SCHS CLASS OF 1958

OLD NEWS 2009
December 15, 2009
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Walker Machinery Co. plans to sell its mining equipment business to a Louisville, Ky., holding company that owns one of the nation's oldest and largest Caterpillar dealerships.
Walker has signed a "letter of intent" to sell the 59-year-old family-run business to Boyd Co., which owns Whayne Supply Co.
"It's not been finalized," said Breese Watson, marketing manager at Whayne Supply. "At this point, it's a letter of intent, and the two
Walker has signed a "letter of intent" to sell the 59-year-old family-run business to Boyd Co., which owns Whayne Supply Co.
"It's not been finalized," said Breese Watson, marketing manager at Whayne Supply. "At this point, it's a letter of intent, and the two management teams will be going through due diligence."
The deal is expected to close by early next year
Boyd plans to operate the Belle-based company under the Walker Machinery name after the sale and during the "near future," Watson said.
"Walker Machinery is another successful Caterpillar dealer, and [Boyd] felt there would be good synergies between the two companies. They're in the business, and we're in the business."
Watson declined to discuss whether the sale would prompt any personnel or operation changes at Walker, saying Boyd would issue a release after the sale.
Walker employees were notified Monday about the sale in an e-mail message. The company has 700 workers in nine locations in West Virginia and southern Ohio.
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said Monday that Walker Machinery has been a "great corporate citizen." Carper said he hoped that Boyd would "follow in the footsteps chartered by the Walker family."
"Like many other situations, all too often we as a community vastly under appreciate the significant contribution and importance of family-owned and locally controlled businesses the size of Walker Machinery," Carper said. "Their employees were well treated with significant benefits, and the economic impact will reach far beyond Kanawha County."
In June, Walker eliminated 45 jobs amid a decline in coal production across the state. About half of the workers were full-time shop and parts department employees, the rest summer contract laborers and interns.
Another 23 Walker workers lost their jobs in September.
Company officials have said that stricter federal regulations of the coal industry could hurt company sales and force additional layoffs. About three quarters of Walker's sales are tied to coal.
Throughout the year, Walker Machinery has slashed capital expenditures and charitable contributions, and eliminated employee overtime to reduce costs.
Walker's employees make about $60,000 a year on average, company officials said recently.
Steve Roberts, executive director of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, said he looks forward to finding out more about Walker Machinery's potential buyer.
"I hope they will have a market to sell to, which at this point is a substantial concern," said Roberts, referring to uncertainty in the coal industry amid recent federal court rulings and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's decision to review mountaintop removal permits.
Walker Machinery was founded in 1950, after Cecil I. Walker and R.D. "Dusty" Rhodes -- then owners of Rhodes-Walker Chevrolet in South Charleston -- purchased the former Baldwin Machinery Co.
The company's business took off in the early 1950s with the start of construction of the West Virginia turnpike and interstate system. In 1958, Walker became the company's sole owner.
Stephen Walker, Cecil Walker's son, joined the company in 1971, serving initially in the sales department. He was named president in 1978. He could not be reached for comment Monday, and other company executives referred questions to him.
"The Walkers have been great assets to this community," Roberts said. "They've contributed so much in so many ways in terms of high-paying jobs and generous gifts to the community."
Walker Machinery's earthmoving division sells Caterpillar equipment in 25 West Virginia counties and eight southeastern Ohio counties. The heavy equipment is used in the coal, construction and forestry industries.
Walker's engine power division provides commercial truck and engine sales and repairs. The company also has a division called "Walker Express" that rents heavy equipment.
Whayne Supply, which was founded in 1913, has more than 1,300 workers. The privately held company operates 15 facilities in 12 cities in Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Whayne Supply merged with the Boyd Co. in late 2008. In February, Whayne opened its newest branch office in Bowling Green, Ky.

My daughter Suzi took me to the doctor, who was very nice. As I expected learned nothing. I will be going back in 3-4 weeks for a couple of days for tests but even he didn’t sound very optimistic as to cause and treatment of the bleeding. He said in 50-60% of the cases it is a spontaneous bleeding and other than blood thinners (which I don’t take) there are usually no drug or food causes. If I start bleeding again, he wants me there ASAP. Other than being exhausted from the trip, I’m doing well.

Today I went in for a hemoglobin test and have held my own. Will do again on Tuesday and get another infusion of venofer.
The medical assistant to my doctor called today. The Medical College of VA doc wants more info – so she hoped to get through my chart this afternoon and get the info he wanted. He will review the additional info. It will probably be next week before we hear if they can do the procedure my doc suggested or if they may have to do something else. Her gut feeling was it may be a couple of weeks before anything gets done.
Needless to say, I was a little discouraged. However I did receive some more cards from our classmates that cheered me.

It was only a two-hour trip up Interstate 79, but for Nitro it must have felt like a stop at the state baseball tournament. The Wildcats sure played like it.
It was three up and three down - all by shutout - for Nitro over the weekend at the McDonald's Powerhouse Invitational at the Sue Morris Sports Complex in Glenville.
The Wildcats blanked Jefferson 7-0, Bridgeport 3-0 and Martinsburg 10-0, which sort of resembled Nitro's romp through the state tournament last season when it beat Martinsburg and Fairmont Senior by matching 10-0 scores to capture its first title.
And the kicker? The Wildcats (17-3) didn't even throw their ace, junior J.R. Bradley, this weekend.
"I don't think there's any question we're one of the top teams in the state,'' said Nitro coach Steve Pritchard, "and we're one of the title contenders. We've got four pitchers. J.R. probably has the brightest future as a pitcher, but this weekend all of them threw lights-out.''
Brett Kemerer fired a five-hitter against Jefferson, Tyler Roberts a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts against Bridgeport and Andrew Pickering a five-inning one-hitter against Martinsburg. All three of those teams are included in the top 10 of the Gazette's Class AAA state rankings. (All six teams in the weekend Powerhouse field were ranked.)
"Kemerer has been our most consistent pitcher,'' Pritchard said. "Roberts shut down a really good Bridgeport team, and Pickering really had good stuff [Saturday].''
Because Kanawha County schools took spring break early this year, Nitro couldn't make its traditional trip to Myrtle Beach to play good competition and help the players bond. Pritchard thinks the trip to Glenville may have done the trick.

Because Kanawha County schools took spring break early this year, Nitro couldn't make its traditional trip to Myrtle Beach to play good competition and help the players bond. Pritchard thinks the trip to Glenville may have done the trick.
"That's what coach [Dave] Sneed and I were talking about,'' Pritchard said. "It was just two days - three games in 24 hours - but it seemed like the night our kids spent together did maybe have them come closer together as a team. We took care of business. We didn't get any phone calls or stay up late. I stayed in the room right beside them.
"One thing that's happened is that Matt Frazer has become the sheriff of this team. He's really taken control of them and done an outstanding job. If someone does something good or messes up, he gets to them before I get to them. He's held the guys accountable. To have a quality team, that's what it takes. If they take care of the problems on the field before it gets to me, for a coach, that's what you want. The last two weeks have been unbelievable.''
Frazer, considered one of the top hitting prospects in the state, hit a home run in each of the three games in Glenville - a pair of three-run shots and a two-run blast.
"Even his outs were hard outs,'' Pritchard said. "It was just impressive. When he came to bat, everybody stopped around the complex and watched what he was doing.''
Pritchard hopes his team can keep the momentum going this week as it attempts to defend its title in the Mountain State Athletic Conference tournament.
"I don't want to sound negative to our kids, but it's been kind of what kids do we get to show up,'' Pritchard said. "But even for the game at 10 in the morning [at Glenville], they were ready to play. I don't know what it was.''
Cabell Midland, like Nitro a member of the MSAC, also fared well in the weekend Powerhouse, winning all three of its games and allowing just one run in the process - beating Martinsburg 9-0, Bridgeport 4-0 and Fairmont Senior 4-1. The Knights take over the top spot in the AAA rankings.

Hi Jackie!
Thanks for the photo...it is so cute. Her little dog looks like Joan, Gus and my little dog..."Gizmo." He thinks he owns Joan and Gus too, and he does!Anyway, Larry, me and our neighbor, Alice Eary who lived across the hall from us and owned Gizmo (she died in 2001- I think) were at Mt. Dora in 2000 and visited Cathy Campbell Beach (who used to live next door in the apartment my youngest son lives in now. she is Barbara's cousin) (NOTE: Larry and Sherry became the owners of Gismo when Alice died.)We visited the darling little shop and saw Barbara and her husband at that time. It is a small world, for sure! Mt. Dora is a lovely little "quaint" town, with "little hills"...not like the "flat" Florida you think of, but guess you know that since you've been there too. Alice stayed with Cathy and Larry & I stayed in a motel nearby...didn't know Barbara and her husband owned "suites" there...but maybe they didn't at that time????
Thank you for the "recall of a good memory" for me today.

Jackie: (Joan wrote the lunch report this month since I couldn't attend - nice job. Maybe she'd like to do this each month???? ha ha Thanks Joan !- Love ya, Jake )Lunch was very special with our wonderful classmate, Helen Rollins Warren and her sister, Barbara Rollins Jones, visiting. I ask Barbara if she graduated with my brother, George (1953) and she said yes. It was nice to meet Barbara and we enjoyed Helen reminiscing about her South Charleston days and how she had forgotten where everything was. She was glad her sister was with her because she said she would have never found the Club. (note from Jake: I noticed in our 2003 Alumni Directory that Barbara is Dr. Barbara Jones who is Assistant State Superintendent of WV Department of Education.)I ask Barbara and Helen if they remembered Larry Combs and, of course, they did. Helen was in the Band with Larry and recalled some of the special times they had on the band trips and, of course, Throcky was always in the conversation. I took my three CD's that I had ordered that Larry had recorded so they could see them and told them how wonderful Larry was at the concert that we had attended. The Club was serving a buffet lunch since there were so many people attending several functions that day and after two hours we finally left the Club around 1:00. (An added note by Jake was it was Phyllis Rumbaugh Fenwick's parents (Ed & Ruby Rumbaugh) 70 th Anniversary and they were having a Surprise Party for them at 6 PM. Congratulations to the Rumbaughs! If you'd like to send them a late card let us know and we will supply you with their home address.)Those who attended were: Joe Bennett, Dale Miller, Jane Monday, Helen Rollins Warren, Barbara Rollins, Raymond Barnett, Carl & Carolyn Lloyd Ward and Joan Belcher. Bull came but could not find a parking place and left. Gus told me there was more parking on the other side of the swimming pool, but I'm not sure everyone knows it. (note from Jake: sure glad we have that information for future use - tell Gus thank you from all of us!!!) The Club was having a golf outing of about forty people and also a Little League baseball get together for all the leagues in Kanawha County.Love, JoanPS Don't forget to click on the attached pictures Joan took at lunch. I'm sure happy everyone had a good time and sorry I missed it. Plan now for next month's lunch on May 16th! Jake

The South Charleston Museum foundation is conducting a
fund raising campaign our goal is to preserve
history, collect artifacts, educate the public and keep our
history alive. The History book that we all worked on is
a great resource for our research as we have three displays
that will be accomplished in the next three years.
The first a display of the Belgian glassworker's that is being
built by Stan Bumgardner who is doing all the cultural center
displays. It will be complete with an audio
presentation; the second will be the influence of the chemical
industry on the Kanawha Valley and the third the founding
businesses of our area ( this is where our history book is so
valuable.)
If any of our classmates would like to contribute any amount
it will be very much appreciated. I am presently
volunteering 3-4 hours per day for the museum as I love
history..maybe that is because I feel a part of it..being a
senior citizen.
Contributions may be mailed to The South Charleston Museum
foundation,

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginians no longer will have to cross state lines to buy a six-pack of Yuengling beer.
Next month, the company will be making the popular Pennsylvania beer available for sale throughout the Mountain State, company officials said Monday.
Yuengling could start showing up in retail stores and bars late next week, but most likely some time in April. The Pottsville, Pa.-based brewery was completing contracts with distributors and the state Alcohol Beverage Control Administration this week.
"The people of West Virginia have been very patient, and we're very thankful for that," said Yuengling Chief Operating Officer David Casinelli. "It's going to be one of our best openings ever. We're very excited."
Yuengling, the nation's oldest brewery, sells beer in 12 states and Washington, D.C. The company last expanded sales in Georgia in October.
Anheuser-Busch wholesalers will distribute Yuengling - pronounced "ying-ling" - in West Virginia, Casinelli said.
"Our goal was to have our products out there to take advantage of the summer selling season," he said. "So far, everyone has been cooperative and willing to work with us."
For years, West Virginia beer aficionados have traveled to stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia to purchase Yuengling. The beer is especially popular in the Northern Panhandle and Morgantown area, which includes Pennsylvania residents who attend West Virginia University.
The company has waited until now to move into the West Virginia market, Casinelli said, to make sure there was a sufficient customer demand and adequate distribution network statewide.
"We have a lot of loyal consumers who have gone through crazy hoops to get their Yuengling," Casinelli said. "We're still very much a regional brand."
Yuengling expects its flagship brand, Yuengling Lager, to become its best seller in West Virginia, as it is in other states.
Depending on demand, the brewer also will make available its other beers: Premium, Light Lager, Premium Light, Original Black & Tan, Porter and Lord Chesterfield Ale.
Established in 1828, Yuengling now produces 1.2 million barrels of beer a year, making it the sixth-largest commercial brewer in the U.S. In addition to its Pottsville plant, Yuengling has a brewery in Tampa, Fla.
Casinelli said recent West Virginia legislation to raise the maximum permissible alcohol level for beer sold in the state had nothing to do with the company's decision to start selling in West Virginia.
The bill would raise the legal alcohol limit for beer from 6 percent to 12 percent.
All Yuengling beers have lower than 6 percent alcohol content, with Lord Chesterfield Ale the highest at 5.4 percent.
"We don't have any of that high-octane stuff," Casinelli said.
He said the economic downturn hasn't hurt Yuengling's sales, which increased 7 percent last year.
"I don't think anything's recession-proof," he said. "But we've held up pretty well."

For Immediate Release
Mount Dora featured in book, The Great Towns of America
MOUNT DORA – The Great Towns of America, a 624-page book by David and Joan Vokac published and released in January 2009, features a full chapter highlighting Mount Dora. The book is a detailed vacation and relocation guide to the nation’s top 100 destinations, according to the authors.
“Mount Dora is the prettiest inland village of Florida,” Vokac writes in the book. “Palms and towering moss-draped hardwoods shade waterfront parks and line streets where tidy, whitewashed homes surrounded by manicured gardens are reminiscent of Victorian New England. The flowery little business district fills historic and contemporary buildings with distinctive specialty and antique shops, galleries, restaurants and quaint inns,” Vokac writes.
Chapters detailing each of the top 100 American towns from Bar Harbor, Maine to Palm Desert, California and everything in between, feature descriptions of the towns, their restaurants, attractions, lodging options and provide unique weather and livability ratings. The authors traveled to each destination and reviewed all their key points of interest and attractions, focusing on smaller cities (with populations less than 80,000) located in spectacular settings – on mountains, lakes, oceans or on varied terrain. Additional criteria includes that the cities offer manmade attractions, restaurants and lodgings that enhance their charm and usability in a way appealing to the traveling public.
Mount Dora has earned many accolades over the years such as “Best antique shopping in the South,” by Southern Living Magazine, “Friendliest small town in Florida,” by Florida Monthly Magazine, and “One of the best places in the country to retire,” by Money Magazine. Also, according to authors Pamela Acheson and Richard Meyer, Mount Dora is “One of the best romantic escapes in Florida.”
Other Florida cities featured in The Great Towns of America include Key West, Naples, St. Augustine and Vero Beach.
The book currently sells for $23.95 and is available at most book stores or online, www.amazon.com.
