful, smart - of course and has
four daughters. Another SC woman, Missy Ruddle was selected as
"WV’s Middle School Principal of the Year."
How’s that for representation from South Charleston? South
Charleston continues to be GREAT!!!
Judy
tells me there will be a black tie affair in Washington, DC, October 2008,
with President Bush honoring Paula and Missy and the others throughout the
USA who have certainly earned their prestigious awards.
I
send Paula and Missy a special congratulations - it's hard for
me to call Paula a woman as she still seems like the little gal that
I watched play in front of my house. She and my son, Scott, and
Phyllis' son, David, were friends and graduated together - say it isn't
so....these boys can't be men either. ha ha
I
know Judy is so very proud of Paula as we all are.
Love
to all, Jake

Bull sent these pictures to Joan
and I (I'm sorry to admit) at least a year ago. We
couldn't get it to size properly so we could post it.
Finally, Joan got an idea that worked out - so here they are:
I think a little lead-in line would
be proper......The Charleston Gazette requested before one
of the military holidays that people send in pictures of those
in their families who had served in one of the military
branches. Bull gathered up all these pictures and
the Gazette published them in their paper.
Bull says, his father,
himself and all of his brothers served in the military
excluding Archie (who failed his Marine physical hearing test
due to having Scarlet Fever when he was young which affected
his hearing) and Dale (because Dale was already married
and had children.)
Bet most of you didn't know that
Bull jumped out of those airplanes as he was an airborne
paratrooper.
A big thank you goes to the
"Miller Men" who served our country proud!!!
Enjoy reading the captions
under the pictures. Don't forget that you can
enlarge the pictures by clicking on the little magnifying
glass with the plus sign (+) and then by putting your
cursor on the picture and clicking your mouse.
Love to all, Jake

CLASSMATES: I RECEIVED THIS EMAIL
FROM JUDY POTEET COLE RIGHT AFTER I SENT OUT THE REUNION REPORT.
UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON A COUPLE OF CALLIGRAPHY COMMISSIONS AND
I'M JUST GETTING A LITTLE TIME TO SEND OUT STORIES I HAVE RECEIVED.
THE STORIES WILL NOT BE IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER - I JUST WANT TO GET THEM
SENT TO YOU AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. SOOOO LOOK FOR THEM TO
FOLLOW ASAP. LOVE TO ALL JAKE
Jackie,
Thank you so much for the synopsis of the reunion. I did have a house
full of pre-wedding guests and was not able to be there. I,
also, often see the faces of the deceased classmates whom I knew well.
They are missed.
Your hope that all members of our class will take good care
and remain healthy is great. It reminded me of my favorite
birthday card that I found and sent to my husband, David.
It read on the front:
"I hope you live to be 200."
And on the inside:
"and I'm the last person you see."
Live long and well, Jackie, and keep all of us in touch with each other.
In a few weeks I will have the joy of being at the wedding of my
oldest granddaughter! Perhaps great-grandchildren are not far
off! Ours is a wonderful generation! And God is and
has been very good to us all.
Blessings and peace, Judy Poteet Cole
CLASSMATES: I WROTE TO JUDY AND ASKED HER IF I
COULD POST HER STORY AND SHE SAID YES. I'M SURE YOU WILL LIKE
GETTING AN UPDATE ON HER AND HER FAMILY. I DO HOPE JUDY GETS TO COME
TO THE NEXT REUNION. JAKE
Jackie,
Yes, it is fine to share with our classmates that I was unable to attend the
reunion due to pre-wedding activities.
My oldest granddaughter, Lauren Bishop, a graduate of NCSU and post-graduate
from Meredity College in Raleigh, NC, majoring in Interior Design, will be
married August 2 to Kyle McKay of Raleigh. Since we live on Lake
Norman near Charlotte, NC, ours is a joyful gathering place for family.
We have hosted a bachelorette party and several other pre-wedding events
here recently.
Upcoming are showers, pre-wedding brunch, rehearsal with dinner following,
the wedding with reception and dinner and dancing following the wedding.
In late July, Kyle McKay and 15 friends and groomsmen will stay with us
for 4 days before the wedding; this will be the bachelor party. Some
of them will return to our house after the wedding and reception, since they
live too far away to drive home that night. So we will continue
hosting through the Sunday. Why would they choose my house for a
bachelor party? My husband, David, has very carefully collected all of
the great lake toys: Jet skis, ski boat, knee boards, water skis, and
other specialty ski boards. We even have a water slide on the dock
large enough for adults.
The rest of our summer will be busy with great joy!
I missed all of you at the reunion!
Love, Judy Poteet Cole
HOW ABOUT THAT ?
HMMMMMMM, MAYBE WE SHOULD ALL PLAN A VACATION AT THEIR "MINI
RESORT." HA HA I KNOW THIS WILL BE A SPECIAL OCCASION
FOR JUDY AND HER FAMILY! HAVE A WONDERFUL AND FUN TIME - WE WILL BE
THINKING ABOUT YOU. LOVE, JAKE

Classmates:
Janet Buckner George informed me today that she had
forgotten to tell us she had heart catherization on December
3, 2008 at CAMC. They put in one stint and might have
to put another in down the line. She said to share this
information with our classmates.
I'm quite happy as I'm sure all of you are that she did so well.
Love to all, Jake
