Walker Machinery to be sold to Louisville company
Stephen Walker, Cecil Walker's son, joined the company in 1971, serving initially in the sales department. He was named president in 1978.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Walker Machinery Co. plans to sell its mining equipment business to a Louisville, Ky., holding company that owns one of the nation's oldest and largest Caterpillar dealerships.

Walker has signed a "letter of intent" to sell the 59-year-old family-run business to Boyd Co., which owns Whayne Supply Co.

"It's not been finalized," said Breese Watson, marketing manager at Whayne Supply. "At this point, it's a letter of intent, and the two

Walker has signed a "letter of intent" to sell the 59-year-old family-run business to Boyd Co., which owns Whayne Supply Co.

"It's not been finalized," said Breese Watson, marketing manager at Whayne Supply. "At this point, it's a letter of intent, and the two management teams will be going through due diligence."

The deal is expected to close by early next year

Boyd plans to operate the Belle-based company under the Walker Machinery name after the sale and during the "near future," Watson said.

"Walker Machinery is another successful Caterpillar dealer, and [Boyd] felt there would be good synergies between the two companies. They're in the business, and we're in the business."

Watson declined to discuss whether the sale would prompt any personnel or operation changes at Walker, saying Boyd would issue a release after the sale.

Walker employees were notified Monday about the sale in an e-mail message. The company has 700 workers in nine locations in West Virginia and southern Ohio.

Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said Monday that Walker Machinery has been a "great corporate citizen." Carper said he hoped that Boyd would "follow in the footsteps chartered by the Walker family."

"Like many other situations, all too often we as a community vastly under appreciate the significant contribution and importance of family-owned and locally controlled businesses the size of Walker Machinery," Carper said. "Their employees were well treated with significant benefits, and the economic impact will reach far beyond Kanawha County."

In June, Walker eliminated 45 jobs amid a decline in coal production across the state. About half of the workers were full-time shop and parts department employees, the rest summer contract laborers and interns.

Another 23 Walker workers lost their jobs in September.

Company officials have said that stricter federal regulations of the coal industry could hurt company sales and force additional layoffs. About three quarters of Walker's sales are tied to coal.

Throughout the year, Walker Machinery has slashed capital expenditures and charitable contributions, and eliminated employee overtime to reduce costs.

Walker's employees make about $60,000 a year on average, company officials said recently.

Steve Roberts, executive director of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, said he looks forward to finding out more about Walker Machinery's potential buyer.

"I hope they will have a market to sell to, which at this point is a substantial concern," said Roberts, referring to uncertainty in the coal industry amid recent federal court rulings and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's decision to review mountaintop removal permits.

Walker Machinery was founded in 1950, after Cecil I. Walker and R.D. "Dusty" Rhodes -- then owners of Rhodes-Walker Chevrolet in South Charleston -- purchased the former Baldwin Machinery Co.

The company's business took off in the early 1950s with the start of construction of the West Virginia turnpike and interstate system. In 1958, Walker became the company's sole owner.

Stephen Walker, Cecil Walker's son, joined the company in 1971, serving initially in the sales department. He was named president in 1978. He could not be reached for comment Monday, and other company executives referred questions to him.

"The Walkers have been great assets to this community," Roberts said. "They've contributed so much in so many ways in terms of high-paying jobs and generous gifts to the community."

Walker Machinery's earthmoving division sells Caterpillar equipment in 25 West Virginia counties and eight southeastern Ohio counties. The heavy equipment is used in the coal, construction and forestry industries.

Walker's engine power division provides commercial truck and engine sales and repairs. The company also has a division called "Walker Express" that rents heavy equipment.

Whayne Supply, which was founded in 1913, has more than 1,300 workers. The privately held company operates 15 facilities in 12 cities in Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Whayne Supply merged with the Boyd Co. in late 2008. In February, Whayne opened its newest branch office in Bowling Green, Ky.

Folks....received this message from Georgeanne Underwood (Duck's wife)

"Duck Underwood and Bob Bird went to play golf yesterday in those high winds the attached picture tells you what happened.  A tree fell on their cart knocked both of them down but the trunk of the tree got Bob and the branches got Duck.  Bob is in CAMC with 3 broken vertabraes and 3 broken ribs, and a small hole in his lungs.  Duck is brused and stoved up but he is ok.  If it had been a few seconds longer they would have been in that cart.
Thought you would want to know.

His partner, Bob Bird is still in Charleston General Hospital

If you can get these photos, you'll see how much more serious this could have been

Hi Guys!!
Here's the latest bad news... : (

Our soon to be, new Club President, Mike Hardman.  (I don't know which club he's referring to.)  had a mishap in his living room Friday night.  Hey guys, this is a very good reason, to not rearrange furniture.

Mike tells me after moving furniture around in their living room, sometime during the day Friday. That Friday night, while getting ready for bed, he turned off the lights in the living room and walked across the room, stumbled over the coffee table, planting his face in one of Janet's potted plants.  He also, fractured his upper right arm, and dislocated his right shoulder.   As you can imagine, Mike received a ride to St. Luke's Hospital, where the Doctor's and Nurse's, were eventually able, to piece him back together.  Janet is now gonna have to nurse him back to health - no small task.  ; )  So, he can get back to work at the Shell station.  : )

Since, Mike's PT Cruiser is dirty, he was looking for someone, to come over, and wash it for him, since he's got a broken arm... ; )  If anyone has the time, and would like to volunteer, just give Mike a call... 419-874-3852.

It might take a while, for him to answer the phone, because I think he's probably, taking some Good Pain Med's, right now.  Although, he might enjoy a sympathy card... If he can talk Janet into opening it for him. ; )

Another option, is to keep the two of them, in your thoughts and prayer's, as Mike is not sure, how long his recovery, may take.

HEY MIKE-

SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR ACCIDENT.  HOPE YOU ARE UP AND AROUND SOON.   IF I LIVED CLOSE ENOUGH,  I'D SURE WASH YOUR CAR FOR YOU!!!

NOW JUST TRY TO BE GOOD AND MIND JANET.

LOVE YA, JAKE

Hey classmates:

We had a wonderful lunch together yesterday.   I was especially happy that I was able to join everyone, although I spend a good deal of the evening resting in bed.

Those attending were:  me, Joan Belcher, Mona & Leo Mallory, Vesta & Earl Grinstead, Faye & Jerry Collins, Bull Miller, William Smith, Erma Wood Harris, Joe Bennett, Phyllis Fenwick, Patsy Atkins, Helen Rollins Warren (KY) and Bill Price (GA).  We were very excited to see Helen and Bill - they both looked great.  Bill was in town to go to the Marshall University game.  Helen was in town to help her sister who just had her knee replaced.

Another note is the class of '59 also came to Applebee's a little later than we did and we visited with many of them.  We decided they looked so much older than our classmates.  Oh sure......ha ha

We sure missed those who usually get to come.  It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time.

We had a lovely time Saturday for our monthly luncheon at Applebee's.  Those who attended were, me, Judy Bowen, Jane Monk Monday, Faye and Jerry Collins, Vesta & Earl Grinstead, Dale Miller, Bill Coles  and Joe Bennett.

Jackie Pauley just got out of the hospital after a week.  She had pneumonia and shingles (very bad case)  on her face and she is still in a lot of pain.  Bull didn't make it since he is having knee problems.  Sure hope everyone starts feeling better.

Louise was Sunday School teacher to and in choir with many of our classmates at First UM Church and is the mother of our classmate Larry Jackson.    She had a stroke while attending Young at Hearts at church -- with 3 doctors present – all OB-GYN.  Anyway she has been taken from Thomas Hospital to Valley Center Room 206, 1000 Lincoln Drive, South Charleston, WV 25309.  My daughter said it was suggested people send her cards to cheer her up.

I thought it would be nice if you could post it to list so all who knew her could send cards if they desired.

Thanks Barb

My daughter Suzi took me to the doctor, who was very nice.  As I expected learned nothing.  I will be going back in 3-4 weeks for a couple of days for tests but even he didn’t sound very optimistic as to cause and treatment of the bleeding.  He said in 50-60% of the cases it is a spontaneous bleeding and other than blood thinners (which I don’t take) there are usually no drug or food causes.  If I start bleeding again, he wants me there ASAP.  Other than being exhausted from the trip, I’m doing well.

Subject: Heart Cath

Hi there,
I just got out of the hospital yesterday.  I went in for a heart cath and they found two arteries that were blocked 90% so they had to put two stints in. Naturally with me things never run smooth, my kidneys weren't functioning 100% so I had to take about 5 bags of fluids. I am just thankful that they had stints small enough to fit me this time.  But I  am home and doing well, just hope this isn't going to be an every two or three year thing.

South Charleston Museum Foundation to premiere

New Exhibit on The Belgian Glassworkers of South Charleston Saturday, September 12th, 5 PM at                     The New Interpretative Center

[ Charleston , WV August 24, 2009]  On Saturday, September 12 at 5 PM, The South Charleston Museum Foundation will sponsor the opening of its new exhibit, “Belgian Glassworkers and the Founding of South Charleston, 1907-1928. The exhibit is placed in the South Charleston Interpretive Center , 313 D Street , next to The La Belle Theater. There is no admission charge.

At 3 PM, at The LaBelle Theater, there will be a presentation of a new travelogue about Belgium . Following the opening of the exhibit at 5 PM at The Interpretive Center, there will be a reception and short program back at The LaBelle Theater. Dr. Fred Barkey, SCMF board member and author of the monograph, “Cinder Heads in the Hills – The Belgian Window Glass Workers of West Virginia,”(1988) Stan Bumgardner, the exhibit designer, and Peggy Collard Thompson, also a SCMF board member and Belgian descendent, will speak.

More about The South Charleston Museum and local Belgian History

The South Charleston Museum Foundation board has been working since 1997 to create an exhibit about the Belgian glassworkers who came to South Charleston in 1907 to build two glass plants named Banner and Dunkirk .  In June 2008, SCMF sponsored a night celebrating the descendents of the Belgian glassworkers, giving them certificates and celebrating with Belgian food. Dr. Fred Barkey gave his slide show on the glassworkers and a recent Belgian travelogue was shown. Peggy Collard Thompson created a combination Belgian cookbook and genealogy listing the names of local Belgian families.  In March 2009, the SCMF board commissioned Stan Bumgardner to design the exhibit for the new Interpretive Center , next door to The La Belle Theater.

The South Charleston Museum Foundation Board hopes that the many people of Belgian descent from around the Kanawha Valley and state will visit the exhibit. The Board also hopes that anyone interested in local history will visit the exhibit. It is the only exhibit in the world to celebrate the hard work and lives of the Belgian craftsmen who created the hand-made window glass that was used all over the world until machines replaced them in the 1920s.

Statement written by Stan Bumgardner, exhibit designer

Belgian Glassworkers and the Founding of South Charleston : 1907-28 depicts the re-created interior of the Banner Window Glass factory, the entrance to which once stood on the site of the present-day Rite Aid across from the mound. The displays bring to life the story of the Belgian immigrants who moved from Indiana to South Charleston in 1907 to make flat glass. The exhibit incorporates theatrical lighting and audio to explain the time-honored tradition of handmade glassmaking, which the Belgians handed down from generation to generation.   The Banner plant and another South Charleston factory, Dunkirk , closed after the arrival in Kanawha City of Libbey-Owens (later Libbey-Owens-Ford), which produced machine-made flat glass. However, many of the Belgians remained in South Charleston , and some of their descendants still live in the Kanawha Valley today. This exhibit pays tribute to the lasting legacies of these Belgians, who helped found the city of South Charleston

Alright classmates:

It's time for lunch again on July 18 at 11am at Applebee's on Corridor G.  We do hope many of you will plan to attend.   We had so much fun last in June.  We have decided to return to Applebee's again this month as everyone seemed to enjoy going there.  Parking is terrible at LCCC during the summer when the golfers are there.

Unfortunately last month we had two fellows show up at LCCC to have lunch and they told them we had cancelled lunch.   Our apologies to Delbert Kidd and Billy Meadows.   I always (1) notify those who usually come to lunch and don't have email and (2) send out the email reminder to those who do have computers - otherwise it's a tossup as to who might show up.  LCCC knew why we were going elsewhere for a few months.   Hopefully Delbert and Billy will try to join us this month.

On a good note, I have heard from Barbara Webb Pritt.  She and Wayne will be in town and plan to attend the luncheon.  So "come on down" so you can have a visit with Barb, Wayne and the rest of us!

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE THERE THIS MONTH SO I CAN HAVE AN IDEA HOW MANY THEY SHOULD SET UP FOR...THANKS.

We look forward to seeing everyone!  Love to all, Jake

Union Carbide Summer Camps
"Hiking in Appalachia!"
2009 Reunion of Former Campers

Last reminder before the 2009 Reunion! We're ready to reminisce with a reception at Bear's Den and a visit to the Blue Creek sites of Camelot and Carlisle...we'll do some "Hiking in Appalachia" -- really.

We're aware of more changes that have altered the Blue Creek landscape. Timber operations continue on the Creek, moving "our stuff" around. It's hard to see the faint evidence of "our" special places disappearing, but for well over 100 years, timber, oil and gas have been an important export from the Creek. And, we probably moved earlier residents' stuff around when the camps were built and operated.

Scott Mease inspired me to read St. Exupery's "The Little Prince" a few years ago. I am reminded of the passage, "The eyes are blind; you have to look with the heart." Come and join us as we visit once again those "...congenial spots, for happily ever aftering..." that are taking their proper places in the Arthurian legend.

Your reunion committee plans to search for a good place to mount a plaque as a reminder of "our time" on the Creek. We'll plan to start from the Hunting and Fishing Lodge about 1 PM on Saturday. We're open to ideas!

Click here! for the schedule, maps and directions! (Use the link below if the clicker doesn't work for you.) It all starts on July 31.

Jackie, I moved to Findlay, Ohio, in 1966.  My husband worked for Whirlpool Corp. here.  I lost my husband, Herman Pritchard, Dec. 22, 2004.  Herman was a 1956 alumni of SCHS.  Last year I lost one leg in Feb. and the other one in May.  I am very grateful to be here because I have a very bad heart.  I had 5bypass surgery in 2001.  If I get to come to SC again, I will email to see if anything is going on.  Are they going to issue a new alumni book any time soon? We're getting smaller in numbers, but we're still a special class.  Love ya, too.

Hey there boys and girls:

Barbara Wolfe Harvey has asked me to forward this message to all of you.

Thank you to Jackie for keeping my fellow classmates updated on me and my problems.  Thank you to my classmates for the wonderful cards, emails, and flowers that have helped me to keep my spirits up.  I love all the notes.  I just don’t have the energy to respond to each individual to let them know how much I appreciate the thoughts.

Hopefully I will soon know more of when I’ll be going to Medical College of  Virginia.  I will update Jackie and impose on her to pass the word to all of you wonderful friends.  Our class is really special.

Today we had a really fun time at lunch.   We went to Applebee's and their were 17? there.  Joan (Bennett) Belcher, Janet (Buckner) George, Jo Ann (Spitler) Bostic, Jane (Monk) Monday, Bill Coles, Bull Miller, Dale Miller, Faye (Adams) & Jerry Collins, Erma (Wood) Harris, William Wray, Larry Rock, Vesta (Pauley) & Earl Grinstead, Joe Bennett and me.

Once again that Butch Buckley made his promises to be there and he didn't show up again.   Do you think he doesn't love us anymore?   Judy Bowen Romano wasn't there, but she has an excused absence since her grandson got married today.  I guess Raymond Barnett also gets an excuse because he played in a golf tournament although I don't recall him asking permission from us to play.  ha ha ha

It was really good to see everyone and it was a beautiful day for a change - we've had tons of rain, rain, rain!!!  ha ha

Faye wanted me to share with all of you that she did something the other day that she had never done before....we thought she had gone sky diving or something....nooooo she had one better than that.   She locked her car keys up which also had her house keys on it and she had to call her son to bring his keys and unlock the car and house.  Ut ohhh - now we've got to be careful about these things "at our age."   ha ha

Hope many of you get to meet up with us next month.  Try to remember that we will meet again next month for lunch.  ha ha

Love to all, Jake

Today I went in for a hemoglobin test and have held my own.  Will do again on Tuesday and get another infusion of venofer.

The medical assistant to my doctor called today.  The Medical College of VA doc wants more info – so she hoped to get through my chart this afternoon and get the info he wanted.  He will review the additional info.  It will probably be next week before we hear if they can do the procedure my doc suggested or if they may have to do something else.  Her gut feeling was it may be a  couple of weeks before anything gets done.

Needless to say, I was a little discouraged.  However I did receive some more cards from our classmates that cheered me.

Hey guys and gals:

I just received a phone call from Barbara Wolfe Harvey and she is a patient at Thomas Memorial Hospital, room 272.

She says its OK for me to post this information to all of you.  She had been sick in January with the same problem - loss of blood somewhere and they can't find any answers.   She has been doing quite well for the past few months and had a blood count of 10.8 which dropped in 2 weeks down to 6.7.   She says she has had 3 units of blood since yesterday and will probably be in the hospital for at least a week.  We wish you well Barb.

I would suggest all of you send her a get well card -  I know she would appreciate it and enjoy hearing from you.

Good Morning Jake.  We only had seven attend the luncheon but we had a great time. Bonnie kept our attention with the stories of her most recent trip to the Antarctic.    You will have to have her to write a piece on her trip, which she said was very interesting.  (I NEED TO HAVE BONNIE WRITE SEVERAL STORIES ABOUT ALL HER TRAVELS.)  It was nice to see Bonnie, Dreama and Roger since they had not been to lunch for some time.  (I HATE THAT I HAD TO MISS THE LUNCHEON AND SEEING THEM BUT WILL BE THERE IN JUNE.)  Those who attended were Dreama, Roger, Raymond ,Vesta, Earl, Bonnie and me.  Bonnie brought back a special spoon for Jackie's collection.  (NOW I LOVE TO HEAR THAT.   ALWAYS ADDING TO MY SPOON COLLECTION AND ABSOLUTELY KNOW WHO EACH ONE WAS FROM.  THANKS BONNIE!!!  FUNNY STORY WAS SOME TIME AGO, I CAME HOME TO FIND A SMALL PACKAGE BEHIND MY DOOR.  I COULDN'T IMAGINE WHO IT WAS FROM, BUT LO AND BEHOLD IT WAS FROM BONNIE WHO HAD BEEN IN WV VISITING AND HAD BROUGHT ME A SPOON.  I DIDN'T THINK OF HER AT FIRST AND CALLED A FEW PEOPLE TO SEE IF THEY HAD LEFT IT BEFORE WRITING AN EMAIL TO HER TO FIND THAT SHE INDEED HAD BEEN IN WV.)

Nitro flexes muscle at Glenville showcase
Prep baseball notebook

It was only a two-hour trip up Interstate 79, but for Nitro it must have felt like a stop at the state baseball tournament. The Wildcats sure played like it.

It was three up and three down - all by shutout - for Nitro over the weekend at the McDonald's Powerhouse Invitational at the Sue Morris Sports Complex in Glenville.

The Wildcats blanked Jefferson 7-0, Bridgeport 3-0 and Martinsburg 10-0, which sort of resembled Nitro's romp through the state tournament last season when it beat Martinsburg and Fairmont Senior by matching 10-0 scores to capture its first title.

And the kicker? The Wildcats (17-3) didn't even throw their ace, junior J.R. Bradley, this weekend.

"I don't think there's any question we're one of the top teams in the state,'' said Nitro coach Steve Pritchard, "and we're one of the title contenders. We've got four pitchers. J.R. probably has the brightest future as a pitcher, but this weekend all of them threw lights-out.''

Brett Kemerer fired a five-hitter against Jefferson, Tyler Roberts a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts against Bridgeport and Andrew Pickering a five-inning one-hitter against Martinsburg. All three of those teams are included in the top 10 of the Gazette's Class AAA state rankings. (All six teams in the weekend Powerhouse field were ranked.)

"Kemerer has been our most consistent pitcher,'' Pritchard said. "Roberts shut down a really good Bridgeport team, and Pickering really had good stuff [Saturday].''

Because Kanawha County schools took spring break early this year, Nitro couldn't make its traditional trip to Myrtle Beach to play good competition and help the players bond. Pritchard thinks the trip to Glenville may have done the trick.

1 - I ASKED BARBARA WEBB PRITT IF I COULD POST THAT SHE DID INDEED CLOSE THEIR SUITES IN FL.

This from Barb:  I definately remember Larry & Sherry's visit.  I didn't have the "Suites" at that time as we closed them down December 31, 2008.  We were sad to close them because we met so many great people and had so many wonderful regular guests.  I had not been able to get up the stairs for the past two years, so I didn't feel hands on enough to keep them going.

I HAD SAID THE FOLLOWING LATER IN THE EMAIL:

Hey People:

Attached is a video that was made by Barbara Pritt's 12 year old granddaughter, Cassie, who made it with her new laptop which Barb gave her for her birthday.  This little gal is beautiful, smart & talented and has great manners - she even thanked grandma for the gift!!!  ha ha     I love her personality too.

As Cassie says you might have to turn up your sound since she was talking very low.  Enjoy, Jake

5 - We have had a lot of email address changes lately.  I'm going to send you the whole email address list which I haven't done for some time and you can check my list against your list.   This way you will have the latest email addresses for our classmates.

Please let me know if you see any addresses that need changes.   Thanks, Jake

6 - AND FINALLY.....IF THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE - LET ME KNOW AND I'LL TRY TO MAKE IT EASIER TO UNDERSTAND.   THANKS, JAKE

Hi Jackie!

Thanks for the photo...it is so cute.  Her little dog looks like Joan, Gus and my little dog..."Gizmo."  He thinks he owns Joan and Gus too, and he does!

Anyway, Larry, me and our neighbor, Alice Eary who lived across the hall from us and owned Gizmo (she died in 2001- I think) were at Mt. Dora in 2000 and visited Cathy Campbell Beach (who used to live next door in the apartment my youngest son lives in now.  she is Barbara's cousin)   (NOTE:  Larry and Sherry became the owners of Gismo when Alice died.)

We visited the darling little shop and saw Barbara and her husband at that time.  It is a small world, for sure!  Mt. Dora is a lovely little "quaint" town, with "little hills"...not like the "flat" Florida you think of, but guess you know that since you've been there too.  Alice stayed with Cathy and Larry & I stayed in a motel nearby...didn't know Barbara and her husband owned "suites" there...but maybe they didn't at that time????

Thank you for the "recall of a good memory" for me today.

Sherry

Oh my what a cute picture.....cute gal, cute dog and cute car!!!   She's parked in front of her shop named Country Cottage Crafts and it's located in Mount Dora, FL.  She and Wayne also own Country Cottage Suites.

Be sure to stop by and visit Barb if you are in the area - great place to visit.   I know several from our class and other SCHS classes who have visited them:  me, Laura Jo (Counts) & Bob Carte, my sister and brother-in-law, Dotty (Frizzell) ('48) & Don Deardorff ('49) and many others.  Dotty & Don lived in Perico Bay Club in FL so they went to Mt. Dora most years for their Anniversary.  They were telling me about this great place they loved and the quaint shop that was there and they'd take me to visit when I came down to FL.  Small world.

Let us know your story if you've been able to visit Barbara & Wayne.

Jackie:  (Joan wrote the lunch report this month since I couldn't attend - nice job.  Maybe she'd like to do this each month????  ha ha   Thanks Joan !- Love ya, Jake )

Lunch was very special with our wonderful classmate, Helen Rollins Warren and her sister, Barbara Rollins Jones, visiting.  I ask Barbara if she graduated with my brother, George (1953) and she said yes.  It was nice to meet Barbara and we enjoyed Helen reminiscing about her South Charleston days and how she had forgotten where everything was.  She was glad her sister was with her because she said she would have never found the Club.  (note from Jake:  I noticed in our 2003 Alumni Directory that Barbara is Dr. Barbara Jones who is Assistant State Superintendent of WV Department of Education.)

I ask Barbara and Helen if they remembered Larry Combs and, of course, they did.  Helen was in the Band with Larry and recalled some of the special times they had on the band trips and, of course, Throcky was always in the conversation.  I took my three CD's that I had ordered that Larry had recorded so they could see them and told them how wonderful Larry was at the concert that we had attended.

The Club was serving a buffet lunch since there were so many people attending several functions that day and after two hours we finally left the Club around 1:00.  (An added note by Jake was  it was Phyllis Rumbaugh Fenwick's parents (Ed & Ruby Rumbaugh) 70 th Anniversary and they were having a Surprise Party for them at 6 PM.  Congratulations to the Rumbaughs!  If you'd like to send them a late card let us know and we will supply you with their home address.)

Those who attended were:  Joe Bennett, Dale Miller, Jane Monday, Helen Rollins Warren, Barbara Rollins, Raymond Barnett, Carl & Carolyn Lloyd Ward and Joan Belcher.  Bull came but could not find a parking place and left.  Gus told me there was more parking on the other side of the swimming pool, but I'm not sure everyone knows it.   (note from Jake:   sure glad we have that information for future use - tell Gus thank you from all of us!!!)  The Club was having a golf outing of about forty people and also a Little League baseball get together for all the leagues in Kanawha County.

Love, Joan

PS   Don't forget to click on the attached pictures Joan took at lunch.  I'm sure happy everyone had a good time and sorry I missed it.   Plan now for next month's lunch on May 16th!  Jake

The South Charleston Museum foundation  is conducting a fund raising campaign   our goal is to preserve history, collect artifacts, educate the public and keep our history alive.  The History book that we all worked on is a great resource for our research as we have three displays that will be accomplished in the next three years.

The first a display of the Belgian glassworker's that is being built by Stan Bumgardner who is doing all the cultural center displays.  It will be complete with an audio presentation; the second will be the influence of the chemical industry on the Kanawha Valley and the third the founding businesses of our area ( this is where our history book is so valuable.)

If any of our classmates would like to contribute any amount it will be very much appreciated.  I am presently volunteering 3-4 hours per day for the museum as I love history..maybe that is because I feel a part of it..being a senior citizen.

Contributions may be mailed to The South Charleston Museum foundation,

ASHLEY WROTE THIS ON JULY 21, 2008 (SO YOU SEE HOW LATE I AM GETTING THIS POSTED.)

Good afternoon, Joan.

I have been away from South Charleston for so many years.  After my Mother passed away and we sold her house, there was nothing to really bring me back save some wonderful childhood memories.  I have no problem with your story about me. My wife says I don't have an ego problem, just too much.  All artists thrive on publicity and appreciate any that is forthcoming from whatever the source.  I am sending a bio in a separate email that should get you started.  If you have any questions, please write.  I assume you saw some of my paintings on the website.  Those can be used for any promotional purpose and if you have any need of additional pictures, just ask.  I respond to email nearly every day except when on the road.  Again, good to hear from you and look forward to seeing the piece.

Thanks,
Ashley

JASHLEYKIRBY.COM

My first oil painting was on a piece of cardboard.  My father was a traveling salesman and left his paints where I could get my hands on them.  Today, I still paint on paper.  Most of my life I had quiet ambitions to be a full time artist but circumstances always seemed to keep art an avocation.

I studies art in Germany for over two years with Heinrich Kreutzfeldt, a well-known artist from Bad Kreutznach.  I taught children’s art classes, photography classes, and designed and built sets for a theater group at the Air Base in Sembach , Germany .

I moved to France for a year, then in Athens , Greece before moving to Teheran , Iran for another year.  Life imitates life; I had become a “traveling salesman” with a territory stretching from Morocco to India .  The six day Arab-Israeli War of 1967 forced my eventual return to the states to work in downtown Manhattan .  Circumstances still kept fine art an avocation.

After a number of years as a designer and builder in Florida , I moved to Greenville , SC and again found some of my father’s brushes in my hand.  All of his art “stuff” was passed on to me.

I went to a watercolor class at Furman University, took workshops with several professionals including Carl Blair, Jeanette Dreskin and Mary White and my art found a new beginning.

Circumstances have changed.  Art is now my full time profession.  For the last 6 years, I have been teaching classes three days a week in my studios, occasional classes at Furman and participate in 16 to 18 juried Art Fairs throughout the Southeast every year.

Jay's opening paragraph in his blog says the following....

Why a blog for us at this age you ask? Well, a couple of reasons --- 1, we can, and B, it's a way of keeping our scattered family informed on what we are up to. For those of you who are students of the English language, it should be "... informed to what we are up."

Three years or so ago, we became snowbirds, and thus see our friends only half the year. We are mostly homebodies in the north for the summers and hippie art students in the south for the winters. This blog, therefore, will help the kids to understand how we are spending their inheritance. I hope members of the extended family and friends will find something of interest as well.   Jay

March 24, 2009

Hey there gang:

We had our luncheon on Saturday and had a great time.   Those who attended were:  me, Joan, Phyllis, Judy, Leo, Mona, Joe, Vesta, Earl, Bull, Butch, Raymond, Faye, Jerry and William Smith.   Poor Jane Monday planned to come but was sick with such a cough and Erma was out of town.  Don't know what happened to our other regulars?

Of course, we had planned the 70th surprise party for those twins (Bull & Dale).  Wouldn't you know that Dale went back to sleep and didn't wake up until lunch was over - or that's what Bull told us.  Bull was so late arriving that we thought he wasn't coming.  Oh well, best laid plans....when he did get there he cut his cake and was very pleased that we had gotten it for him along with napkins and cards.   Bull took Dale's part of the cake and other things so Dale could stop by and get them.

We had fun in spite of the little delay and it was so good to see everyone!!!  We still wonder if someone didn't let the cat out of the bag and tell them. Seemed mighty suspicious that they'd both had problems when they are usually the first to get there.  : - )

Plan to come to the lunch next month on Saturday, April 18th.   I won't be able to join you because it's the annual Charleston-Huntington Calligraphers Exchange Meeting.  Have a great time and don't talk about me too much.  ha ha   I WILL be sending out the regular reminders and making the calls so be ready to give me a count.

Love to all, Jake

After years waiting, Yuengling fans can buy favorite in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginians no longer will have to cross state lines to buy a six-pack of Yuengling beer.

Next month, the company will be making the popular Pennsylvania beer available for sale throughout the Mountain State, company officials said Monday.

Yuengling could start showing up in retail stores and bars late next week, but most likely some time in April. The Pottsville, Pa.-based brewery was completing contracts with distributors and the state Alcohol Beverage Control Administration this week.

"The people of West Virginia have been very patient, and we're very thankful for that," said Yuengling Chief Operating Officer David Casinelli. "It's going to be one of our best openings ever. We're very excited."

Yuengling, the nation's oldest brewery, sells beer in 12 states and Washington, D.C. The company last expanded sales in Georgia in October.

Anheuser-Busch wholesalers will distribute Yuengling - pronounced "ying-ling" - in West Virginia, Casinelli said.

"Our goal was to have our products out there to take advantage of the summer selling season," he said. "So far, everyone has been cooperative and willing to work with us."

For years, West Virginia beer aficionados have traveled to stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia to purchase Yuengling. The beer is especially popular in the Northern Panhandle and Morgantown area, which includes Pennsylvania residents who attend West Virginia University.

The company has waited until now to move into the West Virginia market, Casinelli said, to make sure there was a sufficient customer demand and adequate distribution network statewide.

"We have a lot of loyal consumers who have gone through crazy hoops to get their Yuengling," Casinelli said. "We're still very much a regional brand."

Yuengling expects its flagship brand, Yuengling Lager, to become its best seller in West Virginia, as it is in other states.

Depending on demand, the brewer also will make available its other beers: Premium, Light Lager, Premium Light, Original Black & Tan, Porter and Lord Chesterfield Ale.

Established in 1828, Yuengling now produces 1.2 million barrels of beer a year, making it the sixth-largest commercial brewer in the U.S. In addition to its Pottsville plant, Yuengling has a brewery in Tampa, Fla.

Casinelli said recent West Virginia legislation to raise the maximum permissible alcohol level for beer sold in the state had nothing to do with the company's decision to start selling in West Virginia.

The bill would raise the legal alcohol limit for beer from 6 percent to 12 percent.

All Yuengling beers have lower than 6 percent alcohol content, with Lord Chesterfield Ale the highest at 5.4 percent.

"We don't have any of that high-octane stuff," Casinelli said.

He said the economic downturn hasn't hurt Yuengling's sales, which increased 7 percent last year.

"I don't think anything's recession-proof," he said. "But we've held up pretty well."

    For Immediate Release

Mount Dora featured in book, The Great Towns of America

MOUNT DORA – The Great Towns of America, a 624-page book by David and Joan Vokac published and released in January 2009, features a full chapter highlighting Mount Dora. The book is a detailed vacation and relocation guide to the nation’s top 100 destinations, according to the authors.

“Mount Dora is the prettiest inland village of Florida,” Vokac writes in the book. “Palms and towering moss-draped hardwoods shade waterfront parks and line streets where tidy, whitewashed homes surrounded by manicured gardens are reminiscent of Victorian New England. The flowery little business district fills historic and contemporary buildings with distinctive specialty and antique shops, galleries, restaurants and quaint inns,” Vokac writes.

Chapters detailing each of the top 100 American towns from Bar Harbor, Maine to Palm Desert, California and everything in between, feature descriptions of the towns, their restaurants, attractions, lodging options and provide unique weather and livability ratings. The authors traveled to each destination and reviewed all their key points of interest and attractions, focusing on smaller cities (with populations less than 80,000) located in spectacular settings – on mountains, lakes, oceans or on varied terrain. Additional criteria includes that the cities offer manmade attractions, restaurants and lodgings that enhance their charm and usability in a way appealing to the traveling public.

Mount Dora has earned many accolades over the years such as “Best antique shopping in the South,” by Southern Living Magazine, “Friendliest small town in Florida,” by Florida Monthly Magazine, and “One of the best places in the country to retire,” by Money Magazine. Also, according to authors Pamela Acheson and Richard Meyer, Mount Dora is “One of the best romantic escapes in Florida.”

Other Florida cities featured in The Great Towns of America include Key West, Naples, St. Augustine and Vero Beach.

The book currently sells for $23.95 and is available at most book stores or online, www.amazon.com.

    February 21, 2009

Wonderful, wonderful time on Saturday!!!  Sure wish all of you could have been with us.

Those who made it:  Joan Belcher, William Smith, Jane Monday, Phyllis Fenwick, Jo Anne Bostic, Bull Miller, Joe Bennett, Dale Miller, Vesta & Earl Grinstead, Judy Romano, Faye & Jerry Collins, Carolyn & Carl Ward and me.

In addition to these classmates, Bud Williams and his grandson where there to have lunch and from the class of 1957 - David & Dee Dee Kirkhart and Dee Dee's sister, Judy Wilson ('61) and many relatives of theirs who were in visiting from FL.  Nice to have the opportunity to visit with these folks too.

Jane had on her gold nugget that she won at the reunion.  It looked so pretty on her..Joan took her picture and hopeful will have it on our website soon - so check it out.

William Smith tells me that he retired for a few years, but couldn't take it anymore so he is working again.  He's clearing land for a doctor to build on.  Good for you William - no need to just sit around and get old.  Keep that brain and body working.  Actually,
I have information that I'm to post to everyone about his other job - he makes furniture and it's beautiful....I do mean big furniture, cabinets, chest, beds, etc.

Honest, I will get caught up on my posted ASAP as I can.   We will be going tomorrow night (so we can make early appointment Tuesday AM) to OSU Medical Center to a doctor who specializes in CIDP.   I'm praying he will be able to give us some answers about Jerry.  Anyway, will get back to the posting business when I get home and settled.   We have no idea how long we will be there - maybe up and back in a day or maybe longer.

Coach Surette has written a book titled "Conquering Education's Challenges" and those who have had time to read it say it is a very good book.   Carl Ward is selling the books for Coach and will take orders from those who would like to buy one or more.

Contact Carl at his phone number rather than by email.   His number will be in our booklets from the reunion with wife Carolyn Lloyd Ward's information or you can call me.   I don't want to post it online.

By the way, Carolyn was sporting a handbag that she made - it truly was beautiful - we told Carolyn we want one too.   ha ha  What do you think?   Will she make us one?  Tune in later for the answer.

Well now, that's about all the information I can think of this evening, but if I remember anything else I will write again.

    Love to all, Jake

    January 19, 2009

    Hey there guys and gals:

We sure missed those of you who couldn't make it today.   We had another fun packed day with lots of visiting.  Those who braved the very cold weather were:  Joan, Leo & Mona, Jo Ann, Bull and girl friend Terry, Dale, Joe, Vesta & Earl, Raymond, William Smith and me.

In the midst of our conversations we learned that Vesta's husband, Earl, will be having heart catherization on Monday.  Also, find that Bull will be driving Terry back home to MD - she has been visiting for a month or so.   Bull's brother, Archie and his wife, Freda, will ride with them so Bull doesn't have to drive home alone.   Now that's nice.

I heard from Erma who had family in for a visit so she couldn't make it, Judy is working at Sam's (she says dishing out food) - that girl just stays too busy, Jane Monday wasn't sure she'd be able to get off the mountain where she lives, Janet was unsure what the day was going to bring and Faye & Jerry had planned to be there - maybe it was just too cold for Jerry to venture out since he's had so much trouble with his lungs.   We hope and pray all is well with everyone and hope to see them next month (along with others who didn't get to come.)   Maybe it will be a little warmer for everyone!

Raymond and wife, Liz, will leave for FL soon and they usually stay around a month.   Lucky people - going down there where it's nice and warm.

Think about joining us next month when we meet again for lunch which will be exactly one week after Valentine's Day.  Hmmmm, we missed it by that much..........or we could have had candy, flowers, diamonds and such.   ha ha

We'll be looking for you next month, until them keep a smile on your face when you think of us and the rest of the class of '58.

    Love to all, Jake

I have attached a picture of Leo & Mona (Turner) Mallory's new great-granddaughter whose name is Zailee Roberts.  This adorable little gal is 19 months old.  Her grandparents are:  Tami (79) & Patrick Roberts.  Her parents are Josh & Tracy Roberts.

I'm still having trouble thinking of anyone in our class being old enough to have great-grandchildren.  Are we sure Leo and Mona really graduated with us???  ha ha

Mona & Leo, thanks for sharing.

    Love to all, Jake
