2004 DECEMBER LUNCH AT RED LOBSTER

December 16, 2004

Classmates:

We had a great time as usual.

Those present were: Joan Belcher, Phyllis Fenwick, Butch Buckley, Bull Miller, Bill Coles, Raymond Barnett,
Jo Ann Bostic,
Judy Romano, Jane Monday, Bonnie Turner, and me - Jackie.

Janet Buckner was suppose to meet us, but her husband had to be taken to the doctor with a stiff neck. We
sure missed you Janet and hope David is better today.

Did you ever see so many with names starting with "J" and "B"? Phyllis and Raymond are really standouts with
their names starting  with "P & R". Now isn't that a brilliant bit of information from me? Keep that in a file
somewhere so you can refer to it when someone  ask you for a tidbit. ha ha

Sorry guys and gals that you couldn't join us - we are soooooooo much fun to be with. Try us again next month.

Love to all Jake

Subject: Lunch

Hi Jake,  Just wanted to let you know we won't be at lunch Saturday.
We are still working on Dinah's house from the flood.

She lives in Happy Valley, right on the Little Kanawha River.
We had so much rain from hurricane Frances.  The ground was
saturated, then Ivan came along one week later and dumped so
much rain on the ground that it couldn't handle it.

Dinah wasn't as lucky as our classmates in Florida. She had 42
inches of water in her house, she lost everything inside.
She had just remodeled her kitchen less than a year ago
and put white carpet in her living room and down the hall.
Now she has to replace all of her bottom cabinets. We had
to cut 48 inches of dry wall out of every room. So we are at her
house every chance we get to help her.

Have fun Saturday. Love Dreama & Roger

NOTE:  to Dinah, Dreama, and Roger - we are so sorry that you have had this misfortune to deal with - hopefully all will be back to normal soon.  We have you in our thoughts and prayers.   Love Jake

I have attached a wonderful article of Judy Bowen Romano's beautiful and intelligent daughter, Paula Romano Potter.
This article was seen in the Metro newspaper last week.  Judy, you did such a good job raising all your children.

Joan

Continued-From Page 1

at the now-closed DuPont, Riverside and South Charleston high schools.

She served as the principal of Hayes Middle School until last February.

The new principal balances work and personal lifestyles that are -' and this may be

egregious understatement hectic.

"I'm the mother of four daughters, ages 8 to 1," she said. "They come with me to a

lot of the Riverside High activities. Anything I do in the evening hours, I' do with my children.

I enjoy spending time with the students, and they enjoy spending time with them, too."

If the principal's plate wasn't full enough with four youngsters at home and more than 1,250 more

at work, Potter is also working on her doctorate in education through the on-line  University of Phoenix. '

Still, she said she treasures  the opportunity to serve as Riverside's principal.

"It's a lot of work," she said, "but it's a rewarding job. It's not about the money.

I don't know anybody who could have a better job than I could have here."

Potter said there are three major goals she has for the school his- year....

"One of the things I've bee doing to trying to add, some more student,

to give students an opportunity to  have club meetings, for instance, in the morning before classes.

There's also free tutoring and test preparation.

"Our goal is to help students feel a greater connection: to the school and be more of a part of it.

"We also want to really raise the bar for academics here at Riverside. The math department, for example,

has a vertical learning program with the middle schools in the area.

"Thirdly, we want to work diligently to improve our graduation rate," she said.

Potter said that parents, fellow administrators and other Riverside area residents

have made her transition into the principal's role an easier one.

"The community in the eastern end of the county has been wonderful to work with. They've been very

supportive and stand behind their sons and daughters."

Potter lives with her husband, Jerry, in South Charleston.

Hi Jackie, Thanks for writing and checking on us. We made it through Jeanne!!! It was
unreal. We had around 20 some hours of wind and rain!!! We did not lose power or our
phones, thank goodness. We had a few minor problems, water coming in. I believe it was
the wind driven rain that finally came in. In all, we were lucky. Hopefully, we have seen
the last of these storms. WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH ALREADY!!!! Hurricane season ends
in the end of Nov. Take care, Laura Jo

Hi Jackie, Thanks for writing and checking on us. This is unreal!!!

We have been very lucky so far with each storm, but Frances was the worse with 12 inches of rain, no power
and then no phones. We had very little damage, thank goodness. This time with Jeanne
we may not be so lucky. We have to prepare the best we can. Hopefully, the winds won't
be as bad as they predict somewhere between 50 and 70 miles a hour wind. We moved
from Texas to get away from the hurricanes there and now this. I must say, it is scary
and upsetting!!! We'll keep you posted. By the way we are in Ocala, 90 miles north of
Orlando and 39 south of Gainsville, near Interstate 75.

Keep us in your prayers.

I wanted to pass along information I have received from those
who have faced the hurricanes. I do hope those of you we
haven't heard from will write soon to let us know you are
doing alright.

Many of our classmates are concerned about you and keep asking
me for a report. Hopefully, all of those effected are settled
and back in your homes. I worry that not hearing from you
might mean you've suffered greatly or loss your homes
completely.

Please let us hear from you. Love to all, Jackie

line before going. It isn't looking to good for
us here in the panhandle so I am going to start
packing as soon as I get back from Church. I have
a feeling we will be evacuating by tomorrow or
Tuesday. Pray for us all. The state of Florida
can't take much more and neither can my nerves.

Love you,

Just wanted you to know that I am safe but the
town of Pensacola is a disastrous area. It is so
pitiful looks like
bombs went off . I had quite a bit of damage to
the house but I can praise God that my whole house
didn't go. So many have lost every thing.

Hello Cuz,

Thanks for your concern. It seems as tho we will
be in the path of the storm, but we are several
hundred miles from the coast and hopefully we
won't get the powerful winds like the people on
the coast. however, we will be in danger from
tornados that are spawned by the storm. I would
rather have the storm itself.
My youngest son lives in Kenner LA., and came up
here to get away from the storm, seems as tho he
may have made a move into its path.
Thanks again

Jack

We are still in Cleveland, but will leave 9/15 and take
several days to get back to Boynton Beach. From all
reports we escaped major damage. There are three trees
down on our street, but no water our wind damage to our
unit. Most of the damage in our community seemed to be
downed trees. The area around us has had some loss of
power, loss of phones, no gasoline and no stores open.
Bob's nephew is arriving from England tomorrow to use
our condo. We called and warned them, but they are
planning to make the trip. Hopefully things will begin
to improve by the weekend, and
of course we are holding our breath about Ivan.

Thanks for your concern.

Those present at the August lunch were: Judy Bowen Romano,
Bull Miller, Carroll Pack and Stanley, and Raymond Barnett.

Bull gave me a message for those of us who missed....they
talked about us like dogs. I knew my ears were burning for
some reason. ha ha

Bull, says they talked about the cruises they had all taken.
Bull has been invited by John Edward's class of 56 to go on a
cruise with them in February. Now that's pretty neat.
Wonder why they didn't ask all of us? Just know Bull will
have a blast and keep everyone entertained.

I sure missed being at lunch, but you know I just had to stay
home with Jerry since he'd just had surgery the day before.
By the way - he is doing wonderful. Has to stay off from
work two weeks and can't drive during that time.....he's stuck
with me.

Unlike with Mary, there will be visitation, service, and a burial that
will be open to family and friends. The arrangements are not certain
yet.

Sorry to be the bearer of sad tidings, but I thought that
you all would want to know.

Greetings Classmates:

I wanted to let you know that Jane Bennett Ferrell's husband
Freddie and their brother Joe planned a Surprise Party for the
twins which was held on Saturday the 8th - their birthday.

Fred and Joe had to really work to keep it a secret because
Joan's husband, Gus, had a birthday the day before. Fred
included a small birthday cake for Gus. As they have done for
years, Fred takes Jane, Joan and Gus to dinner for their
birthdays. So he pulled this off and made a stop by the
church in pretense of saying a quick hello to a fellow for
whom they thought the church was having a party. Boy, where
the three of them SURPRISED!!!!

They invited church members, people they had worked with at
the bank and a few '58 classmates. Fred had me contact
classmates who where close to J & J and who he knew could be
at the party. Longtime Kenna Drive buddies, Jim Garber (&
wife Katherine) traveled down from Dunmore, WV, and Wanda Clay
who was coming from FL to SC to bring a friend home. Since I
knew Max and Becky where planning to visit Max's Mother for
Mother's Day - I also called them. Those who come to the
luncheon regularly where included. Fred and Joe where very
cautious about how they handled things so neither of the three
of them would become luscious.

We had a wonderful time and I'm so happy we could spend part
of this "special day" with Jane and Joan.

Love to all - Jake

Classmates: I received the following message from Max and
wanted to forward to all of you. Jake

Jackie,

Although neither Judy '57 nor Joan Raspillaire '60 were
members of our class, I thought that you might be interested
in posting this information since Mr. Raspillaire played such
a prominent role in school life for so many of us.

Max

Max's friend forwarded the attached note from Judy.

A note from Judy re: Her Mother's passing.

Hi Everyone,

I just want to share with you that Mom passed away this
evening,
at 7:30 p.m. She was in no pain; very peaceful breathing
right up to her
last breath.

We were all there with her; and we know that she is now
in her
heavenly home; seeing Jesus face to face; and reunited with
Daddy.

The local funeral home has her body for now; and then
Snodgrass
Funeral Home from South Charleston will drive over and pick up
her body
sometime tomorrow. Of course, then we will all be leaving for
there.

God bless your day! Love, Judy & Joan

CLASSMATES: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT MRS. RASPILLAIRE
IS BELOW FROM MAX. JAKE

Jackie,

I believe that she was over in Ohio where both Judy and Joan
reside. I don't know whether she was there permanently, or
just since she has been in ill health.

Here is additional information that I just received from
Judy.

Max

*****************************************************

We will have the visitation for Mom on Friday evening, May
7th, from 4:00-8:00 p.m.; at Snodgrass Funeral Home in S.C.

There will be a burial at Graceland Memorial  Cemetery at
10:00a.m. on Saturday, May 8th.----- Then, we will go to the First
Presbyterian Church in S.C. for the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m.

Thanks for passing this on. There may be band members or
other classmates who are interested.

CLASSMATES: I RECEIVED THIS LETTER FROM BOB ROGER'S
DAUGHTER - SHE IS EXPECTING A BABY NEXT MONTH. I WANTED TO
SHARE THE INFORMATION ABOUT BOB WITH ALL OF YOU. JACKIE

Hey, so glad you wrote me. Dad is failing in mind and body,
some days are worse than others though.

My mom (NOTE: this would be Bob's first wife) went to visit
him last Saturday, he didn't even remember that I was
expecting a baby, but made him smile when she said we wanted
to name him Robert. Sometimes he doesn't recognize people,
he comes and goes minute to minute.

Last Sunday, he fell out of bed, they took him to the
hospital but they found nothing injured. His frame of mind
has not been good lately, he is telling everyone goodbye,
see you in glory type of talk. It is so upsetting. Why
does he have to linger in this state? Only the Lord knows
the plan, we just have to live it out.

I spent 4 days in the hospital 18 thru 21, because of some
virus. It hit me and in 12 hours I was so dehydrated and
feverish and everything that they immediately admitted me to
Thomas. After lots of antibiotics and fluids, sticks and
prods, x-rays and everything else, they sent me home. I am
just now getting my strength back. The baby they said is
okay, moving good and strong. I have been sick with so many
colds, the nursing home flues and then this virus, that I
haven't seen much of dad in months. Emotionally it takes it
toll on me. I do wish that his old friends would get to
visit him.
He is dwindling away to nothing......weighing only "131
pounds" now.

Martha's health has gotten alot worse since moving to
Georgia. She was here in January and didn't even call any
of us to come see her when she was visiting dad. They
called her when he fell Sunday, I talked to her Sunday
night, but haven't heard anything else from her.

Anyway........Did you know that "Tank" Mathews" passed away?
He was a very ill man, so many health problems, at least he
isn't suffering anymore. (NOTE: I know a lot of classmates
went to the funeral home.)

Well, I better go, hope you can make it to see Dad soon.

God bless, Brenda

Hey there:
I just wanted to pass this information on about Jane.
Joan wrote to me earlier saying, "Jane is not doing well and
the family hopes the new chemo will work better".
Joan wrote on April 12th - Fred & I took Jane to church and
she got to see all her church family. All of our family went
to Jane & Fred's for Easter. We did all the cooking and Jane
really enjoyed it. She is feeling so much better since the
doctor put her on the pain patch and all the other medication.
She is taking something for her appetite and is eating good
now.
(NOTE FROM JAKE: I have attached a picture of the "Bennett"
family having their Easter supper together. Gus was in the
kitchen and Fred was taking the picture).
Then on the 14th, Joan wrote - Jane is feeling much better.
She is on her chemo pills and if her blood work is good enough
she will start the chemo IV every three weeks.
I ask you to keep all of the family in your prayers and
thoughts.

Love to all, Jackie

Hey guys and gals:

Attached below is a sample of Don's latest drawing...the
Labelle Theater! I think it's a wonderful memory of days
gone by. What details. The first movie shown at the
theater was "One Foot in Heaven" with Frederic March and Don
has put that on the marquee. Check out the Labelle name on
the marquee - it's in 3-D.

Don will be selling these pictures for $10.00 each and the
price includes mailing. They are lettered in black on a
cream colored paper with a linen texture suitable for
framing. What a buy. We are most fortunate that Don is
capturing all of our memories in his drawings.

Just wanted all of you to see the end results and get a
heads up that he will be selling them.

Love to all, Jake

I received this email from Judy Bowen Romano March 16th and
wanted to share it with all of you. Jake

Jackie:

I need to brag a bit. My granddaughters, Jeri Deann (6) &
Audriana (7), competed at Disney World last Saturday and their
group the "River Cities Rebels out of Teays Valley, WV" won
the National Cheerleading Championship. Other groups competing
were from Washington State, California, Kentucky, Georgia,
Florida, North Carolina, etc. They received black satin
jackets that said 2004 National Cheerleading Champions, I am
so very proud of them.

Judy

Note: Well now, that's wonderful news. Tell those little
gals we said Congratulations!!! What a nice win for them and
WV!

March 15, 2004

1 - Just talked with Joan and she will be going down to FL
the end of May to fly back with Jane (Freddie will be
driving back to get the car home). They will come back to
SC for the very hot months. Jane continued to take her
treatments while in FL and is doing pretty good.

I'm sure happy they have been able to spend some time at
their new place in FL.

2 - Becky Huffman received an email from Larry Forth's son
on March 13th and this is what he said:

While surfing the net this morning, I ran across the Zogg
picture that was posted on the SCHS website in 2002. My dad
(Larry Forth) has been gone for twenty years as of last
month, and this picture was very welcome. As a bonus, his
cousin (Doug Forth) is also pictured. Again, thanks for
taking the time to post the picture.

Best Regards,
Larry Forth (Jr.)

NOTE FROM JAKE: Now you see, a lot of people from other
SCHS classes and other schools are checking out our site.
Pretty neat, huh??? Joan and I get mail often where
someone has run across something on our site that they'd
like to know more about or questions they have concerning
their class or about South Charleston.

I will be posting some other news soon. I've been a little
busy with calligraphy commissions and such. Joan has also
been busy - sooooo very soon we will get back into business,
meanwhile, I do hope all of you are well and happy.

If you have news I such post, please email me.

Love to all Jake

Hey there guys and gals:

Bet you didn't know that Owen Higgins has built a car wash
on Chestnut Street in Spring Hill...right next to the
railroad track and very close to Jackson Street Playground.

You simply must go to get your cars washed, but while
you're at it check out the beautiful building. It looks
like a magnificent house. The color (in the beige
family) is wonderful with green letters on the building.
"Chessie Auto Wash Depot"

I know Owen and his family must be very proud of this
building and it's business since Owen designed the
building and he and his sons did a great deal of the work
themselves.

Congratulations, Owen. We are proud of you and wish you
good luck in the new business.

Love ya - Jake

This is a good one to forward on to all of you. Hope you
have a great day. Love Jake

Morning,

Had planned on coming to the luncheon, but my daughter
went into labor early Saturday morning and I stayed home and paced the
floor until 7:19 pm when she safely delivered a healthy 8 lb 12 oz baby
boy. I'm leaving Sunday to go to Plymouth so that I can bond with my new
grandson. Will be off work all next week.

Take care

Love ya,

Sal

Hey there Classmates:

Lunch at our new Red Lobster proved to be quite a success.
If you live close by and haven't had time to go to the new
Red Lobster - you should go. The decor is quite nice and
impressive and the food was scrumptious. They were able to
accommodate us much in the same fashion that we usually have
at Applebee's. I believe everyone enjoyed the change
suggested by Jane Ferrell. (This seems like a good time to
tell you that Jane is in wonderful spirits and still has
that sweet smile on her face. She was feeling well and
able to eat. She has lost her hair again, but jokes about
it and wears her little ball cap. This gal has a lot of
spunk!)

Those attending were: Jane Bennett Ferrell, Joan Bennett
Belcher, Butch Buckley, Bull Miller, Raymond Barnett,
Delores Cobb Anderson, Jo Ann Spitler, Jo Anne Berkley

Scarbro, Jim and Elinor ('59) O'Dell (came from Beckley) and
me.

As usual, we left around 1:30. Plan to join us next month
and we'll keep you posted as to where we will meet.

Love to all, Jake
